What the two of you are missing is that there is, by definition, more than one victim of a “hate crime”. Such crimes, though perpetrated against an individual, are in fact an assault upon a community. They put the entire group into a state of fear. Living in a bad neighborhood is one thing; living in a place where you will be singled out for particular malice due to some quality of your person, is something else.
Hate crimes do more damage to the community and so are deserving of distinction in prosecution and punishment.

It would be interesting to statistically find out exactly what ethnic group most crimes against Catholics has been affected.

No, hate crimes create a climate of being special and different than everyone else. It leads to tribalism, or a Balkanization effect, where everyone retreats into their special group. This is not what America is about, and this is a very slippery slope where we all become part of a special group of people, with special protections. Everyone is now jumping on the bandwagon, from different nationalities, to religous groups, to sexual preferances. It’s all disturbing to someone who believes in the Bill of Rights and Constitution.

I don’t care if somebody hits me over the head because he loves me or hates me, the fact that he hit me is whats important. Rob me because you hate me or need the money, whats the difference, I’ve still been robbed?

Hate crimes is garbage law…
