Although I realize that this wasn’t directed at me, this comparison utterly fails because it is comparing something is inherently evil with something that is not.

Exposing children to porn isn’t at all a necessity because it meant solely for lust and this is all it accomplishes.

HP and other books that merely depict morally questionable situations are not inherently wrong.
I realized they are not comprable, but the question was intended to draw out something else. One does not need to watch a porn movie to know it contains sinful material, all one needs to do is to ask the opinion of someone who has seen such films. Likewise, one does not need to read HP to have a valid opinion.

As I mentioned, if you’re going to ban HP, you’re going to have to ban a great deal more. HP certainly presents some undesirable circumstances, the most prevalent of which is the idea of disobedience to elders and parents, but these idea are prevalent not only in most other forms of media but in our communication and relationships with other human beings.

To be extremely blunt and frank (hopefully while still remaining within reasonable bounds of charity), banning HP isn’t going to cut it. You’re going to have to go much furthur if you are truly going to adhere to that principle.
I am not an advocate of banning HP. I just won’t let my kids read them, and I am also very careful with other materials as well.

Tom hs never read the books and never seen the movies yet he is the most vocal opponet of HP movies in CAF

I am not sure I am the most vocal, yet I am very passionate about the subject for my own personal reasons. I personally have experienced some things in my life that have made me very sensitive to the evil charms of stories like HP, the vast majority of people simply think I have no clue. That’s okay.

Harry Potter is porn? Reminds me of the classic question"Are you still beating your wife"?
No, of course not. As I stated above, one does not need to watch a porn movie to know it contains sinful material, all one needs to do is to ask the opinion of someone who has seen such films. Likewise, one does not need to read HP to have a valid opinion.

It is like me saying my opinion on Einsteins Theory of realativity is valid because i took an algebra course once. My daughter intoduced me to harry Potter books a year ago and readng them has been one of the great joys of my 55 years on this earth. Only Coleen McCouloghs Masters of Rome series rise above them as far as i am concerned.

Harry Potter is just a story. It isn’t going to teach kids to use magic. If you want to get rid of it then also go ahead and get rid of all the fairy tales with witches, fairies and whatnot. And it also is a story of good vs. evil, which is wholly apparent.

Fine, enjoy.

The Chief Exorcist of Rome disagrees.

Again, Pornography just doesn’t contain sinful material, it is sinful merely to watch it because it wholly and inherently evil.

HP contains sinful situations, but it is not sinful to watch/read it, nor is it necessarily sinful to view anything that contains sinful situations. This is the issue at hand. There is nothing wrong with exposure to a something sinful except in situations where a child’s innocence would be compromised or where it would present a serious temptation for sin.

Given the two main points HP critics harp on (the “magic” and “disobedience to elders/parents”), HP really doesn’t do anything to validate either of these two conditions assuming your child has read/heard the story Cinderella 🤷

I never said it was sinful to watch/read HP. I said/say it is spiritually unwise.

Wow nine pages of thread 😉

To start with, I really enjoy fantasy Novels (and think that sticking them in Si-fi is travesty 😉 ) I’ve read Tolkien, C.S Lewis, many other lesser known secular authors. Some of which (Terry Goodkind) would be considered quite controversial in there own right. I have read all but the latest Harry Potter novel and enjoyed reading them, they are very well written, interesting and intriguing.

I have no issue with pretend magic, whether its casts on objects or on people. I don’t agree with a lot of things that people think are “evil”, I played DnD (yes I mean Dungeons and Dragons) and think it as a game foundation is completely moral neural. I have played more RPG’s than I really care to admit too 😉

My Children will not be allowed to read Harry Potter, I am actually undecided as to what to do with the multiple Harry Potter books I own because I don’t want to give them away. I decided this LONG before I heard of the Pope or anyone else speaking out against them and these are my reasons.

Incantations are a completely unnecessary part of the story, in fact never in any form of RPG, DnD or other novels have I seen actual incantations. Through some unfortunate events in my family I’m also aware that to really cast spells (yeah the demonic ones) you don’t need an exact incantations, you just need the desire to use power to achieve a certain purpose. Thank you J.K. Rowling for giving impressionable young kids some ideas of what to do and how to do it.

It is set in Modern day London. Again this is a departure form the vast majority of fantasy, the one book I can think of that was set on Earth was actually a post apocalypse earth baring no resemblance to earth now. Having a fantasy book set in the here and now continues to confuse reality form fiction.

Ends justify the means is prevalent in the stories. Harry does what ever he has (Lie cheats disobeys) to do achieve his ends.

Bottom line is I think it can open an unhealthy interest in the occult for children. I also know that there is only so much we can do to keep our children on the straight and narrow. The ages these book are geared for actually seem to be the prime ages to get involved. 11-16 year olds are already going through major emotional and physical changes, its a very difficult time for them to deal with life in general. Some children regardless of parenting are going to be drawn to things the occult and no amount of teaching them whats right and wrong is going to help. I’m not going to personally proved material that in the wrong hands could lead them down that path.

Incantations can work!!! WOW I am going to reread my Potter books. I would love to cast an imperius spell on my banker and make him open the vault! Then I learn how to make Leprechaun gold and pay off all my debts!

That displays a disturbing lack of respect or naivety about the occult. So I guess you have no problems with Ouija boards either.

I suppose you could start trying it out and seeing if it works, I’d start with something simple, like lighting a candle with out any normal means of fire. Just FYI it probably won’t work in a blessed house, at least not until your more powerful in which case I’m sure you’ll be well past just lighting candles.

The One Ring is in Middle Earth not England. You can’t get there reality check.

There are wardrobes in England but you will find they all have firm backs. Run in to it as much as you want it… reality check,

Not at all-that is why i read Harry Potter. To gain unlimite power, the be able to do anything as long as the ends justify the means and above all because i have a crush on the Waitress at the Hogsmead.
