Have you ever seen Jesus Christ Superstar? What did you think?

I wonder those folks keep jumping up and down the way they do. That looks tiring.
That was embarrassing!

I saw the movie in the theatre when it came out. Two thumbs DOWN!
At the time I was in my 20’s and liked some of the songs. Looking back, this was a terrible idea for a movie!

I liked Godspell better. Both are great music, bad theology. At my age and depth of Catholic belief, I don’t think I’d see them today.

Yes, I was 11 and my mom took me and my sister to see it on stage.I Was in awe at the ending…when they closed the curtain and when it opened …the scene of Jesus hanging on the cross was so real it scarred me. I liked the songs especially " I Don’t no How to Love Him" 🦋🦋

Story ends with the crucifixion not the resurrection so a disappointment.
Yes.

I recall my description when I saw it was “a Christological catastrophe.”

Some interesting attempts to understand, though.

If you thought Superstar was spot the hippies, see if you can find a copy of the movie Godspell, from the very same era. Far out, man, far out.

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life. . .oops, wrong song.

It’s been years since I’ve seen it, but it used to be very much part of the zeitgeist, albeit a bit shopworn by the time I was exposed to it. Still it seemed like a radical idea at the time. It generated a few hits that were played on the radio. The rock wasn’t really all that rockin’ however (I believe the music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Weber.) If memory serves there was some mild controversy about casting a black actor as Judas; some people read something unsavory into that. What I remember most vividly about the movie version was how cool it was to see Roman centurions holding machine guns.

Yes saw it performed in the 70s so far off Broadway that I was in a different state and I had the album. Oh those were the days. Enjoyed it and the music very much. Mary Magdalene’s character singing “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” still stands out to me and am looking forward to watching it again for the first time since then this Easter night.

I tend to hum Hosanna on my way to mass, it sort of sets my mind in the proper frame.

Godspell! I had forgotten that one!
My straightlaced parents, who wouldn’t touch a baptist et al with a ten foot pole, had it on LP in the 1970s and loved it.

Way too " hippie " - Woodstock concert goers - for me.
Once every ten years, maybe.
It is a historic entertainment type thing…

I have and I enjoyed it. I don’t have network TV, so I won’t be able to see this production. The only thing I’d like to see is Alice Cooper playing Herod. I do like Alice.

Story ends with the crucifixion not the resurrection so a disappointment. I think they missed the best part is what I guess I am saying. Personally, songs bring back memories of when I heard them on the radio years ago.
Maybe they ended where they did because the resurrection part of the story takes more faith.
