If God didn’t like Green Day, he would have smited them a long time ago.
and don’t aid the sinner!

Hmm…
Well my tattoo artist worships God and even speaks at his church, they all cuss (but not every word is “f—” and things like that). But I guess it’s just to emphasize things. 😛
And we all know what a renowned theologian your tattoo artist is, it’s a small wonder he’s not quoted in the Catechism. :whacky:

I wouldn’t personally give it to them for their age not until they’re older. It is basically them ranting on Bush and Iraq in some songs but some are good.

They’re still a good band. Their album Dookie is one of my favorites.

This whole thread has been interesting to me. I remember reading in a book once (I think by C.S. Lewis) that said when people think of the devil as a man in a red suit with horns and a pitch fork, finding it ridiculous and unbelievable, they fall into an error of thinking. This error is thinking that the entire idea of the devil as a real entity is ridiculous because the picture in their head is ridiculous. When CatholicSam said that Green Day was evil I suspect many of us fell into that same error. We may have thought of Hitler, Stalin or some other person generally considered “truly evil” and deceided that since Green Day obviously isn’t “as bad as that” what they say or do is therefore not evil. A thing doesn’t need to be evil in a huge flashy way to drag us down to hell. It also doesn’t need to be wholly evil, just contain enough evil to make us compromise what we know is right or justyify our wrong doing.

I guess my thoughts come down to this. While I liked GreenDay before I converted I can not listen to them now, no matter how original or well written their music may or may not be. I do not want to have to stand before Jesus on the day of my judgement and try to explain to Him that He should not “be so uptight” about my listening to music that trivialized Him and I especially don’t want to have to make that justification while standing next to a child who learned that it was okay to couple Our Lord’s holy name with the F word due to a CD I gave them. The word millstone comes to mind.

Ya know, re-reading all the posts in here, I started thinking about how much I don’t like Green Day, because I don’t like pop-punk. I’m sticking up for a band I don’t like. :ehh:
And I’m only sticking up for non-Christian/non-Catholic bands because their lyrics aren’t meant to be taken to heart (like Green Day’s lyrics).
I mean, if you’re anti-war and/or anti-Bush, their lyrics are more of something you’d agree with. They just say them in a humorous way (or some think it’s humorous).

As I said, the more opposition a kid faces regarding music usually makes it more tempting than it would be if there was freedom to choose any kind of music to listen to.
But, again, from what I’ve noticed, young teens pay the most attention to the following: Voice, drums, guitar, bass. And any other instrument in there. Yes, there are similar bands like Green Day that are religious, but their sound isn’t exactly the same.

And you know, it’s starting to sound lame that a parent would control their teenager that much, seeing as they’re getting older. I can see giving restrictions to a 10 year old, but as a child is getting into his/her teens, they should be allowed a little more freedom in their own choice-making, like what simple idiotic band they listen to. Music is music, it’s not going to send them straight to Hell when they die.

If a band straight-up bashes God in every single song, like any angsty “goth” metal band like Slipknot (:rotfl:), then sure, prevent your kid from listening to them.

But at least let your kid be open-minded about music without you thinking they’ll take the lyrics to heart and “follow” them. 😑

I’m only saying that since they’re growing, they need to start making their own choices, a good time to start would be in their teens. Reality: they’re not going to be young forever, and they’re not always going to listen to what you think they should do.
Knowing how my aunt raises her daughters, I wouldn’t want my kids (when I have them) to be that sheltered from the real world. When my cousins grow up and move out, they’re going to be completly shocked at other people for their beliefs, views, and opinions.

Another one of my aunts thinks her kids are perfect little angels because they’ve been in church since they were born, she denies what they do and what they listen to (but of course a child is going to rebel against his/her strict parent/s later on, she just has 5 of them, and adopted four little kids earlier this year to make them “perfect Christians” - as she says, compared to her first 5).

This is a direct quote from the lyrics of a Green Day song off of the American Idiot CD titled “Jesus of Suburbia”

(part one) jesus of suburbia

Im the son of rage and love
the jesus of suburbia
from the bible of “none of the above”
on a steady diet or soda pop and ritalin
no one ever died for my sins in hell
as far and i can tell
at least the ones i got away with
but theres nothing wrong
this is how im supposed to be
in the land of make belive
that dont belive in me
get my television fix sitting on my crucifix
the living room in my private womb
while the moms and Brads are away
to fall in love and fall in deist
to alcohol and cigerettes and Mary Jane

You can all figure this one out on your own. Oh yeah and if im not mistaken they have a new CD or DVD or somethin coming out titled “Bullet in a Bible”

And can ya believe it? There’s a-whole-nother meaning to the song!*

Wow!:
American Idiot was written to tell a story (a “punk rock opera”). The title of the album in itself, and it’s art, explains of what’s to come. There’s much confusion to actually what this album and all of its songs mean, and it’s questioned to what it could mean. I’m following, basically, with my own outlook, and from information from the band.

DEFINITIONS IN THE STORY:
J./JOS/the Idiot of America: The Jesus of Suburbia
Tunny: Random person met on the street who Jimmy befriends
The Underbelly: JOS/Jimmy’s group of friends
Mom and Brad: JOS’ parents. The way that JOS refers to his father as Brad, could mean that is father is gone and Brad is a stepfather, which would explain why he’s calling him by name.

