Have you ever moved, and then decided to move 'back home'?

There’s also a problem with the “catholicness” up north. I find the churchs there take it for granted. They aren’t quite as active is my parish here in RDU. If I wanted to be involved in as many ministries up there as I am involved in down here i would literally have to approch the priest, then probably bishop and archbishop about the idea of creating young adult ministries etc… We have all that set up down here, it’s a little easier in that regard

I agree. In our prior parish…I started a women’s Catholic book club. It took so long to get that thing approved. Here, you send an email to someone, and in a day, they say yes or no to your request. I am not sure why that was…what do you make of it? *

I moved to California… beautiful, perfect weather California… from awful winter Indiana.

I loved it.

Then… the job market went south and I moved home.

I miss it. I wish I would have stayed. All my friends/family are here in Indiana but…
They came to visit all the time when I was in beautiful and perfect weather California.

Since the sky is gray and the weather is horrible right now… I cant imagine leaving sunshine and palm trees.

its normal to miss people, and places.

its not a reason to move “back” IF there are good reasons to be where you are. part of the issue appears to be that you still think of yourself as living “away from home” because you still think of Pittsburg as “home”

i would say, instead of moving. why not save up for a visit? or invite your cold northern friends to come stay with you for a weekend (appts only!) heck, i live in Philly… i would visit! i HATE cold.

i would say: think carefully about what you really miss.
make a list, and think about is it the long term friends? well KEEP them. my mom still visits old college chums from across the country!
is it the architecture? can you make your new home look more cozy?
is it the fall leaves? pictures, and decorations help.

seriously think about what you miss… and either try to find something like in where you are… or arrange to import it/visit it

Come to visit anytime… Phillie…hmmm…you get more snow, don’t you, than Pgh? Thanks you for your thoughts here, I am going to follow some of your advice here, and spend this weekend with the family, coming up with a game plan (my dh’s favorite word lol) and see what makes sense. Enough lamenting…I find myself getting annoyed that I have to hear my own lamenting at this point. I want a resolve, my dh wants a resolve…we need to decide…stay or move…and what does God want in all of this, most importantly. Thank you.

I love all of our brothers and sisters in Christ, but I miss the Catholic-ness of Pittsburgh…it’s something I took for granted. I took for granted the beautiful churches, the reverent masses (that could be heard at EVERY parish), the fire and brimstone priests, homemade perogies, (it was special there), etc etc…I think you have helped me see what one of my main problems is here in Florida.

A lot of the churches are going back to a more traditional architecture (my parish church is HUGE ) and it’s not hard to find a Latin mass. I guess it’s because Northern VA is more of a mixing bowl. Oh yeah…and they are proposing a third diocese in the state.

not offended… just pretending. I mean, if you don’t like NC that just means you’re ignorant, and to be pitied. ( KIDDING… )
I currently live in a pretty catholic area, and I have to say it’s nice to have daily Mass and confession and a catholic school, and many different churches to choose from, not to mention 24 hour adoration 3 blocks from me. I don’t know, though, that living in a more “catholic” area makes it true that you can find a more reverent Mass. I think for that, you have to live in a more reverent area. that being said, the catholic community in my hometown, although smaller, is definitely strong! My folks were transplants from the North when they settled there, and over many years, as they reverted and grew stronger in their own faith, managed to build up around them a solid Catholic community for us to grow up in.

I just don’t think they’re used to the competition honestly… We Catholics are one church, if you stay in the same Rite it literally doesn’t matter which physical building you go to, it’s all the same. If you criss cross Rites you’re still basically OK except you might get confused as to some of the prayer postures (Byzantines don’t kneel, and they do the sign of the cross oppisite as compared to Roman Rite) but they’re on the same Leturgical calandar. So in Catholic dominated area’s I’m not so sure there’s any great desire or even push (from the community) to have very active parishes.

Protistants however are very well used to competition. Each “church” is an island unto it’s self, if you’ve moved from one church to one down the street in many respects you may as well be converting to an all together different version of Christianity (and you probably are). I think this basic fact has bred a very dynamic environment and quite a bit more marketing (I’m not trying to slam Protistants here) than we Catholics are used to. Unfortunetly for the Church it seems to work fairly well, we do lose a lot of members due to bad catechism (espeically in the 70’s & 80’s) which lead to lots of Catholics my age not even understanding the faith, who then see a “boring” mass in a “jugmental” environment and when faced with a host of other options tend to get lured away.

Soooo… The Diocese’s and individual Parish’s down here are adapting. I’ve noticed the Church’s down here do a lot better getting the word out to local Catholics about the existense of the church’s as well as the upcoming events. They’ve also responded by having far more ministries in terms of Faith Formation and Community, and they do a better job advocating and encourging involvement in Leturgical ministries.

My parish even took a page out of the S. Baptist tradition and has a parish counsole elected by the community to be advocates of the members to the pastor. We even get financial statements at least yearly lol. A little more often in these hard times

I think the Church up North can learn a whole lot from what is going on down here. I’ll be honest I actually kind of debate whether it would be best just to enjoy things down here the way they are, or to move up north and see if God might be on my side trying to get things moving and shaking a little more up north lol… Of course there’s always the fear that he might well not have that in mind for me

Which I guess is why I’m just falling back on, letting God decide where I’m going to be.

I moved for a better life and for the most part I got it. Although I’m not a home owner anymore. I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. I know if I moved back I wouldn’t be happy but I’ve always loved the New England area and always will.

I live in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh. Yesterday I was in awe of the colors: red, orange, yellow and brown - blue sky and still green grass. You know, September is paradise here and October is still so beautiful.

I am planting my garlic for winter - that doesn’t work so well down south. Only the sad softneck varieties like the heat. The hardnecks need cold to add to their bite (is there a lesson there, hmmmm).

Dem Stillers are just getting revved up for another Super Bowl run and the Pens are starting strong. We’ll leave the Pirates alone for a while.

I honestly can’t remember a more colorful fall here, the cold wet summer came does have some redeeming value.

It will start to snow in November, you know. Not a lot, just a daily flurry until Lake Erie gets cold enough to stop being a steady supplier of moisture. That daily flurry will remind me that Thanksgiving is coming - my favorite holiday. It will be cold by then, in the 30’s; we’ll put on a fire and drink hot chocolate with all my children and my granddaughter (who lives in Florida).

December will still bring snow flurries, with an occasional coating. It’s cold, but often the sky is so blue, a deep cobalt blue, that it takes your breath away. Hunters will be firing off in the distance, no matter where you are. The smell of burning wood from the chiminies will remind you of being snug and warm inside your home on a cold night.

My goodness, I could not live in a place with only one season. Each season has its own beauty and reminds me of the cycle of life.

So, hello from Pittsburgh; we’re still the same place we’ve been for generations: the world’s best kept secret.

I love fall there…it is definitely the most beautiful and fun time of living up north in general…the one thing I’ll disagree, I lived there for over a decade…there are VERY FEW blue skies. lol Maybe you’re thinking of Denver. lol But, not in Pittsburgh. There are occasional beautiful blue skies during winter…but as a matter of fact, Pittsburgh is known for only having like 65 days of actual sunshine.

But, I agree otherwise. I knew there was a reason I liked reading your posts, Chosen. lol
