Has converting to Catholicism shrunk your dating pool?

I don’t think being Catholic would shrink your dating pool anymore than being Protestant, or a dog lover, or rich or poor, or wanting only someone with a job, or someone who wants children…or…or…or…

What I’m saying is, everything about us ‘limits’ our dating pool, because we all have standards and things we want and need in a spouse.

FWIW, I’ve dated two men in the last three years. One was as far from Catholic as you can possibly get, practicing his own made up faith roughly based on Shinto-ism and having spent years into some very UN-Catholic activities. He stopped all of those activities because he wanted to be with me. He came to perpetual adoration with me, and I believe had we stayed together, he would have some day come to church with me.

The second man was a Catholic-bashing atheist in his younger years, who later became a Baptist. A few months after I started seeing him, he asked to come to Mass with me. A few months later, he joined RCIA. On his own initiative. He is now going to daily Mass.

Had I said no to him because he called himself ‘spiritual but not religious,’ none of this would have happened. So becoming Catholic doesn’t necessarily mean you will only be accepted by Catholics, or that you should only accept Catholics.

Patience is a virtue.

God may be increasing your virtue in patience and recreating you (possibly recreating your future spouse) as you convert deeper into our rich catholic faith. God used lonliness before original sin to increase Adams admiration of Eve. I have found that lonliness is paired with patience. It’s not the happiest place, but gives much fruit to those who can cultivate it.

I’m married now. I have a loving husband, two loving girls (2&3) and I still experience lonliness admist all the noise and commotion going on. I am glad God used my time as a single lady to cultivate and to teach me patience during times of lonliness. Hope you can find the treasure in your walk too.

I’ve been blessed to not have encountered rejections based on my religious orientation:) While I’m very respectful of non-Catholics and have dated a few, I found that still gravitate towards Catholics. Preference? Perhaps but there’s truth to birds of the same feather flocking together…

All the best,
Christie

I post mostly about social justice and dating, but today I have a lighter question.

Have any of you found that converting to Catholicism has shrunk your dating pool? Have members of the other sex rejected you for your beliefs? How did you overcome that?

I admit, this is one fear I have if I convert. (The other being disapproval from my Protestant parents.) Someone wanna convince me this is silly?
See the first post I made with this account. That should answer the question. Or don’t. The answer is yes. But I don’t mind, because my life is about following Jesus. If dating is to be part of that, I do not yet know, but right now, I am not worried too much about it.

I had to laugh. Sorry.

Try being a divorced, non-Christian, non-Republican in the deep South. You’ll find out how small your dating pool is then.

😉

You’re joining an organization that is one of the largest christian denominations in the US and world. I’m sure you’ll find someone.

I guess that depends on your perspective. Solidifying your beliefs can be seen as either shrinking your dating pool, or as fine tuning your bow & arrow so that you can better hit your target (that is: a successful partner and future spouse).

If your goal is to have as wide of a dating pool as possible, then it’s easy: just constantly change your beliefs depending on what woman you meet. If you decide to become Catholic, and pledge to what it teaches, it means that from that point forward, you ought to have a far clearer and more accurate idea on what you’re looking for in a man or woman 🙂

“Has converting to Catholicism shrunk your dating pool?”

That question gave me a good chuckle but it is valid…just sounds funny.

Having entered a year and a half ago I have two points.

First, yes. It has shrunk my dating pool in that there are less (in quantity) women that I want to actually date or can actually see myself spending the rest of my life with.

Secondly, it has helped me discern the actual qualities in a woman that I am looking for, which has helped me feel less lost.

To sum it up: overall it is a good thing…now I know what I’m looking for and places to find her.

P.S. There are tons of Catholic women and men that are single at all ages. Pray, don’t lose hope and if worst comes to worst marry a Protestant and convert them lol
