I finished it last nigt and I loved it. It was a very fitting ending to an awsome books series. I loved how everything turned out with Snape. How he really didn’t like Harry, but wanted to protect him because it was Lily’s son. He was a very touching charactor.
As to what some others were saying about Dumbledore’s death being euthenasia, I highy doubt that that was the angle that JKR was going for. I don’t get why people have to nit pick every part of a book.

SPOILERS!!

I was very sad about the deaths of Fred, Lupin, and Tonks. Really surprising. Poor George:(

OK, post your reaction to The Deathly Hallows here, in this thread.😃
AWESOME! Lots of action and answers to alot of questions ( including the horcruxes)

sad that so many ppl died in though…

God Bless,
Podo

I do understand there was a “point” to it, but that doesn’t mean it was a very good point. The whole series is about Harry growing up and maturing until he’s able to defeat Vol…I mean, Tom Riddle - that’s nothing new. I just think most of the book was gratuitous and it felt like Rowling was desparately trying to make it “epic” for the sake of making it epic.

A description of the 40 year journey of the Jews doesn’t even take 400 pages. There’s no way the journey of a couple months should have taken that long to describe.

I know. I was simply saying that Harry could have destroyed all the horcruxes, but not defeated Riddle. It ultimately came down to him having Malfoy’s wand, which was pure luck. I was expecting Harry’s resurrection to have some relevance to defeating Riddle. Throwing in Malfoy’s wand rendered all of that as cursory which is frustrating when the *whole book *is about those other things.

Perhaps.
Harry Died? I thought Voldemort destroyed the horcrux inside him(harry) but knocked out both himself and harry?

But anyways it wasnt really luck because Harry did defeat Voldemort by mastering the Elder Wand that he disarmed from Malfoy…

After being zapped by Voldemort, Harry encountered Dumbledore in some other realm. I believe Dumbledore told Harry that Harry was now dead, but that Harry had to go back to the land of the living. At the end of the conversation, Harry asks Dumbledore if Harry was really dead, or was it all in Harry’s head. And Dumbledore replied “Does it matter?” (Or something to that effect – I didn’t buy the book, I just read it in Barnes & Noble.:D)

Overall, i liked the book. The ending, i thought, was very fitting, and ended the series very nicely. One of my favorite parts, was when during the marriage of Fleur and Bill, the master of ceremonies or whatever said something along the lines of your souls are now bond together forever. i thought that added a nice touch.

I was under the impression that Snape stoppered death in Dumbledore, like Snape said he could do in the First book, especially considering how the 6th book referred to the first book constantly. " I can teach you how to stopper death, brew glory, etc"

So if their world has the ability to stopper death for a short time, Dumbledore really does not have life so to speak. He was “living” on borrowed time.

As far as the “shocking” language…I’ve heard homeschoolers use MUCH worse. Doesn’t make it right, but it happens to people who consider themselves quite holy.

I was very happy that Snape turned out to be good. Here’s is a thought: even very religious people have nasty sinful habits that they are completely blind to, even while they enjoy picking other Christians apart. Expecting perfect heroes…we are all called to be heroes and saints and usually fall short of that ideal. But we still try to do good. Perfect are heroes are boring.

I don’t know that I’d call it merely luck, but it was certainly lucky for Harry that Narcissa Malfoy’s love for her immediate family overpowered her love for the Black family and any devotion she had to You Know Who’s cause. Her treachery toward *YKW *in the forest seemed critical.

Perhaps Harry could still have prevailed if she had been otherwise. If *YKW *would have responded with Bond villain hubris: *“Well stand up, Potter, and face me wand to wand” *instead of a simple *“Well stand back and give me another clear shot” *but still…

Woo Hoo!

I finished last night so I don’t have to be afraid of this thread anymore! 🙂

No one’s pointed anything out about poor Dobby’s death yet.
Dobby spent his whole life doing the hard work and serving others.
It was very fitting that Harry physically dug his grave as a tribute instead of magically doing it.

