You must be psycic. How did you know it was to snow here tonight? First of all it was Jesus himself who said He would be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth and Jesus knew how many hours were in a day

JOHN 11 [9] Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.[10] But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

Theres another huge problem with your theory. There is no portion of the 3rd day

JOHN 20 [1] The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when IT WAS YET DARK, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

Youve known all along that you cannot find a portion of a third night. In believing the above scripture you must now believe you cannot find a portion of a third day. When Mary Magdalene came to the place Jesus was buried it was still dark and He had already risen.
Sorry about the name typo. I apologize in advance as I don’t follow your reply:
  1. Jesus said 3 days and 3 nights - what’s the point - Jesus was Jewish so my point that in Judaism any part of the day counts as day or night (an entire day) is directly on point.
  2. Why no portion of the “third” day? Jesus died on Friday and was burried before the Sabbath (so Friday is the first day); Saturday is the second day - and he arose “on” Sunday (the third day) - thus “3 days” as Jews will count them?
Again - three “days and nights” in the way this phrase would be understood to Jews of that time.

See Matt 9:31 ***(for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” ) ***and

Matt 10:34 (and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.")

In these verses - Jesus describes rising after three days (not three days and three nights). As scripture cant’ contravene itself, these must mean the same thing? How? As I have explained - any portion of a day counts as a full day (day and night) - at least as Jews thought about such (and do still today, in fact).

Blessings,

Brian

Before I forget, I wanted to point out that the Scriptures indicate that the Jewish sabbath, patterned after God’s rest on the seventh day of creation, was instituted as a weekly remembrance of their liberation from Egyptian slavery on the seventh day of their week. (Deuteromomy 5:15) This event was arguably the most important in the history of the Jewish people but it was only a figure that pointed to the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead on the first day of the week, arguably the most important event in all of human history. Christians have rightly suppressed the celebration of the figure (the Jewish sabbath celebrated on the seventh day of the week) in favor of the celebration of that to which the figure pointed, the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead on the first day of the week.

Hebrews 3:11-15:

***3:11
As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’"
3:12
Take care, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.
3:13
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
3:14
For we share in Christ, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end,
3:15
while it is said, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
3:16
Who were they that heard and yet were rebellious? Was it not all those who left Egypt under the leadership of Moses?
3:17
And with whom was he provoked forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
3:18
And to whom did he swear that they should never enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
3:19
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. ***

These verses tell us that our rest is fulfilled in Christ.
Seems ya sure do lose a lot of truths once you leave the KJV for a different bible

HEBREWS 3 [12]Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. [13] But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; [15] While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. [16] For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came OUT OF EGYPT by Moses. [17] But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, WHOSE CARCASES FELL IN THE WILDERNESS? [18] And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? [19] So we see that THEY COULD NOT ENTER IN BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF.

(out of Egypt - into the wilderness –destoyed them that believe not)

So, how do you deny God and Jesus according to this new testament scripture, and walk in the spirit of unbelief. Who are these people and why were they killed in the wilderness? The answer would be very important, as this passage from the NEW TESTAMENT tells us NOT to do as they did and walk with an evil heart of unbelief.

EZEK.20 [10] Wherefore I caused them to go forth OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, and brought them INTO THE WILDERNESS. [11] And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.[12] Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.[13] But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness: they walked not in my statutes, and they despised my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; and MY SABBATHS THEY GREATLY POLLUTED: then I said, I would pour out my fury upon them IN THE WILDERNESS, TO CONSUME THEM.

(out of Egypt - into the wilderness - polluted HIS SABBATHS - destroyed them)

When we go back to the old testament to see exactly what the new testament is talkin about we find that Hebrews 3 is speaking of those who did not keep the sabbath and how the Lord was to destroy them in the wilderness because of unbelief. So the scripture in Hebrews 3 is telling us, as believers we must keep the sabbath, and not to walk with an evil heart of unbelief. Should we follow the scriptures? Will following the doctrines of churchiology get us to the kingdom? My money is on the scriptures.

DEUT.5[15] And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

(remember - out of Egypt - Keep the Sabbath)

HEBREWS 4 [1] Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.[2] FOR UNTO US WAS THE GOSPEL PREACHED, AS WELL AS UNTO THEM: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.[3] For WE WHICH HAVE BELIEVED DO ENTER INTO REST,

There ya have it. The same gospel preach to us as to them. Those who believe that gospel keep Gods sabbath day. Those with the spirit of unbelief do not.

Now lets look at Hebrews 4

HEBREWS 4

[1] Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.[2] For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.[3] FOR WE WHICH HAVE BELIEVED DO ENTER INTO REST, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Don’t come up short. Have faith in the WORD. Enter into Gods rest. His sabbath day.

