Did you meet with your Priest prior to commencing your RCIA class?
I tried. The Church has 4 Priests, but I still have not been able to make a connection. When I first stopped by the Church office a few months ago, they told me a meeting with a Priest was not needed, but to just join the RCIA class. Which I have done.😦

Have you been interviewed at all?

It seems to me that we know more about your spiritual progress than your RCIA facilitator - not good! 😦

Harry, this is not what should be happening, not in your case. Each case is individual and each person must be dealt with individually. If all that happened is you made an enquiry to see a Priest because you desire to become Catholic and you were asked simply to go to RCIA by a layperson without any conversation about your spiritual life then this is just not adequate. For you, you need an appointment with a Priest and you need to speak to him about your life, your experiences and your spiritual journey and understanding of the faith.

Pick up the phone this evening and telephone the Priest in charge of your Parish explain briefly (keep it brief, don’t ramble on, stay to the point) your situation and ask for an appointment to speak with him.

I hope you don’t mind me saying, because I am closely following your spiritual journey on the forums and you are always in my prayers, that I hope you do not become overly preoccupied with the dead and praying for them. Take that comment of mine on the understanding that I know that you know about the Catholic Teaching on praying for the dead and I am speaking in your best interests and in Christian friendship to you for your best spiritual interests.

Ring the Priest, Harry and ask to meet with him very soon. If the Priest decides it is best you attend RCIA then go along with it obediently, but he may well decide that you can be received before then. Whatever happens will be for the best for you and for the Church.

Sometimes the longer we wait, the greater we appreciate it…

For me it went this way and it’s the constant in my heart…
It was too long before I loved the Lord, too long before I knew Him , too long I left it, I now long to have loved Him sooner, but how much more now I appreciate Him, how much greater the love.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Update at 1:05 PM PST. Called the Church again, and got hold of one of the Priests. He seemed interested, and informed me to call back tomorrow…👍

I also noted that I kept calling him “Sir” when I should be calling him “FATHER”. One of those Protestant things:rolleyes:

This ties in to my deceased biological father, and the fairly obvious requirements of that 4th Commandment. This is heavy going stuff and you DON’T want to know all the details. I am not required to forget what he did to me. I am not required to condone what he did to me. But I have to FORGIVE what he did to me, and forgive him unconditionally.

I understand Harry. I also understand your great desire to forgive him and this is a grace of God, it is a wonderful blessing to you and a great sign of your faith and I, for one, am very proud of you and admire you.

You know that it is enough to will to forgive someone, that there need not be emotions of love (which is not love in itself, because love is an act of the will, we decide we love and the emotions either come or they don’t, that is irrelevant) and in this willing to forgive we actually do love. Simply will to forgive. Your desire to forgive and be merciful to your late father is just a glimpse of the greater mercy and forgiveness of God. How much greater is God’s Love and Mercy, infinitely so…

Love knows no fear. (Gospel according to St John- the Apostle Jesus loved)

Don’t you think in your willing to forgive your biological father that you will earn great merit for your father and that Jesus will also forgive you of everything you may ever have done? It is easier to offer a Mass than it is to will to forgive someone. Forgiveness, Mercy and Love is the whole of the Gospel culminating in Calvary and the Resurrection, in one Word is…Jesus.

When you get your appointment with your Priest, which you will, then speak to him about your biological father too.

One thing I have always done is I have been brutally honest with my confessor and with my spiritual director in everything in my life and it has always brought Jesus’ grace, healing, joy and peace to me and to those I love. I desire the same for you, Harry.

In my prayers

22 October 2006,

Pre-Cats Session #5
We received a 2 page sheet titled DISCERNMENT For Candidates For Preparation Before The Rite Of Acceptance Into The Order Of Catechumens # 36, 37, & 42 - RCIA
Question #2: What is your favorite story in the Bible? With whom do you identify in the story?

Jonah. Probably the funniest story in the Bible, making its points nonetheless. Jonah’s indignation when the people of the great city actually listen to him AND REPENT. And the closing words where God points out that in the city are those who do not know their right from their left (infants) and also much cattle.

It turns out my RCIA Catechuman Class finally did something useful. Yesterday we were given this 90 page booklet, but I didn’t get around to reading it until today

OUTLINES OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH, printed by The Leaflet Missal Company.👍

The first 65 pages are an excellent summery of the Church’s beliefs, The rest is devoted to common prayers.

Of course, being one of those RCIA Candidate’s who is an obnoxious know-it-all  I didn’t learn anything new. But I will carry this booklet around to help answer questions on Faith and Doctrine that I am getting as more find out about my RCIA path.

Even better, all those prayers in the back are those I use, now in one handy booklet to carry around in my lunch bag

PLUS…pant…pant…THE NICENE CREED, which I will have to learn all over again for my Profession of Faith. I used to know all the creeds by heart back in my Lutheran Confirmation days (where I was an obnoxious know-it-all Lutheran Teenager)😃

Wednesday 25 October

Finally got around to those other DISCERNMENT questions:D

3: How do you describe your relationship to Christ?

