I really like LaVey’s work - I’ve read every book - some several times. We used to get the Black Flames too, but after he died and Blanche had to move, things went into flux.
I’m kind of in the middle of you and Imryl. I’ve always believed in the supernatural, so I guess I don’t qualify as an athiest. I belive there are powers out there, but I don’t believe in one supreme personal type “GOD”, which rules out belief in the Judeo/Christian Satan as well. I’m very pragmatic, which I think most Satanists, as well as most occult/left-hand path based believers/practitioners, are. If something makes my life better for me, it gets my vote. I’m interested in demonolatry as well.
Names can be powerful, which is why LaVey chose Satan. These entities/energies have various names in various cultures and times. I know that some some left-hand path folks, after a time, generally find that naming the entity/demon/whatever they work with is not always necessary; it is really various energies that are tapped into and the names used for it are our own concoctions and conveniences.
As for motivation for good deeds, after much thought I have concluded that we all do things that benefit us. I sometimes give money to homeless folks. It makes me feel good. I do social justice work - I find it fulfulling. See where I’m going with this? Generally speaking, Christians do good deed because they feel God wants them to and/or because they believe they will be rewarded sooner or later. So there is a benefit - a selfish benefit, if you will, to these acts of good will. I’m not trying to be ugly here, but I think if one is honest with oneself and honestly examines their motivations the bottom line will be that we get something out of it - even if it just makes us smile. There’s nothing wrong with that at all - it’s human nature. I just think that with most religions it is the carrot and stick approach. At least that’s how it was for me (ex-Christian). Hey, at least I can see things from several points of view based on experience.
LaVey was a big animal lover and that’s another thing I agree with him on. I might be something of a misanthrope myself.
