Britain faces big chill as ocean current slows
Jonathan Leake, Science Editor
http://127.0.0.1:1027/bug.cgi CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing.

They have found that one of the “engines” driving the Gulf Stream — the sinking of supercooled water in the Greenland Sea — has weakened to less than a quarter of its former strength.

NI_MPU(‘middle’);The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big changes in the current over the next few years or decades. Paradoxically, it could lead to Britain and northwestern and Europe undergoing a sharp drop in temperatures.

Such a change has long been predicted by scientists but the new research is among the first to show clear experimental evidence of the phenomenon.

Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at Cambridge University, hitched rides under the Arctic ice cap in Royal Navy submarines and used ships to take measurements across the Greenland Sea.

“Until recently we would find giant ‘chimneys’ in the sea where columns of cold, dense water were sinking from the surface to the seabed 3,000 metres below, but now they have almost disappeared,” he said.

“As the water sank it was replaced by warm water flowing in from the south, which kept the circulation going. If that mechanism is slowing, it will mean less heat reaching Europe.”

Such a change could have a severe impact on Britain, which lies on the same latitude as Siberia and ought to be much colder. The Gulf Stream transports 27,000 times more heat to British shores than all the nation’s power supplies could provide, warming Britain by 5-8C.

Wadhams and his colleagues believe, however, that just such changes could be well under way. They predict that the slowing of the Gulf Stream is likely to be accompanied by other effects, such as the complete summer melting of the Arctic ice cap by as early as 2020 and almost certainly by 2080. This would spell disaster for Arctic wildlife such as the polar bear, which could face extinction.

Wadhams’s submarine journeys took him under the North Polar ice cap, using sonar to survey the ice from underneath. He has measured how the ice has become 46% thinner over the past 20 years. The results from these surveys prompted him to focus on a feature called the Odden ice shelf, which should grow out into the Greenland Sea every winter and recede in summer.

The growth of this shelf should trigger the annual formation of the sinking water columns. As sea water freezes to form the shelf, the ice crystals expel their salt into the surrounding water, making it heavier than the water below.

However, the Odden ice shelf has stopped forming. It last appeared in full in 1997. “In the past we could see nine to 12 giant columns forming under the shelf each year. In our latest cruise, we found only two and they were so weak that the sinking water could not reach the seabed,” said Wadhams, who disclosed the findings at a meeting of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna.

The exact effect of such changes is hard to predict because currents and weather systems take years to respond and because there are two other areas around the north Atlantic where water sinks, helping to maintain circulation. Less is known about how climate change is affecting these.

However, Wadhams suggests the effect could be dramatic. “One of the frightening things in the film The Day After Tomorrow showed how the circulation in the Atlantic Ocean is upset because the sinking of cold water in the north Atlantic suddenly stops,” he said. “The sinking is stopping, albeit much more slowly than in the film — over years rather than a few days. If it continues, the effect will be to cool the climate of northern Europe.” One possibility is that Europe will freeze; another is that the slowing of the Gulf Stream may keep Europe cool as global warming heats the rest of the world — but with more extremes of weather.

…when the planet was in the grip of the ice age, was global warming a good thing?

Still think global warming is a myth?

😛
The planet is always warming and cooling. DOn’t see what the big deal is.

I don’t recall anyone saying global warming was a myth, only a natural phenomenom. We know it’s happening and we are learning some of the dynamics of it but still don’t have a clue as to why - just wild speculation so far.

Yes I do, especially if you think that we humans have much to do with the cause of it… Go read Michael Creighton’s “**State of Fear” **which is indeed fiction, but more imporantly, read his research footnotes which are not!

In the geologic sceme of things, the planet is still in the process of coming out of the “Great Ice age”. There will be further warmings and further Ice Ages to come.

I don’t know who said that, but I do know that when you kill off people by abortion and euthanasia saying that overpopulation is causing it:nope: I do NOT agree with that at ALL:(

this came to my mind…

Rev 7:1 After his I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that no wind should blow on the earth, or on the sea, or upon any tree.
Rev 7:2 And I saw another angel ascend from the sunrising, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a great voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

Global warming is not a myth. The idea that we can somehow prevent it (or that we caused it), THAT’S a myth.

The earth has a natural warming-and-cooling cycle. Ice ages come and go regularly, and have been doing so long before the first man lit the first camp fire.

The myth is that the sole cause Global Warming is and only is man. The fact is that man’s effect on the climate is minimal.

I remember in the early 80’s that these SAME scientists were fearmongering a comming ice age.

They leared from that mistake – this time they’ve coppered their bets, predicting both global warming and an ice age at the same time.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon12.gif

Not so much a myth as a marketing ploy for radical environmentalism that has gotten out of hand.

Let me guess…somehow Bush is going to be blamed for this. 😉
Yeah, apparently they have a satellite that shoots a flame thrower at the atmosphere, hence global warming.

Maybe you don’t know why it’s happening, Geezer, but climatologists know that global warming is happening because of man’s introduction of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Maybe if you’re really a geezer, it doesn’t matter to you. Scoff at it. You’ll be dead before we really see the consequences. Maybe think of your kids though, or your grandkids. They’ll be the ones living in that world.

One wonders how much evidence is required to show people that something untoward is going on. Could it be that evidence is only as good as the effect it has on the recipient? In other words

“If it’s going to adversely effect my way of life then I don’t believe it, on the other hand if it’s going to add to my way of life then I do believe it!”

There is an abundance of evidence that climate change is an established fact, there is also an abundance of evidence that this change is being influenced by man. Now nobody in their right mind would claim that all climatic changes are the sole result of mans actions, but equally so it would be as stupid to believe that mans influence and actions have had absolutely no effect on the current levels of climate change.

Much is made of the fact that ice ages and warming periods have occured frequently in the past, when man was not around. This is of course quite true, but it is also true that the geological activity of the earth was also much more active and the production of “Greenhouse” gases were a result of this action. We now have a period of relatively stable activity but the emmisions are the same now through mans actions as they were in times past.

So don’t just disregard, get real!!

The “experts” are merely speculating, just as they did 35 or so years ago when they announced an impending ice age. Remember “Silent Spring”? Man has not introduced greenhouse gases into the atmosphere; they were already there. We probably added to them, but we didn’t invent them. One major volcanic eruption spews more crud into the atmosphere than man has since he first learned to control fire, so please don’t be so smug about knowing the cause of the current warming trend. It’s a natural cyclical phenomenom. Period!

Quite true but, in the past when volcanoes discharged into the atmosphere there was an abundance of greenary (Trees etc.) and plankton in the sea to soak up the excess CO2 quite quickly.

Man has destroyed a great number of the trees and vegetation and his overuse of pesticides and insecticides and others has reduced both the quantity and effectiveness of natures own vacuum cleaners. So the problem is not one of pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere it’s one of destroying the natural balance God created. (Free will can have it’s down as well as up side). Or do you not think God created the natural order of things or that man cannot upset it?
