The death penalty is killing to punish. No self defense involved.
Jim, abortion is wrong, but so is capital punishment. Killing is killing.

The Catholic Church is a one-trick pony.
Abortion, abortion, abortion.
I do not favor abortion. I support the church’s stand on this issue.
But can’t we Catholics apply our moral outrage towards other issues, besides abortion?
We do. We also tend to prioritize things. While I am against the DP at least there is some wiggle room [not much in my mind] But usually the individual has killed at least one person in a notorious and cruel manner often in the commission of another felony. Now… lets take:

Murder, murder, murder, of infants. Torn out, or vacuumed out of the womb while very much alive, usually in pieces. Unlike other criminals, he baby has done nothing wrong. Baby butchers usually do this type of thing many times a week. It is a question of how to best use your time and resources, and where the greatest number of injustices, and the magnitude of those injustices take place.

Wrong, the death penalty when used according to Catholic Doctrine is for the purpose of protecting society against violent people.

The need for it is rare, but I see a need for it when a convicted killer continues to kill when he/she is in prison.

Jim

Finally, abortion is an absolute evil. Never acceptable under any situations.
As do I, yet, 99% of the “Pro life” politicians and voters do not agree with us. They are fine and dandy with big, greasy loopholes in every bit of legislation. They take the pat on the head of “incrementalism” smile.

I certainly hope that more Catholic wake up and smell the trickery!

Life in prison without the possibility of parole. There is no need to kill anyone. With the exception of self defense and only when lethal force is absolutely necessary.

I’m referring to a person convicted for life and kills while in prison.

Convicts convicted for life, have nothing to lose by assaulting and killing guards, healthcare workers who work in prisons, other prisoners and even order killings outside of prison.

Such prisoners should be put to death in order to protect others from them.

I’m not advocating across the board capital punishment, but in rare cases when a convicted murder in prison, continues to assault and kill others.

Jim

Has anybody read the article? It is not “daily” or news. I have no idea why it was even written. The action it documents is over six months old. We discussed it here when AB Naumann was actually elected.

I would hope that there should be no communion for politicians who hurt the poor, indigent, and aged through implementing legislation that restricts funding for programs that help those who are in need.
All programs have restricted funding, as the government only has limited resources.

Other than in the case of self-defense, I cannot see any justification for taking the life of another person.
Executing a prisoner is murder.

There seems to be no limit when it comes to resources for armaments.
How many weapons and bombs are enough?
I am against abortion, but I also am against capital punishment.
And I oppose politicians who cut the budget for things that help the poor and needy.

Rare cases. Who gets to decide?
I say there should be no cases.

Thou shall not kill.
A higher authority?
Council of Trent on the 5th Commandment

Execution Of Criminals
Another kind of lawful slaying belongs to the civil authorities, to whom is entrusted power of life and death, by the legal and judicious exercise of which they punish the guilty and protect the innocent. The just use of this power, far from involving the crime of murder, is an act of paramount obedience to this Commandment which prohibits murder.

The end of the Commandment is the preservation and security of human life. Now the punishments inflicted by the civil authority, which is the legitimate avenger of crime, naturally tend to this end, since they give security to life by repressing outrage and violence. Hence these words of David_: In the morning I put to death all the wicked of the land, that I might cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the Lord._

No it’s not murder.

The capital punishment is to defend innocent people from the violent.

Murder is the illegal taking of another life.

Jim

Society gets to decide through the democratically elected representatives.

Jim

Capital punishment is murder. It is taking the life of someone society believes to be not redeemable.