[4] For he spake in a certain place of THE SEVENTH DAY on this wise, And GOD DID REST THE SEVENTH DAY from all his works.[5] And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Yup, the 7th day. That’s Gods sabbath day alright.

[6] Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:[7] Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Some, to whom it was first preached had the spirit of unbelief and did not enter the sabbath rest (Ezek.20). They were destroyed. Do you hear his voice today? Right now. Don’t harden your heart as they did.

[8] For IF JESUS HAD GIVEN THEM REST, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.[9] THERE REMAINETH THEREFORE A REST to the people of God.

You’ve heard the many say “Jesus is my rest”. Well…verse 8 contradicts that? Anyways the rest (sabbath) remains. Ive heard “the many” say verse 9 is speaking of the 1000 yr period of rest. That rest has not yet arrived, so how could it remain? Oh well. Another thing that bothers me is the fact that many of the new translations have changed the name of Jesus to Joshua. Why? What are they trying to hide?

[10] For HE THAT IS ENTERED INTO HIS REST, he also hath ceased from his own works, AS GOD DID FROM HIS.
[11] Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Of course the above verses are speaking of the sabbath. Enter into the rest as God also did. Verse 4 says God entered into rest on the seventh day. The sabbath. Verse 11 says we are to enter into that very same rest.

Ive seen pages and pages written about above scriptures trying to explain that it doesnt really mean what it says. Just believe what it says and enter into the rest GOD created for us. The rest that sanctifys us and sets believers apart from those with the spirit of unbelief, like those who were destroyed in the wilderness (Ezek.20). Don’t harden your heart.

The vast majority of those who do as you do and “let Scripture interpret Scripture” worship on Sunday. They have clearly received a different understanding from reading the very same words that you read.

Why are they incorrect? From whence do you derive your authority for proclaiming the rightness of what you see when reading the Bible? What makes your discernment greater and more authoritative?

Hi Alindawyl
I wish i could answer your question. Why do you believe as you believe. And do you believe your beliefs are dicerned believable. Ofcourse you do or ya wouldnt believe them. Its not only the sabbath that i disagree with them on. I believe ghandi has a chance for eternal life. All catholics, all protestant, the american indians before we even got here. At the great white throne judgement everyone except those who made it to the 1000yr period of rest will be judge by the portion of the 10 commandments that deal with man. If good to your fellow man, eternal life. If bad to your fellow man, you get the what for. All this can be backed up by scripture.

PS
It kinda maddens me that some people think God would create a peoples that had no chance of hearing about Christ and then send them to hell for not believing in Christ. The God i believe in is a loving, kind God

The Church teaches invincible ignorance, that those who have never heard of the faith have a reduced culpability in their sins and still have the possibility for salvation. It may be harder for them, but it IS possible.

I submit myself to the will of God and the authority of the Church that was established by Jesus Christ. My certainty does not exist because I believe in my own ability to read Scripture and fully understand it. On the contrary, I do not believe so strongly in myself.

I look to the Church which Jesus Christ himself established, which has that authority by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Any time I think Scripture conflicts or doesn’t make sense, I always know that I can rely on the teaching authority of the Church to provide the truth of the matter.

Many times I’ve wished various disciplines or even doctrines were different. I was raised in the Church and haven’t always agreed with what she expect of us. Even now that’s true. But once I made the conscious decision to submit my will to that of Jesus and his Church despite my disagreements, I’ve been more at peace than you can possibly imagine.

My uncertainty remains, but it is greatly diminished and is no longer the millstone around my neck that it once was. I hope that in time it all goes away for me, and for others as well.

If the Church says that we don’t need to observe the sabbath and Mass shall take place on Sunday, then that’s good enough for me. The Magisterium is filled with theologians and Biblical scholars who are far greater than I at such things, and they’ve got the Holy Spirit on their side.

Hi Alindawyl
But dont you feel you have the Holy Spirit on your side to?

1 John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Dont you think that the anointing which is being spoken off in scripture above is the anointing of the Holy Spirit?

I have the Holy Spirit on my side when I receive instruction based on the Magisterium of the Church, as they are guided by the Holy Spirit to ensure that revealed truth is always taught correctly. I do not necessarily have the Holy Spirit on my side when I base that instruction on my own reading of Scripture in isolation from the Church. Down that path one may find heresy and schism.

That’s the problem with pulling out an isolated verse and trying to make it say what you want, rather than going into things understanding the context of the entire book with no preconceived notions about what it may or may not be saying. 1 John was written to combat false teachings about the faith and Jesus in particular, specifically his divinity, and to exhort the faithful to deepen their relationship with Christ. Everything about it should be read in that context.