Duh. Well, most certainly not the huggy-wuggy lovey-dovey Jesus of RCIA classes. More like the picture on my CD of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Jesus of the Sacred Heart. Friendly enough, concerned with me, but he has things he wants me to do in return. And his instructions on the Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet are quite clear. 🙂

4: How do you pray?

“How”? Sitting down, mostly. Aside from bum knees, sitting down allows Fluffy to purr away in my lap. I understand that some would think of this as a “distraction”, I’m afraid I am back to my old Pagan mindset when it concerns reciting the Rosary with Fluffy purring up a storm on my lap, and believe that Mother Mary is level headed and resonable, does understand, and even has a sense of humor.:o

Sunday, 29 October

The lady in charge of the RCIA program had been to an all-day seminar yesterday, concerning RCIA programs. She came back and apologized to me, She had learned a lot at that seminar, especially on the way Candidates do not need to go through the whole Catechuman process.

She told me that, yes, if I wanted to be confirmed earlier, I could probably have it done in the next Sunday or two. That I already know more and do more then most of the “cafeteria catholics”

She also asked me if I wanted to stay the course because…this was a surprise…she felt I was an asset to the class, with much that could help the others.

I pondered, and agreed to stay the course. She said that in the future it would be made clear to the congregation, during Rite of Acceptence and all Sundays later (dismissals) concerning those who were candidates and those who were catechumans.

She also approved of my scheduled two week retreat next February, and agreed that if I could do a full confession there, it would ease the way for a much shorter confession at the Easter Vigil. Bring on the padded kneelers:D

I would like to thank ALL in this forum who have been patient with me, and have shown me why it is a good idea to stay the course and help out my RCIA class. I have to give up the Instant Gratification of being a catholic RIGHT NOW, but I now know that you were correct. Again, thank you. 👍

Typed, as always, with Fluffy “helping out”. Without her “assisstence”, I could have typed this in half the time:rolleyes:

Oh Great, Harry! I pray for your early release from “purgatory” and you turn around and jump back in.😃

This is really wonderful. Seems like this stint in “purgatory” is more of an honor than a punishment! And as I think of it, real purgatory will be an honor to be cleansed for preparation to meet our God.

Still keep us posted on your journey.🙂

Yey Harry!!!:clapping: :dancing:

I am so very pleased for you and will continue to keep you in my prayers.

God Bless you and Fluffy too!

Well, maybe this has something to do with that Heroic Act Of Charity I did awhile ago?:o

“Let me place the Rosary around a sinner’s neck, and he will not escape me.” — St. Louis De Montfort

I have a hunch that Montfort was also speaking for Mother Mary. In any case, all went well at the Rite Of Acceptance. I met my appointed sponser, an elderly woman who, by coincidence, is active in the Rosary group at St. Philomena Church.

She quite approved of my intent to make my confirmation name “Mary”, She also was happy that I was NOT rushing into Monfort’s Total Consecration, but was awaiting my two week spiritual retreat next February to prepare myself. We meet again at the Rosary Group’s Luncheon next Sunday.👍

Of course, as this was a once-in-lifetime-event, I dressed up for the occasion.

I completely shaved and had a haircut

White shirt and tie

Large ceremonial brown scapular, worn over the shirt, a visable mark of my being a Candidate rather then a Catechuman.

My tri-colored cingulem around my waist, with the ends hanging down my right side. Gold, Silver, and White, braided togather. A mark of my vows of chastity and obediance

Large wood bead Rosary, draped over the cingulem and hanging down my left side. Clickity-clacking when I walked. If you got it, flaunt it.😃

I’d swear there was a gloating smirk on my Sponser’s face when we came to that part of the ceremony where she gave those seven signs of the cross on my body. :o

Any questions?

Congratulations! You’re on your way in what will hopefully be a blessed and very fruitful journey.

I’m totally confused. After reading your other posts I thought you were in RCIA? What was this the Rite of Acceptance into?

Congratulations! You mentioned shaving completely…Were you a man before? 😉 Did you have a beard?

Post pictures if you have any! God bless you.

I am indeed in RCIA, and this Rite Of Acceptance was part of RCIA. It means we were presented to the congregation, who “accepted” us as Candidates and Catechumans of St. Philomena Church:)

This acceptance means we will now attend the 11 AM Mass, as a group. A special section of pews will be cordoned off for our exclusive use. It is at the front and to the left, so the congregation can see us. :o

After the Homily, but before the Eucherist, we will be “dismissed”, to attend another hour or so of RCIA class in our classroom.

This “Dismissal” will continue most Sundays from now on, the last one to be on Palm Sunday.
