To protect the health and economic well-being of current and future generations, we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using the technology, know-how, and practical solutions already at our disposal. ucsusa.org/global_warming/ (Union of concerned scientests).

Findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Includes 2,500 scientific expert reveiwers. The report finds that it is “very likely” that emissions of heat-trapping gases from human activities have caused “most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century.” “Very likely” means between 90 and 95%.

Some highlights from the report:

Rising Temperatures
• Eleven of the last 12 years rank among the 12 hottest years on record (since 1850, when sufficient worldwide temperature measurements began).
• Over the last 50 years, “cold days, cold nights, and frost have become less frequent, while hot days, hot nights, and heat waves have become more frequent.”

Increasingly Severe Weather
(storms, precipitation, drought)
• The intensity of tropical cyclones (hurricanes) in the North Atlantic has increased over the past 30 years, which correlates with increases in tropical sea surface temperatures.
• Storms with heavy precipitation have increased in frequency over most land areas. Between 1900 and 2005, long-term trends show significantly increased precipitation in eastern parts of North and South America, northern Europe, and northern and central Asia.
• Between 1900 and 2005, the Sahel (the boundary zone between the Sahara desert and more fertile regions of Africa to the south), the Mediterranean, southern Africa, and parts of southern Asia have become drier, adding stress to water resources in these regions.
• Droughts have become longer and more intense, and have affected larger areas since the 1970s, especially in the tropics and subtropics.

Melting and Thawing
• Since 1900 the Northern Hemisphere has lost seven percent of the maximum area covered by seasonally frozen ground.
• Mountain glaciers and snow cover have declined worldwide.
• Satellite data since 1978 show that the extent of Arctic sea ice during the summer has shrunk by more than 20 percent.

Rising Sea Levels
• Since 1961, the world’s oceans have been absorbing more than 80 percent of the heat added to the climate, causing ocean water to expand and contributing to rising sea levels. Between 1993 and 2003 ocean expansion was the largest contributor to sealevel rise.
• Melting glaciers and losses from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have also contributed to recent sealevel rise.

Abortion is the greatest threat to humanity! No babies born, no people. Period.

I wish global warming were true because I’m tired of being cold all the time;)

Global warming = a bunch of stats and simulations put together to try and prove a theory
Abortion = a reality

There is no question in my mind what is a greater threat to humanity. I see no proof that Global Warming has killed anybody. However, I’m sure there is some proof of Abortion in the Bio-hazard Waste bags thrown away behind PP buildings.

The Catholic Spirit: Archbishop urges U.S. senator to help stop global warming. …Global warming is a religious issue,” stated the letter to Coleman dated Nov. 20 and signed by 30 Minnesota religious leaders - Christian, Jewish and Muslim.
…“I don’t think people in our community realize the catastrophic affect of global warming,” Archbishop Flynn said. “This is a problem for all,” he said, adding that ignoring the issue is akin to sticking one’s head in the sand and hoping it will go away. catholic.org/diocese/diocese_story.php?id=22079

"Instead of believing in hearsay, check out the facts about global warming from credible sources. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s brochure on global warming (www.epa.gov/globalwarming) reports the assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (www.ipcc.ch) and recent scientific literature. London, Oct. 11, 2004 (CWNews.com) - England’s Cardinal Murphy O’Connor and the Anglican Archbishop of York, Dave Hope, are heading “Operation Noah” which aims to highlight warnings that atmospheric warming from burning carbon fuels is causing violent weather patterns and rising sea levels.

In facing climate change, what we already know requires a response; it cannot be easily dismissed. Significant levels of scientific consensus—even in a situation with less than full certainty, where the consequences of not acting are serious—justifies, indeed can obligate, our taking action intended to avert potential dangers. In other words, if enough evidence indicates that the present course of action could jeopardize humankind’s well-being, prudence dictates taking mitigating or preventative action. Sometimes I get the impression that many people use Global Warming to cover support for abortion; “Yes, I know Senator Pzatz supports forced abortion, euthanasia, and outlawing Christianity. But he also believes in Global Warming, and that’s the real danger.”

