Greenday - American Idiot CD?

My first thoughts when reading the lyrics was that this song is not about a savior but is instead using his name as a metaphor. But it wasn’t until you posted that I did the research.

This particular Green Day album is a rock opera and deals with the alienation of suburbian youth. Here is a site that gives basic info on both this song and the album.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches in paragraph 435:

“The name of Jesus is at the heart of Christian prayer. All liturgical prayers conclude with the words “through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The *Hail Mary * reaches its high point in the words “blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” The Eastern prjayer of the heart, the Jesus Prayer, says: “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Many Christians, such as St. Joan of Arc, have died with the one word “Jesus” on their lips.”

Any use of the Holy Name of Jesus that is not in keeping with its being the “heart of Christian prayer” is no way to treat His Awesome, Wonderful Holy Name! Especially for the sake of simple entertainment!

Something may be offensive but that doesn’t make it evil. That was the basis for my response to the one of the posters. He said Greenday was evil.

But thank you for your polite response. 🙂 It is nice when disagreements don’t turn into name calling or snide remarks.

My feeling is that it’s ridiculous. Green Day’s just caving in to peer pressure with this CD.
 
It is moraly wrong to support this music. Did we ever stop and think if we did not buy the music, videios, or movies they would get the idea that we stand for something. Good music and art does not have to be offensive. We have become so desentized that we just accept it. One poster even said well I don’t know if they listen to the words. I don’t think that is entirely true they are sending a message. Is that the message you want your young imprssionable minds to hear.

It is hard as a parent to pick your battles and say no we sometimes fear our children because we will be labled as “Jesus Freaks” and that’s not cool.

I really liked Green Day, until they sold out with American Idiot. The music’s good, but they’re so emo now. Just all this damn emo, I hate it so much. I remember Dookie, that was some good music.

And no, I do not think Green Day is evil, I think you are over-reacting.

I just wish GD would go back to what it used to be. And in my opinion, there are not that many good bands out right now. I wish we could all go back to classic rock, blues, and the pre- alt rock (Like RATM and the pre- emo Green Day). And grunge, because Nirvana is great.

Hi all. Did you know that if you put a frog in a pot of cold water and place that pot on a hot burner, the frog will let you boil it to death?

Point is, if you continue to allow a little evil or bad influence in and “just accept things the way they are” the over all result is the same. DEATH. Refer to Scripture for a defenition of death. As parents, God has blessed us with the responsability to raise His children for Him. They are not ours, we happened to be blessed with a union with God in His creation. So, as responsable parents, we MUST decern for our children what is moraly, and faithfully sound for them to take part in. Make no mistake about it, WE will be held accountable by our Father for how we trained up (our) His children. Since we’re looking at lyrics, “You’ve got to stand for something, or you’ll fall for anything.”

2 of my 5 children are now teenagers and love their music. The music they listen to is ALL christian artists and I buy all of their CD’s for them. I was a metal head in high school (prior to my conversion) and know exactly what the lyrics said in all of the music I listened to. Death, suicide, some of it was pure evil in fact and I can not believe I listened to that stuff. My 15 year old actually asked me if he could listen to Linkin Park. Not all that bad, but NO WAY. You’ll find messages of premarital sex, low self esteem and more in their music. “Dad, what about Slip Knot?” I about fell out of my tree!! Needless to say, the kids are going to have friends that influence what they are doing and listening to. We have to teach our children why it is necessary to keep the garbage out of their heads. Luckily my 15 year old and I have a good relationship and were able to talk about the music he listens to and he is happy with what he has. Cuz the music ROCKS!

There are many bands with GREAT sound and lyrics out ther for all ages to listen to. 12 Stones, Kutless, Stereo Deluxe, Skillet, Falling Up, POD and the list goes on. Some of them even have great God centered messages. Please do not give in to societal pressure or the thought that it will be ok. We can not allow our children to continue to be boiled to death.

If God didn’t like Green Day, he would have smited them a long time ago.
 
As a mother to a 13 yr old son there is no way I could honestly justify spending hard-earned money on this band.

IMO, the band’s message is fairly vacant and is basically an outlet for anger. Yes, its marketed to be slick, appealing, and all together ‘cool’ for many teens but in the end does it bring people closer to or further away from Christ? My logic & sense tells me further away.

I watched a few minutes of an interview on VH1 with Green Day and found myself wishing that I had those few precious minutes of my life back. The singer was trying to explain the meaning behind one of the songs and it was basically a meaningless diatribe of catch phrases and was completely devoid of anything remotely coherent.

I know it is hard to refuse our children anything & I know the things I’ve said are ‘unpopular’ but my family’s souls are too important to compromise. Who was the wise person who said "garbage in…garbage out’?

The only song on Greenday’s American Idiot CD that I like is “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”

The CD is not appropriate for a 13 year old, IMO.

Hawk Nelson is my favorite band! I saw them in concert last spring, they were awesome. :cool: Their “Letters to the President” album is really good.

Switchfoot is also one of my favorite bands, along with 3 Doors Down, Matchbox Twenty, MxPx, and Relient K. 👍

Actually, I believe it’s inappropriate, period. I know a lot of people will diagree with me on that, but it’s just my opinion.

Yes, but it’s just music, not a portal to Hell.
A lot of you seem to over-react to lyrics and a band’s reputation if they’ve been played on MTV a million times.

I highly doubt a kid is going to get into self-mutilation and become “anti-God” by listening to a pop-punk band’s music. Keep in mind that the more opposition a kid faces regarding music usually makes it more tempting than it would be if there was freedom to choose any kind of music to listen to.

My mom’s 47, she’s a Christian (yes, she goes to church every Sunday and prays, etc), and she owns Green Day’s American Idiot. She says while there is a lot of cussing, it is basically an anti-war message.

F— yes, I do. :rolleyes:

I haven’t read anywhere in the Bible where it says cussing is a sin, I only remember reading that people should not take the Lord’s name in vain.

And about my post before this; if any of you arepro-war (and verbally pooping on Green Day’s lyrics on American Idiot), you’re all messed up. :tsktsk:
I know some older people who listen to Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold”, but it never made them want to go out and strangle themselves/others. 😛