I have gone to many boards over the last 20 years. Before this, they were all (as my wonderful catholic nephew calls them) protester boards. Ive noticed 1 thing. I have been accepted here with a gentileness of heart. Something i did not find on previuos boards. This is the 1st catholic board i have visited. Because our beliefs differed so much, i was hesitant in coming here. Im glad i decided to come here and im honored to to get to know you guys. May you all have a wonderful new year ahead of you.

MATTHEW 15 [24] But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the LOST SHEEP of the house of Israel.

That’s what Jesus said. He was not sent but unto…

JOHN 10 [14] I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. [15] As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. [16] And OTHER SHEEP I HAVE, WHICH ARE NOT OF THIS FOLD: THEM ALSO I MUST BRING, and THEY SHALL HEAR MY VOICE; and there shall be ONE FOLD, and ONE SHEPHERD.

Jesus also said there were “others” not of the fold of the house of Israel. Everyone seems to agree that these “others” are the gentiles. The gentiles who hear His voice?

ISAIAH 56 [1] Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for MY SALVATION IS NEAR to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. [2] Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. [3] Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the Lord, speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. [4] For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; [5] Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. [6] Also THE SONS OF THE STRANGER, that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one THAT KEEPETH THE SABBATH from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; [7] EVEN THEM WILL I BRING TO MY HOLY MOUNTAIN, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. [8] The Lord God which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, YET WILL I GATHER OTHERS TO HIM, beside those that are gathered unto him.

Jesus BRINGS THEM to His Holy Mountain. The 1000 yr period of rest. So, have “many” come in the name of Jesus and decieved many as the bible said would happen? I reckon so. You must be keeping the sabbath in order to be saved to the kingdom. According to scripture that is so.

ISAIAH 66 [20] And they shall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the Lord out of all nations upon horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon swift beasts, to MY HOLY MOUNTAIN Jerusalem, saith the Lord, as the children of Israel bring an offering in a clean vessel into the house of the Lord. [21] And I will also take of them for priests and for Levites, saith the Lord. [22] For as the NEW HEAVENS AND THE NEW EARTH, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. [23] And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and FROM ONE SABBATH TO ANOTHER, SHALL ALL FLESH COME TO WORSHIP BEFORE ME, saith the Lord. [24] And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Seems that when we reach the kingdom we will be keeping Gods sabbath day. Question is….Is Jesus the same yesterday, today and forever or is God a wishy washy God. You will keep my sabbath for 4 thousand years, the next 2 thousand years don’t bother, after that you will keep my sabbaths forever.

Hi iWrecknSow:

I don’t think these verses mean that the Sabbath will continue as sabbath of observance - rather, its Isaiah speaking in language that the Jews of his day would understand that effectively the sabbath will be every day (day to day, moon, to moon, sabbath to sabbath (i.e., week to week). This is exactly, in fact, what Hebrews is telling us (earlier in the thread) that our rest in God after Christ is “now” - “today” - “every day” in Christ, rather than on the Sabbath day of rest.

Jesus is in fact the same yesterday, today and forever (also from Hebrews), but God has always intended (since the beginning ) that there would be a "new covenant’ and in fact it would expressly be different than the mosaic covenant (see Jer 31:31-34). This doesn’t mean God has changed, but is unfolding his plan from the foundation of the world.

If you want to see other Old Testament examples of “change” (again not really change - change from our perpsective but always part of God’s plan), just look at the dietary laws. In God’s law we started as vegetarians, then were given all animals and plants for our food; then restricted (at least Jews were) to clean animals and vegetibles; and then with the New Covenant, once again - all is clean in God’s eyes.

Blessings,

Brian

I thank you all for your answers but there were no scriptures that you guys sent that actually said the day of rest was to be changed to sunday.

**No Scriptures are needed - the Resurrection of Christ is far more important than the directions given to the Jews; we are not bound by those directions, because we belong to the Risen Lord Who is greater than any book. Christ is our Sabbath. **

I heard (history channel) that it wasnt changed till Constantine in the 3rd century after he said he saw a cross in the sky and he said God told him to go to war under this sign. While even after, he practiced the following of baal. Is this true?
##** No, it is not true. That last sentence in particular is rubbish, spread by pig-ignorant fanatics who have not a clue about early Church history, & wouldn’t know Baal if he mugged them in broad daylight. **

**Since Constantine’s conversion & legislation belong to the fourth century it’s hard to see how the History Channel could have put them in the third 😦 The Cross-in-the-sky story can be found in Eusebius’ life of Constantine. Such an event is perfectly possible, & not miraculous in the slightest. **

This is exactly, in fact, what Hebrews is telling us (earlier in the thread) that our rest in God after Christ is “now” - “today” - “every day” in Christ, rather than on the Sabbath day of rest.
2 THES. 1 [7] And to you who are troubled REST WITH US, WHEN THE LORD JESUS SHALL BE REVEALED FROM HEAVEN with his mighty angels, [8] In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Hebrews is clearly speaking of Gods sabbath day. I have asked people to explain how they rest in Christ and they really cant. Most answer in platitudes which convey nothing. It is very soft and nice to the ears to say your resting everyday with Jesus. But what does that mean? And if you come to know what that means why would anyone conclude that that means you no longer need to keep His 4th commandment? That being said the above scripture tells you when your rest with Jesus begins. Its after His 2nd coming.