If we take no action to reduce emissions, the IPCC concludes that there will be twice as much warming over the next two decades than if we had stabilized heat-trapping gases and other climate relevant pollutants in the atmosphere at their year 2000 levels. ucsusa.org/global_warming/science/ipcc-highlights1.html
IPCC has not yet issued their report. They HAVE issued a summary, which is a political document. The actual scientific portion of the report will not be issued for some months.

It is scientifically unwarranted to issue a summary months before the actual report.

IPCC has a bad reputation because of problems in previous reports. The current summary acknowledges the problems by reducing down the harshness of the projections of the previous reports.

So, let us at LEAST wait for the full IPCC report to be released.

WHO estimated that by 2030, climate change — which many blame on greenhouse gas buildup — could cause 300,000 deaths annually. (same link).
Valke2, Post #209
48 million is the numer of abortions worldwide (yearly)
According to your own numbers Valke:

GLOBAL WARMING: 300,000 deaths per year by 2030
ABORTIONS: 48 million per year NOW

Now it’s been almost 30 years since I’ve been in school, but to the best of my recollection, 48 million is bigger number than 300,000. I would even go so far as to say it’s probably ALOT bigger. Now, let’s see, 48 million divided by 300,000 equals
160. I think that means that there are currently 160 times more **actual **deaths by abortions than are estimatedto occur 23 years from now???

Help me understand how you figure global warming causes more deaths. (Please use simple math for my simple mind.)

If you choose to speak in terms of infrastructure, you’re dodging the question. I’m using your own numbers of the PEOPLE that die/will die each year.

Facts over Stats!!! 😃 Abortion is worse than Global warming. Is global warming a risk to humans: Yes, but is it a greater threat to humanity, NO. Aborting 8% of our population annually, versus .05% of our population in 30 years.

I very much doubt that the full report will be at odds with its summary.

THe question was, which is the greater threat to humanity. 48 million abortions a year, in a world where the population has gone from3 billion to 6 billion in about 30 years, and will go from 6 billion to 9 billion in another 30, pose no threat to humanity.

You seem to be loosely applying a definition of ‘humanity’, here. Pre-born people don’t qualify as human?

Global warming isn’t nearly as much of a threat to humanity as the culture of death which allows for 48 million + abortions per year is. We’ve lost any sense of the value of the person through our contracepting and killing; I find it ironic that these scientists are lamenting a potential loss of life at some point in the future, when so many lives are being lost in the present.

Honestly, we humans are thinking too highly of ourselves if we believe that our industrial emissions can cause such large-scale climate change. We’re just not that important, and as far as nature goes, there are much bigger natural forces at work.

My bet is that it’s the sun gradually rising in temperature that’s contributing to this latest scare. Mars’s temperature is rising as well, and since obviously no people can be the cause of that climate change, the scientists are blaming it on the Sun. Seems a bit more plausible to me…

Arguments like that tend to support abortion on demand – and tend to degrade your moral authority in a discussion like this.

I haven’t read all previous 250+ posts in this thread, so maybe this had been said already.

The threat to humanity posed by abortion is not the danger of aborting ourselves to extinction. The threat is that abortion is so grossly contrary to God’s moral law (and God’s will) that we are “chastised” (to use a word from another thread) into extinction or near extinction. Like Noah, perhaps.

Rach620, You are so stupid! Have you totally forgotten about the MAN-MADE Mars Rover? Think of the dust it has kicked up into the atmosphere! Think of the pollutants from the orbiters! (Obviously, I’m kidding).

That was a fantastic link you provided, proving the fallacy of man-made global warming on Earth. I will definitely save the link! 👍

humanity as in threat to the species. I find it ironic that some people are so concered with preserving potential life and so casual to the abuses of the planet that supports all life.

If you’re worried about another Noah, I’d look to global warming as opposed to abortion for causing the next great flood.
