Hate crimes against Catholics up nearly 25 percent. Did Prop 8 play a role?

If you watch and listen to what the Catholic league reports this is nothing new , but it could be more frequent, or just more reported than in the past

Christianity is the most perscuted faith in the world. There are countries that have laws making owning a bible illegal. The book Jesus Freakes listed a stat that said there was an estemated 128000 martyers in 1998. It is only going to get worse. Frankly I look forward to being killed for my faith I hope its real old school like being skinned and set on fire or crucified! that would be so cool!!!

Hahahahaha Yeah man that would be cool. If im going to die for christ i would love to go out in the most painful and hardcore way.😃

Yes, Christianity, but more specifically, Catholicism is under attack like never before. The more the secular progressives gain control of power, you will see an increase. There is even debate going on in England, as to whether teaching certain elements of the Anglican faith should be considered a hate crime. We are not far from that here.

Define “hate crime”. Have Catholics been killed as a result of Prop. 8? Have they lost their jobs because they are Catholic? Have they been denied homes because they are Catholic? I don’t see anything in the article which details what those hate crimes are that have been perpetrated against Catholics.

The article mentions the number of incidences classified as hate crimes by the FBI. Here are the hate crime data collection guidelines of the FBI: fbi.gov/ucr/hatecrime.pdf

Are you doubting the FBI’s methods or their conclusions?

Robert, did I express any kind of doubt in my post? Before I respond to YOUR comment, answer that question for me.

Never mind. I neither have the time nor interest in waiting around for you to answer.

Robert, would you consider it a hate crime if you lost your job because you were Catholic? Or if you lost your home because you were Catholic? Because that is something that gay people endure. I’m simply asking if that is the nature of the “hate crimes” being reported by Catholics, or if they are indeed genuine hate crimes. Excuse me if I take these news articles with a grain of salt, particularly when they are coming from biased sources, such as another Catholic news website. The article states: ““Proposition 8 in California last November led to violence against Catholics”. Are they certain Prop. 8 was the motive? How do they know? What are the specific examples of violence that were committed as a result of Prop. 8? I’d be much more inclined to read an official article from an unbiased national news source.

Regarding the numbers posted in that article, if you do the math you’ll see that roughly 500 of those 1519 crimes were directed at Jewish people. May I presume you are as outraged by all the anti-Jewish hate crimes as the anti-Catholic ones? Indeed, do you express your outrage at all the hate crimes committed against gays and lesbians?

Only 75 of the total were directed toward Catholics - a jump of only 14 over the course of 2 years. I hardly consider that as alarming as the crimes against the Jewish people. But because it works out to 25%, and a SUPPOSED correlation with Prop. 8, Catholics are going to inflate the matter and turn it into a “We are being persecuted” issue. If you have 8 crimes committed one year, and then 10 similar crimes committed two years later, that also works out to a 25% increase over two years. How many new Catholics were welcomed into the church during those two years? Was that figured into the 25% increase?

It looks like those are reports on “Anti-Catholicism” - not “hate crimes.” They may be interesting reading, but they aren’t the “hate crimes” referenced in the article.
You are right…I am sorry

I can’t find the breakdown of the exact crimes against Catholics, but here are the types of crimes included in the FBI numbers:
fbi.gov/ucr/hc2008/methodology.html
The law enforcement agencies that voluntarily participate in the Hate Crime Statistics Program collect details about an offender’s bias motivation associated with 11 offense types already being reported to the UCR Program: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, aggravated assault, simple assault, and intimidation (crimes against persons); and robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, and destruction/damage/vandalism (crimes against property).
So…there were 75 of those types of crimes in 2008 motivated by anti-Catholic bias.

Which is 75 too many.

The figures show that against catholics, there was 1 case of aggravated assault, 3 cases of simple assault, and 3 cases of intimidation. 7 total, up from 5 last year. The other crimes were crimes against property, usually vandalism.

Jews on the other hand were victims of 25 cases of aggravated assault, 58 cases of simple assault, and 208 cases of intimidation. 40 times as many, despite having rather fewer numbers of adherents.

Homosexuals were victims of 5 murders, 6 rapes, 232 aggravated assaults, 501 simple assaults, and 419 cases of intimidation. The biggest increase was in California, immediately after the campaign against homosexuality and Proposition 8.

No data was collected about trans people - until the Hate Crimes legislation was passed recently, they weren’t counted - but at least 19 were murdered just from newspaper accounts of the most egregious crimes.

Using these percentages, if you take the reported statistics for violent crimes against the GLB population (1.51%) and applied it to Catholics in the same ratio…

It’s the equivalent of 81 Murders, 97 rapes, 3,764 Aggravated Assaults, and 8,129 simple Assaults.

12,072 people raped, murdered, or violently attacked. Versus 7.

You can see why claims of Catholics being victimised by gays ring just a little bit hollow, and why the claims that gays don’t need hate crimes protection - but Catholics do - tend to meet with outrage by the GLBs.

Wow. That is a huge percentage. Anti-Catholicism is the last acceptable form of bigotry though so it doesn’t surprise me. The Catholic Church is the one true Church and as such, it will be persecuted. How sad. 😦

Ourfaith was started by a guy who was tortured to death, and all but one of his apostles were murdered then they started in on all of his followers. this continues to this very day. I am so sick of hearing about gays complaining about discrimantion. Christians are the most persecuted group on the planet but you don’t hear us complaning do you? when was the last time you heard a christian whine and complain about christans being fed to the lions? All crimes are hate crimes if you kill someone it is becuse of hatred in the heart regardless of who the murder victim is. That is why I think the idea of some crimes being hate crimes and others not based of who a person is is just plain stupid. If a jew kills another jew it is not a hate crime even though the killer had hate in his heart. if white anglo-saxon kills a jew it is a hate crime.

Surely one crime never excuses another…I think all crimes have a basis of hatred in them
