Maybe sodomy means throwing your underage daughters to the mob to be raped. That’s what God’s man wanted to do. Is Lot the good guy in this story?
Contacting your bishop? Nah. Too much work and I will never get the job done what with so many unorthodox Catholics out there.I am not claiming to know more than God, he is ominscient, I am not. In going against church teaching, one is not chosing to go against God, but rather may have been misled, or is wanting to discover God. A human can never know better than God, thus no human can claim to - its simple logic and the nature of mankind.
In going on the offensive - I have every right to, I come home from another day of condemnation about being religious at all - especially to the extent of joing CAF, the find some angry Catholics want to condemn people who don’t think just like them when it comes to church teaching. Hmmmmm. As I have said, if you do have such a huge problem about people choosing not to merely accept the faith to the point of confronting them about it, then I suggest you contact my bishop (His Grace Bishop Noble) I am not going to spend my time arguing about “being more Catholic” with you.
Of course you have to know what you’re being blind obedience to. We have a mind to reason what is good and what is not. I didnt’ want to go thru that much details. Something got to trigger a person to the faith in the first place. We all know why we’re Christians and why we’re Catholics…I hope. The Unification Church and the Church of Scientology demand blind obedience. You seem to make salvation into a matter of, well, luck depending on whom you give the blind obedience to.
You have to think about whom you’re going to obey, don’t you? That involves some analysis of authority and things like that. As soon as you do that, it’s not “blind” anymore.
I don’t think even the Church demands blind obedience. If that were so, wouldn’t the Catechism be just a list of rules? No. It has explanations and reasoning in it. It says: “This is what we believe. This is why.”
If Jesus had demanded blind obedience, what would have happened to Thomas? He saw Jesus raise people from the dead and still didn’t get the concept that Jesus himself would come again.
I may be wrong. The Church may demand blind obedience. But the mere fact that she demands it doesn’t mean she’s entitlted to it.
~ Kathy ~I’m going just to see what all the fuss is about. If all the people hadn’t started condemning it, I would have no interest.Seems like things are getting a bit testy here, and off topic. In any case, at the risk of offending someone…I’ll toss in my :twocents: .
Like "certain " books, if a movie offends you, don’t go see it. But choosing to go, doesn’t make you a "bad " Catholic. It just means you are diverse and open to learning, or may be just a bit curious.

Off topic? What do you mean?Seems like things are getting a bit testy here, and off topic.
I have learned over the years that the surest way to get someone to do something is to say " Don’t"I’m going just to see what all the fuss is about. If all the people hadn’t started condemning it, I would have no interest.
That is a feature of our fallen human nature living in a fallen world. Just ask our first parent Eve.I have learned over the years that the surest way to get someone to do something is to say " Don’t"

