I am so glad I found this thread! I only cover at Mass so far, but all the comments really have me thinking… This is really exciting!

Hello!
I also feel called to “cover” full time. I was wondering if anyone had any bible quotes that I could use to help explain to my husband? I notice a great deal of discussion reagarding types of covering. I just wanted to toss out my thought - I’m Catholic, I would want people to know that I am a Catholic who covers. Lastly, what do Catholics wear - manitila (sp).
So, as a covering Catholic that’s what I would wear.
Any bible quotes would be greatly appreciated!

Well there’s really just the one direct scripture quote that I know of, 1 Cor 11:4-15:

***4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head–it is the same as if her head were shaven. 6 For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil. 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 (For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.) 10 That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels. 11 (Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.) 13 Judge for yourselves; is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her pride? For her hair is given to her for a covering. ***

There are other mentions of a woman’s hair being her glory, and then of a woman being subject in all things to her husband. So in a way, it’s seen as a matter of respect and loyalty (is that the right word?) or exclusivisity to your husband. If you cover your head in everyday dress, then only your husband gets to appreciate your full glory as a woman. If that makes sense. :o

Consecrated one, you mentioed wanting to be able to explain this to your husband…what does your husband think about it now? Have you ever talked about it?

First of all, short of writing “Catholic” on your clothing… the only way for people to know you are Catholic is if they notice, for instance your medallions, or your Crucifix.

there WILL be people who think you are Jewish, Muslim, or what not. just as some folks will assume you are in chemotherapy. when i wear head coverings, i generally dont get asked… no one makes much of it… but then i wear scarves that are colorful, match or go with my clothes, and do not look Muslim… in some Jewish areas people ask me if i am Jewish. usually with a hesitant attitude since i “dont look Jewish”.
but its best to simply prepare yourself to be asked these questions. and have a few stock answers.
most people, once they ask “are you Muslim” and you say “hmm? oh, no. Catholic,…”(smile) just drop the subject

i wear some wrap styles i learned form the jewish site www.tznius.com but you may also wish to look at these sites:
hijabtrendz.com/ (links, and video)
www.wegdan.com (some not so traditional Muslim wraps, inlcluding many that look very “hat” like)
and if you want more scarves and traditionally Muslim looks
veiledbydesign.com/product_info.php?products_id=3056
but their sets are FABULOUS! with pins !

now biblically? well i am sure some other folks already pointed out stuff, but the “women should cover their hair for it is a glory of them” etc … basically it is to be seen only by “intimates”

Hello,
My husband is completely supportive of my covering at Mass and during prayer. He doesn’t really understand why I would want to “clean house” or grocery shop covered. He thinks that’s where it gets a bit extreame. I’m sure you’all
know we can get alot of prayer done scrubbing the tub! That’s the area where we don’t connect. I honestly think he’d be alittle embarrassed to be seen with me!
I just love the “Rosary Quote”, makes my heart fill with joy!
I think I would be wise to follow your suggestion to have some “stock” answers ready! I don’t think-on-my-feet so great!

Well it can always be tried on a trial basis, you know? I think that’s how most women who cover full-time started. First at Mass, then at Mass and praying at home, etc. Maybe you could ask your husband if he would mind if you tried it for a week. Then you can go from there.

(Full disclosure: I cover my head at Mass and I don’t cover full-time outside of Mass (yet), but I think it’s awesome and I’m 100% supportive of women who are called to. :))

Hello,
Thank you for another great common sense suggestion. I feel confident that trying it for a week is a great compromise! I guess you can tell I tend to jump in with both feet.
God Bless you and your wonderful practical mind!
:blessyou:🙂

I have seen a Catholic family that dresses very conservative and the women and girls cover and wear long skirts. During the day they wear scarves tied back under their hair …sometimes snoods as well. But for Mass they change to a lace chapel veil or mantilla. There is really nothing to distinguish them apart from other Christian groups that cover and dress conservative.

This is such a lovely thread 🙂 I am considering wearing one - come to think of it, I saw a lady wear one when I went to my first Mass yesterday.

You went to your first Mass yesterday??? Wow! How was it?

This past Sunday, I wore a black, heavy knit square scarf. I folded it into a triangle, clipped it on top of my head and pulled one side across my neck and pinned it. It was loose and my hair stuck out just a little, but it was #1, warm 😉 and #2, just a nice feeling … I enjoy head covering at Mass. It really does make me focus.

I tried to post this in my other post but wasn’t in time. But I really enjoy this site…it has lots of cool scarves and snoods for everyday. SnoodsNY.com

many blessings to you on your first Mass!
many of the ladies at my church wear some kind of headcovering. it ranges, there are a few of the traditionalists with Mantillas… but many many more with snoods, hats, shawls, some sort of knit cap, or a dressy hat
in fact, if you didnt specifically think “women+ hat of some kind” you probably wouldnt notice…

Hello,
I would love to have that covering and dress wearing family feeling. My husband is completely supportive, in Mass, of both - but my daughter, who is 14 yrs old - is really feeling peer pressure. Last summer we were dress and cover girls but now we have no cover and she tries to get away with jeans to mass. We’re taking the jeans, there’s just no redeaming value, and I’m going to try and reintroduce the veil. It makes such a difference in her ability to focus during Mass. Any teenager suggestions would be MOST welcome!

Thank you 🙂 I loved it yesterday, I really have to learn the prayers properly - I only know the one liners.

I have a feeling I would see more ladies wearing head wear in the Cathedral.

its been… almost two years now for me, and i still stumble over some things… partly its a question of parts of the Catholic liturgy are almost, but not quite, the same as the Episcopalian, where i grew up.

there are books that go thru the Mass one part at a time… but the “short form” will also be in a small magazine called Magnificat. its about 5-6 dollars? anyway you can get it mail order or at any reasonably sized Catholic Store . it helps

and in the Cathedral? maybe… it depends on how “out of the way” the Cathedral is for most of your area Catholics. if its a “local church” well. you might not! but people tend to think about the clothes more if its out of the way you know, a “special trip” or something.

of course, its been mostly the “sandwich generations” in my church that do headcoverings, the older parishoners… elderly ladies who probably remember the Latin form… and the younger crowd.
 it can be a bit of a shock to see a group of kids, dred locked and big ear piercings and all…and the girls in hats or scarves, and the boys all taking their caps off properly…
of course its those same young men, even the ones with the nose rings and tattoos, that are staying all thru service and not dashing off as soon as the Eucharist is done.

it sadly seems to be my generation (middle group) that has the worst habits.

I’m so happy to see this topic. The first time I put on a mantilla, I didn’t want to take it off - ever! 😃

Good for you for taking a stand re: wearing jjeans to Mass! I think I would have done the same thing if I had a teenager. As far as the headcovering…One thing you could try to do is to get her involved maybe so she’ll be more interested? For instance let her pick out the covering, or tell her you’ll buy her a new one online so you want her to pick one she really likes…If she resists you can bring it up like we discussed earlier, on a “trial basis”…Or you could phrase it like she’s doing you a favor: this is something very important for *you *to do and it’d be a great help and support if she would wear hers too in solidarity.

(Now remember I don’t have any older kids yet so those are just a couple of ideas off the top of my head…)
This thread is making me want to wear handcovering now ^^
I say go for it! 👍

Hello!
For someone with no children yet:) You are very on target with how she might think! Once again I embrace your “trial basis” and small step philosophy. Thank you so much!
