Gun ownership in this day and age

If their product malfunctions and causes injury, gun manufacturers have no less liability than any drug manufacturer. But if the product works exactly as it is supposed to do, but does so by a person who is misusing the product, they should be treated no differently than any other manufacturer, correct?
While civil liability can be applied to sellers and manufacturers of nearly every product, as a result of a 2005 law the gun industry is immune from nearly all lawsuits.
This is the problem. I’m not talking about using the gun as designed…I’m talking about improperly manufactured guns.

This is the problem. I’m not talking about using the gun as designed…I’m talking about improperly manufactured guns.
But that is not what the 2005 Stated.

From the law itself

To prohibit causes of action against manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and importers of firearms or ammunition products, and their trade associations, for the harm caused solely by the criminal or unlawful misuse of firearm products or ammunition products by others when the product functioned as designed and intended."

And here is the New York Times on the legislation
The bill, which is identical to one approved in July by the Senate, is aimed at ending a spate of lawsuits by individuals and municipalities, including New York City, seeking to hold gun manufacturers and dealers liable for negligence when their weapons are used in crimes.

While it bars such suits, the measure contains an exception allowing certain cases involving defective weapons or criminal behavior by a gun maker or dealer, such as knowingly selling a weapon to someone who has failed a criminal background check.

Produce evidence that a gun manufacturer cannot be sued for a manufacturing fault that results in injury or other harm. That sounds about as reliable as Booker’s falsehood about toy guns being subject to more regulation than actual guns (which even the Washington Post awarded three Pinocchios to that statement).

Can you, or anyone on this thread, state with any sort of confidence that you will not in future become suicidal and, if in legal possession of a firearm, then use it to take your own life? Of course not - anyone can in certain circumstances.
Are you advocating for a total gun ban? Where are you going with this? I certainly don’t want to be in a position where I don’t have a gun when I need it because someone somewhere may shoot themselves with their own gun. Plenty of people kill themselves with rope and sleeping pills. I can’t help what others do.

Toy guns do have to have that orange thingy at the muzzle. I don’t think real guns do. To even it out, real guns should be required to have orange muzzle tips.

No…Wait…

Maybe, but you could also get killed by police who might id you as the mass shooter (not to mention the risks of cross-fire, needing to have a super aim in a split second decision, etc) just one more one reason of why arming everybody does not make sen
Yes i might get killed by friendly fire, but chances are far better I will take out the active shooter before he kills 50 more innocencts. Who better to have already ON SCENE than a firearm trained defender while the police are ten miles away? I’ll take that risk anytime even if it does get me taken out. Again, what better gift than to lay down your life for others? What do you think God will say to such a warrior who saved a grade school full of kids, or a mall packed with seniors?
Clearly he is favoring a peaceful resolution rather using deadly force. The Catholic Church “permits” using the deadly force if no other option is available and either your life or somebody else is in danger. It is clearly a last resource option, never the first.
Ok, and when you are in a mall, theater, school etc and you hear pop, pop, pop, followed by screams and the air is full of blood and brain matter I happen to think the last resource has arrived. Are you saying I am wrong? Or would you prefer I say to the gun wielding person "please Mr. Terrorist or Mr. Psyco let us pray together and I will council you on why it is not nice to kill 100 people you don’t know. " Really? Your comments are ridiculous!
that does not mean that there should be no laws (or for them to be relaxed), or how would you held criminals accountable and prosecute them ?
I actually laugh when I see “Gun free zone” or “no firearms allowed in this store” signs. The notices and signs are not worth the paper they are on. Out west in areas where good old boys drive around with rifles and shotguns mounted to their pickups are the safest ares. It is the SOFT targets like Gun Free Zones that are hit.

I seriously doubt that our society will chose a total gun ban. But if we did, that would be our choice as a society, and the members of that society would have to live with it. There might be people - in fact, I’m certain there would be people - who would disagree with the choice - as you have done here. But that is the nature of all communal decisions. There isn’t a single law or regulation in the US that someone wishes were not there. So your citing your personal opposition to the decision is not sufficient to convince everyone else to change their minds. But as I said, this is all highly hypothetical, because such a decision is extremely unlikely in this nation.