Let us know what you think, but for me, a tale of forbidden gay cowboy love doesn’t really spark my interests. I can’t quite figure out why. I guess I don’t really care for love stories!I’m going just to see what all the fuss is about. If all the people hadn’t started condemning it, I would have no interest.
I feel the same way. It must be all those sheep. Maybe that will be the sequel. cool:Let us know what you think, but for me, a tale of forbidden gay cowboy love doesn’t really spark my interests. I can’t quite figure out why.
Not only that, but his wife does nothing wrong but look back and gets turned into a pillar of salt! Thats extreme and I disagree with it regardless if they were told not to look back. When someone can give me a dissertation into WHY this happened and not just…“The Magesterium has spoken…you must believe” then I will believe because I UNDERSTAND it.Maybe sodomy means throwing your underage daughters to the mob to be raped. Sheep! Forget it! I’ll start counting them and fall alseep! I better pass on seeing this one.I feel the same way. It must be all those sheep. Maybe that will be the sequel. cool:
The Old Testament was written in patriarchal times.Theres much sexism in the bible.
Why not? Forbidden love is forbidden love. Just pretend it’s Romeo and Juliet. Can this even be considered a “chick flick” since it’s about two cowboys?
Catholicism is a choice not a dictatorship. We all have a journey through the church and one that leads us to God. I would never be quite so rude to condemn people who are travelling down a different path from me, but all in an attempt to find God in their lives. It’s pretty simple really. Either you’re Catholic united with the Church or not. That’s what Catholic means. Universal. One. But this is a sinful imperfect world so you always will have Catholics who want to be both, Catholic and protestant.
Perhaps this is veering too far off topic, but your questions go to the issue of authority not just interpretation. Whose interpretation is authoratative? Not only that, but his wife does nothing wrong but look back and gets turned into a pillar of salt! Thats extreme and I disagree with it regardless if they were told not to look back. When someone can give me a dissertation into WHY this happened and not just…“The Magesterium has spoken…you must believe” then I will believe because I UNDERSTAND it.
Again, doesnt anyone else see the demeaning vibe (more likely) cultural) running thru this story?
A man offers up his daughters for rape and violence…he doesnt get punished…or if he does we arent told
The woman does nothing more than look back and this angry God turns her into a giant “salt lick” for some animal.
…and Lot goes on his merry way…Ahhh the “Men” of the bible!
Theres much sexism in the bible.
I also find it wrong that none of females in Adam and Eves geneology is mentioned, but the men are. Again, cultural and sexist as far I am concerned.
Nope, I aint buying it. This is the stuff that Bible Study cringes at cause it requires thinking and questioning. Their response always…“well here we have an example of being obedient to God lest we be punished and turned into salt”…WHAT??? Unacceptable for me. This may have flew when people couoldnt explain what made lightning strike, but todays thinking person wants just a little more.
Adam and Eve brought DEATH ITSELF into the world thru Eves disobedience and God didnt smite her like he did Lots wife for just looking back!
I like the stories of the bible. So much that I want to separate MYTH and the cultural times to get at what REALLY happened and how and why God did what. I really hope theres theologians and scholars out there doing this.
Bible Study groups just wanna read passages and then the supplied notes at the bottom of the pages and think they’re onto something. At least the ones I ran into.
Ooooh I love this question.Perhaps this is veering too far off topic, but your questions go to the issue of authority not just interpretation. Whose interpretation is authoratative?
Ooooh I love this question.
Is the pope really infallible?
Is the bible really inerrant?
Whilst it may be easy for some to quickly say yes, and argue with those who dont agree, I do think those same people have to realise that we are not all blessed with blind faith and the ability to simply believe everything we are told without question. I do think that many people don’t quite seem to realise that, it is not about disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing, and it is not as simple as merely believing or changing your viewpoint in a split second.
Like Christ Himself, the Church of Christ wants man to use his intelligence to investigate her credibility. She claims to be the voice of God in the world, to speak on matters of faith and morality with the finality of God. If her claims are not true she should not receive our allegiance. If her claims are true she speaks with divine guarantee and cannot mislead…
… Now the whole matter reduces itself to this: Is the Catholic Church the Church established by Christ, and guaranteed by Him never to teach error? If so she is to be regarded with the same reverence and trust in matters of faith and morals as Christ Himself. We are free to use our intelligence to the utmost limit to ascertain if the Catholic Church is the true Church of God. Let me say in passing that if she is not, no Church is, and Christianity is false, and all revealed religion is an imposition…

You make a very good point here: Faith IS a gift from God, you can get faith no where else. Those who are gifted with the faith (and have accepted the gift) to know and accept that the Catholic Church is the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church, are truly blessed and this should leave them humbled. I would modify that it is not a “blind” faith so much as a “trusting” faith in a secure relationship with the three Persons of the Trinity.
But with the gift of faith (freely given, freely accepted), one always starts with the premise that the Church was “established by Christ, and guaranteed by Him never to teach error”. (thanks fix for your citation).I do think that many people don’t quite seem to realise that, it is not about disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing, and it is not as simple as merely believing or changing your viewpoint in a split second.