ISAIAH 14 [1] For the Lord will have mercy on Jacob, and WILL YET CHOOSE ISRAEL, and set them in their own land: and THE STRANGERS shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob. [2] And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the Lord for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. [3] And it shall come to pass in the day that THE LORD SHALL GIVE THEE REST from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,

Theres those “other stangers” again. Again, the above scripture is speaking of the 1000 yr period of rest. It is at that time the Lord shall give you rest.

Hello FCGEM
Ive been reading the replies. Its just not real safe to put your trust in words that were written sometimes hundreds of years after Christ. Scriptures below are the reason i get my beliefs from the WORD rather than the words of men

MATT.24 [4] And Jesus answered and said unto them, TAKE HEED THAT NO MAN DECEIVE YOU.[5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many

So FCGEM who do you think the “many” are

1 JOHN 2 [18] Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, EVEN NOW ARE THERE MANY ANTICHRISTS; whereby we know that it is the last time. [19] They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

See, the bad guys were present even then

2 COR. 11 [13] For such are FALSE APOSTLES, deceitful workers, TRANSFORMING THEMSELVES INTO THE APOSTLES OF CHRIST. [14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [15] Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

It would seem to be very dangerous to trust your salvation to the various religious leaders or to take hold to the doctrines of these men. They might appear to be ministers of righteousness but they are not.

2 PETER 2 [1] But there were FALSE PROPHETS also among the people, even as there shall be FALSE TEACHERS among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.[2] And MANY SHALL FOLLOW their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.[3] And through covetousness shall they WITH FEIGNED WORDS MAKE MERCHANDISE OF YOU:

Well FCGEM, do ya see while im a little leary about putting my belief in the words of man?

**While on earth, what was Christ ? That’s right - a man. Not an obviously & unmistakably Divine Saviour, but just another Jew like any other. **

**You would have no NT to read while He went about on earth; no one would have. Your position rests on the existence of a written, completed, 27-book NT that is treated as Holy Scripture - in the year 30 or so, no such thing existed. So if your reasoning is valid, it makes Christ himself no more worthy of belief than anyone else. There was a Scripture - in the form of what to us is the OT; & judged by that, Jesus is anything but what Christians believe him to be. Measured by the OT, He is a deceiver, which is what His opponents thought He was. **

**The very words you quote would not exist today, but for the Church you’re criticising. Besides, the Bible is the Church’s book - just as the OT belonged to Judaism. Those who reject the Church, have no business quoting its Book: they only make a complete mess of doing so, because their mind is not that of the Church, but is opposed to it. **

The earliest writings that reflect the already-in-practice worship on the Lord’s Day are not from “hundreds of years after Christ.” In ca. A.D. 110 the St. Ignatius of Antioch (a martyr for the Faith), who with St. Polycarp was a hearer of St. John and the immediate successor of St. Peter to the bishopric of Antioch (so you’d think he’d know a thing or two about when the Christians were to worship) wrote: “If, then, those who walked in ancient customs came to a new hope, no longer sabbathing but living by the Lord’s Day, on which we came to life through Him and through His death. . .”

The Didache was written A.D. 140: “On the Lord’s Day of the Lord gather together, break bread and give thanks after confessing you transgressions so that your sacrifice may be pure.”

And around A.D. 146-155 St. Justin, Martyr wrote his First Apology: “The Day of the Sun is the day on which we all gather in a common meeting, because it is the first day, the day on which God, changing darkness and matter, created the world, and it is the day on which Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead.”

No, actually you get your beliefs from your own misunderstanding of Scripture - that is most unwise. You’re just substituting yourself for those who actually have the authority from Christ to preserve His Self-Revelation; you have made yourself to be the arbiter of the meaning of Scripture. It’s always nice and easy to submit to the authority of self.
##** And so convenient - if all authority is purely spiritual, & involves no deference to other men, one is for all practical purposes one’s own guide in these things. So much for the Church’s being a Body; it becomes a bunch of unreconciled, ****disunited ****individuals each **playing by his own rules  😦 😦 😦 The NT cannot possibly mean that to be Christ’s intention