Well, as I’ve said before around here, there are many of us in the northeastern part of California who want to separate and form a 51st state–Jefferson. Might not have much chance but there’s a lot of support.

Sierra black bear get big. That’s why I got a big frame Ruger.
Good luck with the State of Jefferson.

Bears are not a big problem here, though they and mountain lions do exist here. But for my purposes, an AR-15 is a very good “varmint rifle”. Perfect for groundhogs, armadillos, both of which will put holes in a field to throw you off your tractor and under the haybine.

Also for feral hogs; one of the worst curses on the planet. Coyotes are plentiful and really a problem for sheep and goat raisers, but cattle hold their own easily, and a good breed will protect their calves. If I had sheep or goats I would be gunning for coyotes all the time.

But if we did, that would be our choice as a society, and the members of that society would have to live with it.
The last estimate I saw is that there are at least 357 million guns in America. And fortunately the good people at companies like Colt, Smith and Wesson, Glock, etc keep making more every day. If a block of idiots got together and banned all guns what would happen? Law abiding citizens who registered their guns would have them confiscated. So the criminals who, of coarse, did not turn in their firearms will then victimize the innocent. Thus is what Nazi storm troopers did to the unarmed German public.

It is on a side note, ( excuse me , friends…) but I did as you suggested and dogs really diminished the problem drastically with armadillos.
We have just finished repairing big damage around the pool filling it it even with metal mesh so that they won t dig if they come back.
They had even caused a crack in the pool. Everything looked like Swiss cheese full of holes. So thank you.It was good advice, and we are real people behind the screen :slightly_smiling_face:with real problems!

As the Nazi Party rose to power in Germany, it inherited a 1928 gun registration law that had replaced a total ban on gun ownership imposed on a defeated Germany after World War I. The 1928 law created a permit system to own and sell firearms and ammunition. So the first act of the Nazis was to loosen gun restrictions. The Nazis adopted a new gun law in 1938. According to an analysis by Bernard Harcour, a professor at Columbia University School of Law, it loosened gun ownership rules in several ways. It deregulated the buying and selling of rifles, shotguns and ammunition. It made handguns easier to own by allowing anyone with a hunting license to buy, sell or carry one at any time. (You didn’t need to be hunting.) It also extended the permit period from one year to three and gave local officials more discretion in letting people under 18 get a gun.

The regulations to implement this law, rather than the law itself, did impose new limits on one group: Jews.

Apparently that does not happen often enough to bring down the gun deaths. You still have not offered any alternate explanation as to why our gun death rate is so much higher than in comparable nations.
Most of that is drug gang activity. It’s tragic when an innocent kid is caught in the middle occasionally, but I am fine with Crips taking out Bloods or vice versa. I certainly have no dog in that fight.

BTW, in an earlier post you said you would be willing to die as a martyr rather than kill an attacker. I asked you if you also signed up your wife and kids to martyrdom but you never answered. What say you?

Although strictly martyrs die for their faith. If you don’t defend you and your family it will most likely be because a crack head wants to rape the women and kill off the witnesses when he takes the $10.76 in your wallet.

Yeah I found the article you copied on the net too. The anti gun lobby will slant things any way they can. The truth is Hitler’s goal was to disarm people especially the Jewish community.

And what if you take out some innocent people accidentally (for example during cross-fire) ? What if you slow down the police response because when they arrive they do not know who the active shooter is and who is the good guy “street vigilante” ? And as a result more innocent people die. I do not think God will say “Well done warrior !” Video games and movies make it seem great and easy, but the real life traumatizing events of mass shooting is another thing.

