Sounds like the seminarian in question was about one step from being busted for plagiarism and this is all a giant deflection flounce.
I am sure you will hear stories about a final paper that I submitted for a non–credit pre–theology class. I would like to address this issue myself to prevent any misunderstandings. Before I wrote my paper, a seminarian asked that I proofread his paper. He used the Kindle version of the text and I decided to use the same version. The quotes my classmate used corresponded to the topic I wanted to write about so I used the same quotes, in the same order but used my own thoughts and words to explain the quotes. As you know, my parents have serious health issues and were hospitalized during the summer and all of us had a very chaotic year and semester, so much so that Father Andrew Lauricella, director of vocations and seminarians, informed Bishop Malone that he was concerned for our physical, emotional and spiritual health because of the hostile and chaotic environment of the seminary. I rushed to complete this paper and unfortunately, I forgot to put the opening summary in my own words. This was my fault, and I accept full responsibility for this error. I do not yet know what my penalty will or would have been.

It is troubling that Rod Dreher would post all this before confirming, or even the slightest investigation, of what is or isn’t true.
 
This Parisi guy needs to be told that it doesn’t bolster his argument when he shifts from ranting about the corruption of his formators and starts complaining about being assigned to write so many papers.
 
I have read some of Rod Dreher’s stuff, and heard him speak. He has some good ideas, when he can “think outside the box”, offer alternative information and insights we aren’t getting.

In this case, it’s straight Copy-and-paste from the secular media.
 
I forget the name of the outlet but some Buffalo News outfit had a lot of coverage on the events out there. I did not post those articles though. If one is interested, there is more reading to be found.
 
To those who have not been following the situation in Buffalo recently, this is not an isolated incident that just popped up out of nowhere. The Buffalo diocese has been embroiled in scandal for about a year now and just recently had numerous lawsuits filed against it, including a RICO lawsuit that was filed when the one-year window for filing legal claims opened up recently. This is just another in a long list of whistleblowers that used to work in the diocese that are speaking up about what they witnessed. The Congregation for Bishops in Rome is starting to take an interest in the situation in Buffalo so it is likely that this is not he last that will be heard about Bishop Malone and his diocese.

We’ve already been hearing about Bishop Malone and his alleged misdeeds for a long time, so I would hope that the Congregation for Bishops in Rome is indeed taking an interest and might perhaps consider doing something about that situation.

I am however a bit skeptical about a seminarian who isn’t claiming to be an abuse victim himself, and who seems to have personal problems, difficulties keeping up his course work, and a pending investigation into his possible academic dishonesty, jumping on the abuse scandal bandwagon, and then using it as a platform to complain about the seminary coursework. And then have Dreher present this problematic individual as a “good man” being driven out of the seminary by the corrupt atmosphere. it sounds to me like from an academic and emotional perspective, he may have been a poor fit for the seminary in the first place. Which is another problem with the seminary, if it isn’t adequately screening applicants.

I gave up on Dreher when I read his book “The Benedict Option” on being inspired by Benedictines for living life as a Christian/Catholic in the world. Any book that mentions living as a Benedictine and doesn’t even mention oblates, who spend their lives doing just that, has a serious credibility problem. But reading the book betrayed a serious misunderstanding of Benedictine spirituality, especially as it extends beyond the cloister walls.

Since reading that book, I’ve marked him up as just another ultra-conservative hack in love with the sound of his own opinions.
 
What’s happening in Buffalo? The media is heavily pro abortion, led by Warren Buffett, multi billionaire supporter of Planned Parenthood and faux “Catholic” groups, such as Catholics for Choice.

The Diocese is the only somewhat strong support for prolife, and the bishop is the de facto leader of prolife.

Thus the media hammers the diocese for every reason they can find. There is almost no coverage for sex abuse anywhere outside the Church. The diocese itself is partly to blame. The fixation on Peace and Justice, and neglect of basic doctrinal and moral teaching everywhere, including the seminary, helped set the stage for this real scandal (though the diocese isn’t worse than other agencies).

The bishop is blamed mostly for neglect by his predecessors. Faux “Catholic” groups on the Left and Right of course are trying to cash in. Church Militant, supposedly “conservative” is following the lead of the Left media. Thus case reinforces my belief that the far left and far right are essentially identical.

The current bishop isn’t perfect, but he’s far more credible than the pro abortion media, which half the Catholics are addicted to.

I think most Catholics who reviewed the Buffalo news sources would agree they slant to the Left, and oppose the Catholic Faith, the great majority of the time.

The articles in Church Militant arguably cover the same material, from the same POV, as the secular media. So my point is accurate.

As far as “the situation”:
  • Yes there has been sexual misconduct, and yes it was not handled right in recent decades;
  • The diocese was no better, and no worse, than secular agencies;
  • The vast majority of it happened before Bishop Malone. He is blamed for it.
  • The reporting by secular media (I include CM here) is blatantly misleading.

Not sure I’d label him as “ultra conservative”. He is an ex Catholic, so there may be reasons why he keeps blogging over and over to about Catholic entities, to justify his move.

He has the same anti hierarchy attitude I see in National Catholic Reporter, Call to action, LCWR, etc.

Although superficially opposite, the Far Right and Far Left seem more and more to be converging.

Like Church Militant, 1P5, not really liberal or conservative, but something else.

A priest at Mass tonight said that yesterday the two ex seminarians and another person came and disrupted the opening Mass for the seminary.

Something is seriously wrong with these people. I will pray for them.

I wonder how all the other seminarians, some of whom are likely just trying to fulfill their vocations and be good priests, feel about all this.
 
Nothing would benefit Buffalo at this time as much as prayers.

In the past year I only had one conversion with a seminarian, he was concerned because they removed a priest from teaching, who taught more doctrine than the sem wanted.

The airwaves are filled with ads by attorneys luring people. My former pastor, who died in 1977, is among those named.

There is a parish that lost about 98 percent of its membership over the past 50 years due to population shifts. The diocese wants to close this parish. The parishioners are going to the pro abortion media and politicians for advocacy, saying they shouldn’t be the victims of the sex abuse scandal. Everything is blamed on the bishop, this bishop.

This is my diocese and this story was just confirmed to an extent today by recordings of Bishop Malone.

The “cover-up” goes far, wide, and appears to be in attempt to keep these accused preists silent as they had information on other scandals in the diocese.

I know Fr. Ryszard personally and can say he has great character and was not in a romantic relationship with the seminarian ( or any man, or women). He is a devout and holy man.

Please pray for us in Buffalo, all priests and parishioners. I beleive the information that wil continue to come to light now will be very scandalous to our diocese and shake the faith of many. 😭