READ Basically, there’s a confused, disoriented, angsty kid wrapped around a world of misconception and he has nowhere to go and feels hopeless and miserable. So this kid, the Jesus of Suburbia, is just crying out an anthem for the world to hear, screaming miserably “Don’t wanna be an American Idiot…” He sees that he’s stuck in this ‘redneck agenda’ and there’s not a damn thing he can do to change it.
JESUS OF SUBURBIA (CITY OF THE DAMNED, I DON’T CARE, DEARLY BELOVED, TALES OF ANOTHER BROKEN HOME)

Everyone on the album has their own track. Jesus of Suburbia basically introduces us to the Jesus of Suburbia, how he was brought up in rage, and love, his atmosphere, friends, and basic general information. Part I, JOS, is just an introduction. “I’m the son of rage and love, the Jesus of Suburbia…”…Part II, City of The Damned, is just a crying out for help, hating his town, his city, and his overall miserable life that he lives. Part III, I Don’t Care, is properly named and is about just that. JOS’ apathetic screams of pain and how he just doesn’t ****ing care about anything anymore. Part IV, Dearly Beloved, is JOS asking if what he’s feeling is natural, how he can get out, and if anyone can understand…Tales Of Another Broken Home, Part V, is basically the end of the anthem. JOS is fed up, ****ed up, and just decides to quit town and quit the life that he’s living. “I don’t feel any shame, I won’t apologize. When there ain’t NOWHERE you can go. RUNNING AWAY from pain, when you feel victimized, tales from another broken home”…and he just leaves.

The wonders of Google.
Hopefully you over-reacting kids read the whole thing.
But let’s continue to think he’s talking about the one in Heaven, 'cause you know, He’s the only one with the name Jesus. Would the song be considered as a metaphor? Or something else?

So is it OK for people to call themselves Jesus? Metaphorical or not, it is taking the Lord’s name in vain.

So what if there’s a hidden meaning? So what? That’s no reason to use my Lord’s Holy Name in such a disrespectful way. No way at all.

He’s your God, but He’s not Green Day’s God.
It’s a song.
It’s a song about an angsty kid, not your God.
They’re a popular band with fans who mostly do not believe in God.
And, the song wasn’t directed at your God, SO WHAT? Nobody said you or any of the other Catholics who listen to God-lovers-only music had to listen to Green Day, the well-known anti-religion band, or even acknowledge their existance.

If you don’t like something, ignore it instead of b----ing about it. I believe that’s called “common sense”.

Well, correct me if I’m mistaken, but this is a Catholic forum, and the topic of this Catholic thread was started by a Catholic parent who wanted to know if Green Day was appropriate music for her Catholic daughter. If you’re going to waste time and reply to these threads, you might as well give a little extra thought and put together a coherent argument.

And as a parent she should look up facts about Green Day and their songs, or talk to her daughter about their lyrics/message and see if she would still want to listen to them then.
If she didn’t want her daughter to listen to them, she would’ve taken the hint when she heard that Wal-Mart doesn’t carry it because of the lyrics.

I do give a little extra thought, I actually give a lot of thought. I just know that if I said my thoughts even more on this little forum, one of you will textually attack me on it. 🙂 I’d assume freedom of speech is only for Catholics on here.

Catholic forum, Catholic thread, Catholic parent, Catholic daughter, and a non-Catholic band. The Catholic parent had her answer/decision when she was thinking about it.

Many posters above have expressed legitimate concerns about Green Day and the band’s new cd. Their concern is rooted in the fact that Green Day is anti-religion, writes questionable lyrics and have enough status to lead people, especially teens, by their poor example.

You have dismissed these concerns, used profanity and told those posters they don’t have common sense because they will not ignore something they “don’t like.”

The concern is much more than simply not liking the band. A priest recently told me that the Church believes that anything that leads away from God is an anti-Christ. It seems reasonable to assume they are leading some people away from God, and that is evil.

If you disagree with us, fine, but there is nothing wrong with expressing our concerns, especially if we feel that something is leading others away from Jesus. I am sure that He would not want us to simply ignore something as serious as this.

God bless.

Bottom line - are they a role model for you or your children? I say - no way!

Bottom line - are they a role model for you or your children? I say - no way!
Then who is a realistic role model?

It is important to remember that children are not bumbling idiots, impressional, taking everything they ever come across and use it in a negative way. Especially a girl of thirteen, is she a child, or a young adult? Do not be fooled into thinking that “children” are that impressional.

I have to say that I do not have a problem with the CD or the band. If you are afraid that your child would become corrupted by them, then it is best to try and address the issues rather than just run away from them, if you choose to always hide your children away from the issues in our society, then it will only have a worse effect later on.

if i want a message, i’ll go to western union.

i dislike when people who are supposed to be entertaining turn into political zombies. green day, if you read this, and bruce springsteen and the rest of the liberal artists… take note:
the chrismyster doesn’t want you to mix politics and music. especially if your liberal, democrat and wrong.

Ted Nugent on the otherhand… there is a right thinking American!