The US is already the nation with the most armed civilians in the world, however that has not helped to slow down the endless mass shootings, if anything it has made them even more prevalent.
Ok, and when you are in a mall, theater, school etc and you hear pop, pop, pop, followed by screams and the air is full of blood and brain matter
I am saying as the Church does that the mentality of shooting first and asking questions later is leading toward more violence and gun related deaths and injuries, not less. More guns = more violence as simple as that. It is laughable to think under such circumstances armed “good” civilians will do better than highly trained police officers who do full-time training.
It is the SOFT targets like Gun Free Zones that are hit.
If that was the case why, was then military installations such as Fort Hood and a Washington Navy yard attacked by a gunman they obviously knew there would be plenty of “good” guys with weapons to defend the innocent, however a lot of innocent people died. Gun free zones follow the same basic principle, the more guns allowed in one place the more likely for things to go horribly “wrong”.

So, any article that does not agree with your view of history is slanted by the gun lobby, but your article from the Mises Institute is unbiased?

Regardless, measures taken by an evil regime for their evil purposes do not imply that any regime that employs similar measures is necessarily evil. They say that Mussolini made the trains run on time in Italy. That does not mean that making trains run on time is evil.

Of possible interest, I read that gun deaths are almost entirely concentrated in very limited locations. It’s not even a matter of neighborhoods. It’s certain small locations in neighborhoods; less than a city block. It’s the “money turf” for gangs that they’ll have deadly battles over.

Also, “comparable countries” are hard to find. The biggest single factor in murders is the age of the population. Almost all murders are committed by men, age about 18 to 30. So while Mexico, for example, has much tougher gun laws than the U.S., its murder rate is much higher. Its population is considerably younger.

You can “what if” all you want, but the most likely scenerio is that since I am already on scene I will be the first to engage the shooter or shooters. If I don’t have a good shot, eg. Innocents in the way I won’t take it. If I do have an open shot the shooter is dead. Yeah I am that sure.

Psyco killers usually don’t go to the range. I do. Psyco killers usually have not gone to classes taught by SWAT and former Navy SEAL’s. I have.

You keep missing the fact (delibretly I think) that the people on scene are in the best position to act. Every second means more Innocents dead. The Columbine active shooters killed themselves when they heard police coming. Had an on scene armed teacher reacted when this massacre started the number of dead would be less.
The US is already the nation with the most armed civilians in the world, however that has not helped to slow down the endless mass shootings, if anything it has made them even more prevalent.
Yeah, because law abiding citizens are not armed in these soft targets. If you are in a building with an active shooter what good is your gun if it’s in your car in the parking lot?

Wow, EVERY single thing you said above is wrong. Please tell me what “questions” you need to ask while Innocents are being killed? No, you need to act and shoot the bad guys. You have no idea of what you are talking about.

John Lott wrote a book that proved more guns = less crime. As people with legal CCW permits increase in an area crime decreases.
It is laughable to think under such circumstances armed “good” civilians will do better than highly trained police officers who do full-time training
Again you are not listening. As I have said when seconds count the police are minutes away. Think about that. And actually many police budgets are small. Some departments only qualify once a year.
If that was the case why, was then military installations such as Fort Hood and a Washington Navy yard attacked by a gunman they obviously knew there would be plenty of “good” guys with weapons to defend the innoce
Your lack of knowledge is amazing! The military is NOT ALLOWED to be armed while on base. They depend on military police just like any citizen.

You need to either grow up or wise up because you don’t seem to understand how things are.

Do you think Jesus is fine with it
I think just like everything else that occurs in the world Jesus hopes we will do the right thing but we have free will. Personally I have never shed a tear over gang wars. However, my point was that most of the gunplay you cited was due to gang activity not law abiding citizens shooting up the town.
No, I didn’t. I said that if I did die following Christ, I would be in good company.
And I asked you if that fate is also fine for your loved ones. What about a class room full of innocent kids? What about a mall full of helpless senior citizens? I am asking you LeafByNiggle if you could arm yourself and kill a would be terrorist, or general psycotic who is actively killing Innocents like above would you do it?
