Groundbreaking series on Catholicism to air on PBS this fall

I am going to incorporate this series into my home-taught religion lessons for my middle-schooler. Fr. Barron is a very good priest, and these videos will be more easily digested than the (excellent) text books I will be using. Set your DVRS, DVD recorders or VCRs if anyone still uses them.
 
sorry if someone already gave this information, but when is it airing? i think i saw in september, but i don’t know the dates.

I don’t think the first episode’s debut date is out yet.

That’s why I’m a little worried. If people are looking for that “engaging entertainment”, “up in your face” factors, they won’t find it.

I like Father Barron. I heard him speak at the Living the Faith Catholic Conference, last March. He was the last speaker on the final second day. A few of us really enjoyed his talk, but a lot people were very lukewarm about him, and his talk.

They were screening a full episode of Catholicism at the end of his talk. My group didn’t stay—too tired after 2 full days of the conference. 😦 Majority ruled.

Well, the kinds of folks who would tune in to a series about the Church would, I would think, be pretty excited about the breadth of knowledge and historical perspective which Fr. Barron would bring.

They aren’t going to want the kind of heavy handedness and platitudes that appeal to those drawn to the more assertive apologists.
 
I saw the preview, and it looks really good. I went to the PBS website, however, and couldn’t find anything about when it will start. Is there any news about when it will air on tv?

I am a disciple of Fr. Barron. (wordonfire.org) You will be too if you watch his videos (either on W O F or YOUTUBE). I can not wait to see the Catholicism dvd series.

I heard someone mention October, but don’t remember where I saw that. I’ll have to keep watching for it.
 
Thanks for the info. I’ll just keep checking back here for news, and I’ll also look at PBS every once in a while until something shows up.
 
I found this quote attributed to the Word on Fire site, I can not say for sure that it is accurate:

“So far, over 76 PBS stations have agreed to air part of the series (up to 4 episodes). We will know air dates closer to September 1st. WTTW in Chicago is the presenting station and will broadcast the first episode on October 13th at 8 pm. Washington, D.C. (WETA) will premiere the series on Sept. 22nd and 29th (two hours, two episodes per night). We are in talks with other networks regarding the remaining 6 episodes and international broadcasts.”

So it may be that all of the PBS stations may not air the series, and those that do may only air 4 of the 10 episodes. It is $149 for the 10 one hour DVDs and $18.47 for the companion book. Judging by the reviews it is worth it.
 
Well, I contacted my local PBS station asking if they were planning on airing this show. Her response was, “This program is not currently scheduled to air. I’ve shared your email with our program director, so he can consider for the future.” I guess I’ll have to save up for it, and purchase the DVD set.
 
You just gave me the idea to contact my local PBS station and ask the same thing. Maybe if we told our fellow Catholics to do the same it would make a difference.

Some parishes are buying the DVD set to show to RCIA candidates.

I just send an e-mail enquiring about “Catholicism” of PBS in my area. I will now tell all my friends to do the same. 🙂 Unfortunately Catholics are a minority where I live - so we’ll see.
