A friend of mine is a Russian Orthodox. NO WATER after midnight before receiving Holy Communion. That’s ridiculous. BUT, the choir members are allowed cough drops. Interesting, aye?
You are aware the Eastern Orthodox churches are distinct from the Oriental Orthodox churches? As far as I know, the Oriental, Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic churches today continue to have stricter canonical requirements for reception. The degrees of severity vary.
Do your wife and child/children. sip water, listen to mp3s , hold blessing crosses etc too, at Mass?took a drink from a water bottle before Mass which he said was “forbidden.” He said it was wrong for me to listen to music on an mp3 player before Mass (not that he could hear it). He said that I should not hold a blessing cross during Mass and that I should not use it to bless myself. He also said that I should not be tracing a cross on the Gospel reading of my misallete before doing so on my forehead, lips and heart(!) Finally he said my “5-on-5 posture” during the Lord’s Prayer was “not approved.”
I was by myself when this happened.Do your wife and child/children. sip water, listen to mp3s , hold blessing crosses etc too, at Mass?
Were they verbally attacked too?
Bringing a water bottle into the Church … is boorish behavior.
Then why do deacons, altar servers, lady readers and others sitting at the altar have water bottles and are drinking water during the Mass?it is impolite to bring a water bottle to Mass.
Oh yeah? I can hear these MP3 players from far away and they are very disturbing and rude to play them anywhere, especially in Church while people are trying to meditate and pray. Can’t we have a little quiet and relief from this disgusting rap music, soul music, pop singers, etc., at least in church? He said it was wrong for me to listen to music on an mp3 player before Mass (not that he could hear it).
Whether or not I was listening to music would be absolutely none of your business (so long as you could not hear it, which this man could not.)The only thing i would have called you on would have been the mp3. And it would not have been in the pew either. Maybe if i ran into you at the back or outside and that would have been by pure chance.
I seen what you were listening to in an earlier post. But when we sit down in the pew before Mass it should be a time of silent prayer/reflection.
That’s pure hogwash. Mine is absolutely silent to those around me.I can hear these MP3 players from far away
Which is why, other than abiding by common sense manners, you should just do whatever it is you do and let the haters hate.Whether or not I was listening to music would be absolutely none of your business (so long as you could not hear it, which this man could not.)
That’s quite true, thank you.Which is why, other than abiding by common sense manners, you should just do whatever it is you do and let the haters hate.
I dispute that. If your MP3 player can be heard in your ear, it can be heard by others. I know from several experiences of having to listen to music played by someone on MP3 players while in an elevator. The music goes to their ear, but can be heard by others. People who use MP3 players are a rude bunch having no consideration to those around them who have to listen to their disgusting music.Mine is absolutely silent to those around me.
I believe that’s indeed the case, although some EC’s would beg to differ…IIRC, Eastern Catholics don’t all have the same canonical requirements, but maybe I am only thinking of fast days / abstinence.
What’s the problem? Did you not read what I actually wrote? Or are you intentionally spinning things so that you can attack? It sounds that person was right. It is inappropriate for you to be drinking from water bottles during mass. You should be apying attention to teh priest and he readings during mass not listening to mp3 players.
