Has Lady Gaga finally taken things too far? Singer is slammed by disability groups after performing on stage in a wheelchair

My brother makes his living as an entertainer… He told me that “If you can’t be good, be controversial… or loud…”

Lady Gaga is simply plying her trade. She can’t really sing without a computer keeping her on key… So she does things to make people talk about her, and apparently this thread proves that it is one thing she is good at.

God bless

So what was her artistic intention to be in a wheelchair while wearing a mermaid tail?
Beats me. What was her artistic intention in the music video for Alejandro?

Some things are art. Some things are garbage. Oftentimes there is a fine line between the two. And oftentimes we just have to use common sense to determine one from another. Not everything can be passed as art.

Actually, she can sing. I’ve heard her acapella a few times, and she’s got a good voice.

Who decides that?
That is actually a very good question, one that not even the government can really resolve.

But my take is that when an exhibition (such as a music video in this case) offends people in such large numbers or repeatedly, it’s garbage, plain and simple. That’s my two cents. Everyone defines art differently.

Sometimes when you are being offensive, you’re doing something right.

Duchamp’s Fountain definitely was offensive to people, but now is considered a great work of art.

The Perfect Moment by Robert Mapplethorpe was and still is offensive. Hardly anyone considers it art. Offending people isn’t always right.

That’s a very bold statement to make. Proof for this? I would think the average joe with very little education and understanding of art would think this was not art. But those who are educated in art would be less likely to condemn it. Never listen to the average joe.

And why not? They’re never right, ever? They can’t see the artistic value in a piece? Only artists can- and only them?

The Perfect Moment was homoerotic porn. Don’t even think of passing that off as art.

To you it is porn, but to others it is a work of art with a valid message/meaning/form of expression. Why must people try to censor? It does nothing but harm. It also gives the thing being censored more publicity. It’s ridiculous how people are sometimes.

The average joe has been left mindless and persuaded by a culture of images and lies. Their opinion is not their own but what is being fed to them. Does that make me an elitist? No, not at all. I want the average joe to get out of that cycle of devolution, whereas an elitist would not want them to.

Have you heard her without a microphone? Check en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-Tune . This is something she (and about 50% of popular musicians todayy) uses. I doubt anyone that could sing would use one. It works with any voice through a microphone so is used for A cappella music quite often. Most times you hear the Star Spangled Banner at a ballgame, you’re hearing Auto-tune at work.

God bless

So do I, and you, and everyone else… with auto-tune. But then, she still sounds good live, so I think she has a good voice too - just not as good as you normally here.

That’s the nature of the music business though. At the end of the day, I don’t think Lady Gaga is any worse than most of what passes for talent these days. She’s not as bad as some would like to make her out to be, nor is she the greatest entertainer of her generation. She’s extremely smart though to have everyone buy into what she’s selling. I find her voice when she’s singing just acapella or with the piano entertaining, that’s all.

Her sales have been hurting. It’s a publicity stunt so people remember to buy her songs.

That doesn’t make this any more right though.
Of course it’s a publicity stunt. Everything she does is a publicity stunt, whether her sales are hurting or soaring.

That doesn’t make this any more wrong though.

Once long ago when people were offensive and obnoxious we ignored them and did not feed their pathetic attempts to get attention by acting out eventually they went away. Now we discuss them ad nauseum on the internet, news, twitter etc… IGNORE her and she will go away.
I agree Alix1912. Best answer I’ve seen in weeks. She does these things not because of “artistic” reasons but because she needs the attention. She knows that people are out there just waiting to see what she does next. She has a great voice, too bad she has to call out for attention in the most offensive ways possible.

Many of the artists in the pop/hip-hop/rap industry have good voices on their own. It’s a shame they have to essentially waste it on such sub-par music (I hesitate to call it complete trash, but there are better genres out there to apply your talents to).

Glad to see this thread isn’t hateful like past Gaga threads.
😃

I can she why people may not be a fan of her work, but I think she she’s an amazing artist and an advertising genius…she gets herself out there like no one else.
