So much for the idea that he was ‘promoted’ to get him out of the way for the elections! 😃

This is very cool. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds as time goes on.

You can have a lot of heat, but unless the hammer strikes the iron it will never be forged.

I suspect it will be ignored by all but a very few American Catholic bishops. Then called the Ratzinger sent a very explicit letter on this to the United States bishops five years ago and it was pretty much ignored,

True for a while, but I have to think that if you stick enough really good Prelates at the Vatican, then American Bishops aren’t going to have such a free ride.

Yes. Slowly but surely we are getting bishops who are not afraid to tell the faithful they must abide by Church teachings.

Lets just all pray that the USCCB will have the courage to accept and enforce such a ruling.

I’d be satisfied if Archbishop Wuerl of DC accepted and enforced it but I see no reason for optimism on that score.

I think it may take decades to move away from the “Land of Lakes” philosophy that spilled over from the universities and seminaries to the American body of bishops.

It is the likes of Archbishop Burke that give me hope that some of the secularism being taught here can be stemmed, and someday, reversed.

I am not real optimistic about this either. Cardinal Francis George is the head of USCCB now, and I have heard his answer to a question about this posed to him several years ago (I believe during the last election) on a Catholic radio station…he is my Cardinal. He wiggled his way around this and basically said that it is very hard to uphold this. Can’t remember his exact answer but I was very disappointed as he indicated there was really no way around NOT giving communion.  I would be very surprised to see but only a few bishops uphold this. According to the good Cardinal’s answer, he will not come down on this one.😦

Why single out just this one sin by which to judge a politician?
What about those who lie?
What about those who commit adultry?
What about those who covet?
What about those who kill by supporting the death penalty?
What about those who steal (i.e. making decisions based on personal gain rather than the desires of the community)?

Why just politicians?
Most people I know do not hold politicians in high regard; definitely not as moral leaders.
What about community leaders?
What about those people who are popular in the parish?

And what if someone doesn’t know a particular politician’s beliefs?
Shouldn’t we announce why the priest is refusing communion to some but not others so as to prevemt even more confusion among those lay people who are assumed to hold the person in high regard as a moral leader?

What of those who hold the same beliefs but are not a person of reknown? What of those who don’t make their true beliefs known to the public at large (just to those in their local sphere)?

This is a very slippery slope.
It would be good to remember Jeremiah “Only God knows the hearts & minds of me; He will judge each accordingly”

Some seem to be preoccupied with pointing fingers at others and away from themselves.
I am reminded of Jesus’ description of the prayers of the pharisee versus those of the sinner.
Most especially that it was the sinner who went home satisfied.

Jesus did not deny His grace to sinners.
Why are we now attempting to limit that which Jesus Himself proved was limitless?

Go with Love, Go with God

Because voting in support of killing if children is a heinous** public** sin and one who does so seperates themselves from the church.

How would one know if the person presenting themselves for Communion didn’t go to Confession the night before?

The problem here is, the way the Bishops in the US handled the sex abuse scandal, damaged their moral credibility to the point that many Catholics will take such threats with a grain of salt.

What threats?

They wouldn’t. However, as a politician who supports abortion does so in a public manner, he/she would also have the responsibility of publicly recanting such a view in addition to a private confession and absolution.

It’s fairly easy when talking about a politician. In addition to going to confession they would have to publicly repudiate their support of abortion. You can’t support abortion during the week, go to confession on Saturday, and then start supporting abortion again Monday morning.