Dobby was one of my favorites:crying: .

b) Everytime we thought that Snape was lingering on Harry’s eyes, just to read his mind or convey contempt, it could have been for the reason to see Lily, which, isn’t romantic or sweet, it is just plain creepy to look in the eyes of an 11 - 16 year old boy and think about your first love.
I think Harry reminded him of Lily, of course. He had her eyes. I DON’T think it meant Snape was attracted to Harry.
d) “Look…at…me…” So he can look into Lily’s eyes as he dies…EWWWWWWw!!!
I didn’t read it that way at all. I thought it meant Snape was telling Harry to look at his memories…as in “look at my memories”. If I misunderstood and it is meant more the way you describe, why is that so disgusting? I don’t think it implies any attraction of Snape to Harry!
e) He takes the letter with her love and signature, the picture of the family, keeps Lily, AND THROWS THE PART WITH JAMES AND HARRY UNDER THE DRESSER!!! After 16/17 years, he still hasn’t learned anything. He hasn’t grown in love or appreciation, he keeps the pretty picture of the first girl he ever had feelings for to do God knows what while looking at it.
People often keep mementos of loved ones. I have letters and cards from family and friends, some who have died. Whatever you are implying sounds sick, and I don’t think it was J.K. Rowling’s intent.

Snape was a sad character who grew up unloved, and was therefore stunted. However, he did redeem himself by going back to the good side. He DID do some things that were despicable, but he still did promise to protect Harry and also to be faithful to Dumbledore. He is sad and complex. He never stopped loving Lily, and yes, he wanted her for himself, but that couldn’t have been his motive after she had died!

I didn’t like the death pact for Snape to kill Dumbledore, but didn’t see it as purely euthanasia. And Dumbledore himself said Harry was the better man.

Haven’t read Harry Potter, but have read C S Lewis "Screw Tape Letters several times through out my many years ( 73 ). Find it interesting that so many people have put so much time into reading this book and I pray daily that God will bring some good out of it ( He always does ! ). What bothers me is that my young grandbabies are exposed to it and I tell my children to be careful of their formation @ this young age. In C.S, Lewis book, he exposes the devil ( if all else fails, set a bon fire here & there & there & there & there etc. and when we are running around putting all these bon fires out those little devils can come in for the kill. Is this where we’re @ in today’s world ?

It wasn’t the fact that he simply had Malfoy’s wand. It was the fact that he had mastered Malfoy by taking his wand-- hence that the Elder Wand now owed allegiance to him. Perhaps its nitpicking, but I think it makes a bit of a difference.

I just got another literary plug: was anyone else reminded strongly of Wuthering Heights when reading Snape’s memories? There are some interesting parallels between him and Heathcliff- ugly, dark, unwanted child, antisocial but pines away for his childhood love, who marries his rival then dies young, leaving a child whom he is charged to protect and whom he does not like (although Lily is not a selfish brat like Cathy). Hmm, does J.K. Rowling like her literary classics? 🙂

  1. Concerning the “euthanasia” question: at first, I did see Snape killing Dumbledore as euthanasia and morally wrong, but then I remembered about the spell Vol. cast on Malfoy. Unless Dumbledore was killed, Malfoy would die. I think the moment Dumbledore found out about that, he was willing to allow himself to be killed so that Draco could live, but he didn’t want to have Draco do it and tear his soul, so he appealed to Snape. Maybe the speech to Snape was Dumbledore’s way of getting Snape to do what he asked.
  2. Snape is now one of my favorite characters. How sad! The whole character of Snape really speaks to JKR’s theme of the power of love. Lily and Dumbledore were probably the only two people who ever showed Snape love and that was what won his allegiance over Voldemort.
Great book!

To the person who said that Snape only asked Harry (commanded/ORDERED Harry) to look at him was to convey his memories, he had already had the memories. We don’t get that Harry picked up any more by looking at him. No, I am telling you, it makes sense that he was lusting for Lily, long after she was dead. We can now go back and re-read all the books and infer this whenever Snape always looked at Harry a little longer, always in the eye.

Do we all agree Lily never loved him as he would have liked? She once concidered him a best friend, but, never loved him as such. I will accept Dumbledore as the only person who loved him because it surely was never Lily.

Lily did love Snape. She was his friend. She didn’t love him the way he wanted her to, but when you are friends with someone, you love them.

:crying: I wanted to cry while reading ’ The Prince’s Tale’

although Snape did a few questionable things, I can’t help but feel sympathy for the guy.

I always held hope out for him. I also love his character in the movies. The Cast Alan perfectly. can’t wait to see the final battle scene on the big screem!

this is what i wrote on other blog about the books-
BUT it is still a great series about teaching wrong from right and good vs evil and that every action has a concenquence no matter what. Thats what i love about them. It’s the same thing in LOTR. Even the smallest person can change history. No matter what age you are, you have to make the decisions for your life and those decision can effect other people. You are responsible for the outcome of those actions but you can change your world no matter how small or how weak others perceive you to be.

Also the whole series teaches about GOOD vs EVIL and how in the end Love conquers all. Love is the most powerful thing in the world and no amount of magic can ever defeat love.
