Too bad that there are no acceptable speakers anywhere in the Catholic Church. Gonzaga is possibly more in line, morally and doctrinally, with the Anglican Church than the Catholic.

Having been raised and educated in the Deep South, and was in University during the early part of the US Civil Rights Movement, This is an outstanding choice for a commencement speaker! Not only is Bishop Tutu a major historical figure, he is/was a key figure in preventing racial revenge and chaos from resulting in the aftermath of apartheid in his country. Any other beleifs he may have or promulgate are not as extreme as those of the American Episcopl Church… which is understandable, considering he is Anglican. I am sure that all of these issues were considered by the University Authorities before he was invited to speak.
Bishop Tutu is a far less objectionable speaker than some at other Catholic Universities.

Bearing that in mind, would not Dr. Alveda King have been a prime choice?

With due respect for the King family, what has Ms. Alveda King done other than having a famous uncle? Would she have achieved her position, or fame on her own without being the niece of Martin Luther King?
She is by no means in the same league as Bishop Tutu! Bishop Tutu is the South African equivalent of the Rev. Martin Luther King–only much more important. Although Rev. King became a martyr for the civil rights movement, he still left behind an enormous amount of discontent in both blacks and whites after his death. Bishop Tutu had extraordinary skills in diplomacy and tact, and as a black man was able to convince the black population not to wreak vengance on the white population after the abolution of apartheid. He also was able to convince the white business community to stay put and not leave South Africa. He was also able by sheer dint of his personality to keep political corruption and abuse to an absolute minimum. Thus, by his efforts he was able to get justice for the black people without destroying the white segment of the population and the economy of his country. By his efforts, he made his country the only African nation that didn’t collapse when the black population got political control of their country.
Can anything Ms. King has done even compare with Bishop Tutu’s accomplishments?

Uhh…

Tutu is a typical liberal
On 20 April 2005, after Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected as Pope Benedict XVI, Tutu said he was sad that the Roman Catholic Church was unlikely to change its opposition to condoms amidst the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa: “We would have hoped for someone more open to the more recent developments in the world, the whole question of the ministry of women and a more reasonable position with regards to condoms and HIV/AIDS.
I don’t care for the man. The only thing good he did was not advocate violence.
