Going to Battle with Sugar

When I fall into a trap is with all of the driving, activities, and sudden hunger cravings. I’m NOT good at preparing for those in advance, and we end up eating out, which I’m honestly tired of doing. What types of snacks did you pack along?
I have that issue, too. I’m actually about to leave to teach faith formation and the kids are bringing along a paper plate of chicken nuggets, string cheese and strawberries. The nuggets aren’t great I know, but it still probably beats fast food! When I have more time to prepare, they love cucumber slices, Bell pepper slices, crackers and cheese slices, etc. but really I don’t beat myself up over giving them something like nuggets or a sandwich when we are running around all over town.

Oh also YOGURT! They eat that on the go a lot and so do I. I buy Oikos Greek yogurt, it has 15g of protein and no added sugars.

Cut up vegetables with hummus is very good.

Boiled eggs are also good.

Quick and handy snack on the go.

I wish I liked yogurt.

I can’t even stand the smell of it. If someone brings it for lunch at work, I usually have to leave the room because the smell, especially the Greek yogurt, makes me feel ill. Sigh.

As for the texture–eugh.

My husband likes it and I buy it for him, but he eats it when I’m not around. But if he doesn’t brush his teeth after, I can smell it on him–icky! Just thinking about it now makes my stomach turn over!

But I wish I liked it because it’s such an easy snack or easy light meal. Oh, well.

I love Peeps, and many people can’t stand them! I like anything marshmallow, including marshmallows!

Yes! It’s one of my favorite lunches! Cottage cheese with some cut up fruit! Yum!

If you are on Facebook, you might join groups that support those trying to give up sugar. Search for sugar addiction or sugar detox. Lots of good info!

I am living on two meals a day too.

My bloating and inflammation are gone and I sleep a lot better.
May I suggest to all:

—Intermittent fasting AND Keto diet (mostly low carbs/low sugar and higher fat) with proper nutrients (vegetables, fish and vitamins)

It would solve most of the issues that have been raised on this thread. It deals well with: lowering blood sugar, hypertension, bloating and intestinal issues, indigestion and abdominal pains, liver and kidney problems, mental clarity, losing weight, better sleep, etc…

No soda or juices. Get in the habit of drinking water.
This was so hard for me at first. The only way I was able to up my water intake while cutting back on other beverages was to tell myself that BEFORE I could have that 12 oz. can of soda or 20 oz. bottle of juice, I had to drink the equivalent amount of water. THEN I could have the other beverage. As a result, I usually quenched my thirst before I got around to drinking the other stuff. And the difference in a restaurant bill by drinking water instead of ordering a beverage also made a great incentive!

I fast mainly for spiritual purposes but I am seriously thinking of continuing the fast after Lent is over.

Can’t do Keto. Not sustainable for me.

I don’t eat bread, pasta but I like brown rice and oats, both of which are forbidden in the Keto diet.

No longer drink soda.

Ice water with a squeeze of lemon 🍋 is now my drink of choice.

Why very little credibility?
Because he’s a fear mongerer all about selling books.
His science is sound.
No, it’s not…see above.
Besides consuming sugar in such high amounts is bad for you. This is what he says.
Why? It’s an essential macro nutrient. Would you say the same for fats or protein?
You seem to be…I don’t know what, with this subject.
I don’t either i guess. I like to think well read and well informed.
Have you not ever watched My 600lb life?
No, but I don’t think that matters. It’s a show looking for a specific outcome.
To me you are sounding like someone who thinks alcoholism isn’t a disease.
I 110% believe alcoholism is a disease. I’ll push back, by that logic, your’re saying an alcoholic can cure their disease by switching from vodka to beer (like switching from sweets to fruit, both have high amounts of sugar) because the delivery system is different.
It is the type of sugar in sweets and refined sugar that is different from the carbs sugars.
Actually, they aren’t. Sugar is sugar is sugar… Once broken down, the body doesn’t care.
sugar detox.
How does one “detox” from an essential macro?

Fasting is a great way to cut a sugar consumption issue imho.

OP as you cut out sugar through diet your gut bacteria flora can start to change, and many people report losing the cravings. Worked for me anyway.

I hear the opposite.

Carbohydrates are not essential.

The body can obtain the glucose it needs from a process called gluconeogenesis. It converts body fat into glucose.

The reason why vegetables and fruits are recommended is because of the micronutrients they possess.

Then I needed surgery for another ailment and I put some of the weight back on.
I’m surprised you would put back on some of the weight from eating hospital foods after surgery. Some of that food is so distasteful, one can hardly eat it. Not to mention, if you have abdominal surgery, the inability to sit up in bed and reach the tray.

When I had my hysterectomy, sitting up far enough to access the food tray was so painful that I could only eat the stuff closest to me and couldn’t even reach the rest of it (the nurses were clueless). On top of that, the concoction they called “tomato soup” looked and tasted like something that comes out of one’s mouth when one is nauseated.

How did you gain back your weight after surgery?

Not from hospital food, because I was so achy following my procedure that I was more sedentary and ate more comfort foods and started to consume more carbs. I also think that my metabolism slowed down a bit after the surgery.
