:nunchuk:** I don’t appreciate you talking about our brothers in Christ that way.**

Ok then, just to be fair, let’s let all our good Catholic men cease all courtesies and considerations towards women’s sensitivities. No more gentlemanly door holding and they can dangle chocolate in front of us all day if they want (and that’s just the tip of the iceberg)! Maybe you, Walking_Home, just haven’t met enough good, holy, pure men who are truly trying to live as God has destined, who honor the Blessed Mother with all their hearts, and who respect women as daughters of God and princesses of Heaven.

We, Christian ladies, are merely trying to spare them from the temptation that they will still have to face in the world, so that we can instead be a help to them. We should lift them up by the way we dress, in the same way that a holy man’s actions, even something as simple as opening a door for her, can lift up a girl. Don’t you get it! :banghead: We aren’t trying to “coddle” their “weakness”. We are their inspiration to fight that weakness! When a man sees a beautiful, fully covered women, he can look at her for her mind, her imagination and her soul as well as her beauty. He should look at her as something of great worth. Then, when he sees a girl dressed not so modestly, he should recognize that she to has great worth, but has chosen not to show it, and he will respect her and guard his purity by looking away!

We must, must, must remember that feminine beauty is meant to reflect the beauty of God, but we cannot do that if we dress in a way that is tempting, not genuinely good and beautiful. I do believe that the body is beautiful, but the soul comes first. It should be what we are most concerned about, and what men notice most about us. Also though, because the body is beautiful, it is all the more reason that it should be hidden at times.

I pray that no boy would ever have to look away from me for the sake of purity! EVER

And take a look at this lady, :nun2: I think she is beautiful, full coverage and all! Girls’ bodies are tabernacles of the Holy Spirit. We need to veil those tabernacles properly and beautifully.

But for the OP, this is the best resource for finding sources for modest clothing. rosamysticamodesty.org
Go to resources and order the Young Woman’s Modesty Resource Guide (and it only cost $3!).

False charity is not a virtue. These boys/young men/men need to hear and learn the truth. That they are responsible for their own thoughts— and any women who in any way or form—“coddles/anables” men to fall back on this “weakness”—is not doing them an favors.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I just want to say that after reading through ALL EIGHT pages of text:D, I am thrilled to see that this forum is exactly what it should be. A place where “striving Catholics” (meaning we are all burdened with Original Sin and know it but are doing our best to be Christians every day) can come together and discuss (albeit at times heatedly) a rather controversial issue in our Church.

Being someone who loves to argue (think Socrates not ‘you left the toilet seat up again’)
I really enjoy seeing the diversity of thoughts and emotions that can still be part of ONE BODY, The Church. It is very difficult to have these conversations outside the Church today, because there is no moral absolute, no yardstick we can point to. Thank GOD we have the Magisterium of the Church and each other.

That said, I did have a few of my own thoughts:
  1. Aside from the Fatima stories, who said Hell would be HOT. I am going to look elsewhere on the forum and if I don’t find a thread I’ll start one, should be FUN! I thought Hell was the pure Knowledge of God with the torment of knowing you will never be with Him for eternity.
  2. I would like to offer a hypothetical which may cool the water Nibenon has jumped into. Let us say for example that this fine, young, 16 yr old male, is a LIFEGUARD at his local pool. IF the girls were all clad in even the bathing suits that the “wild” girls wore in the 60s and 70s he could look them in the eye and have a nice conversation with them, but when they approach his tower and literally every bit of there body is exposed except their nipples and their VERY private areas, it is hard to focus. I know for myself it is hard to look someone in the eye when any body part is more exposed than I am comfortable with. Ever try to converse with a plumber working under your sink. You are like, ok I will talk to you from the living room…
  3. Maybe we should start another thread on this, I am new here so I don’t know how we link them: Modesty?? Clothing, or attitude? HOW one CARRIES him/herself is about 85% of the modesty thing, and I believe, much more than the natural beauty or weight issue. Some actresses, are not all that pretty but are incredibly elegant, and some modestly dressed women can be downright sluts.
  4. Last one, I promise 😉
This is Debra’s, not sure how to make quote automatically,
    "
Meanwhile we’ve got indigenous tribes whose women walk around completely topless and the men think absolutely nothing of it. It’s not an immodest thing in their culture.
When my sons (now 11 & 9) were living abroad (we got back in 2009) we hung out in the sea with women from 2 to 92 that were bare from the navel up. Many of the older ones would even grab the boys and pull them in for a big hug. Effectively sticking my boys’ noses between their breasts! Never did I have to talk to the boys about modesty or focusing on a woman’s face when she looked at you. Back here in the U.S., I do.

Women DO dress provocatively ON PURPOSE and this is the problem. I am sure Debra looks beautiful in her shorts and tanks and her carriage is appropriate for her age, station in life, and gender. I am guessing Nibenon, or my sons could walk right up to her and talk to her without one thought of what she was wearing. But not all women are of her sensibility. Many are just clueless, or worse.

The great need here is to educate about how our dress and deportment effect (or should that be affect?) the men, both young and old around us. I recently went to a funeral in Southern California, in August. There were 6 granddaughters of the deceased in the third row on the left. All blonde, All beautiful. The problem was when they got dressed that morning, they were only thinking, “What will feel good in this heat and look nice for the funeral?” NOT, “What am I going to look like from behind when sitting in a church pew.”
Every single person (male and female) had one thought on their minds when they walked into that church. Oh MY Gosh there are six naked blondes in the third pew!

They had long blond hair and were all wearing halter dresses. With the part that goes around the neck being obscured by the hair, and the top of the back of the dress being lower than the pew, you could see NO clothing on them until they stood up and turned around.

The Bible verse “Do not hide your light under a basket” should mean we are all shedding Christ’s light on each other, not that we are exposing ourselves.

In case I failed - that last line was supposed to be humor :o
God Bless You All,
Your Sister in Christ,
KELLY

I have been to many non - Western nations.
I also looked at Coco Chanel’s website. From what I saw it seemed like the company is trying to make good clothes. So why are not more companies like that? That is my point.
And that is exactly what I’m talking about. I don’t have a problem with all the educated elite and western women, but there is a problem with them when they use their talents in a way that serves themselves and not God. Additionally, many fashions today are horrible, and I mean this in an artistic way, not in regard to modesty.

I have had years of classes in art. I love art. That is why I hate so much modern fashion, it lacks any beauty. You see, I’m not here just whining about modesty.

Why do you pray I realize people are all human…even lowly immodest women?
Do you know me? You don’t. I would love it if you prayed for me, and I thank you, but please consider praying for my soul’s salvation and for my own purity.
What I want is for people to realize who and what they really are. Creatures made in the image and likeness of God, to Love and Adore God for Eternity.
Only with this in mind can people began to understand how they are to conduct themselves.

God love you!
So I looked more and Coco Chanel and I changed my stance. She had a stupid philosophy. Some of the clothes is attractive and modest, but her philosophy, and perhaps many of her designs which could be immodest but I don’t want to take the time to “shop” right now, are based on a modernist philosophy. LAME!

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I can definitely say that I’ve personally met quite a few men like that. Good, Christian men striving to live chastely and who respect women as daughters of the Almighty God. My husband being one of them, as well as a couple of my best friends. I have NOT however, in person met any man who claims he cannot control his lust when he sees a girl wearing bottoms that go above the knees and a top that shows the shoulders. It is only on this website and/or through word of mouth that I hear of such individuals.

I agree with everything you said, and you said it beautifully! The one bone I have to pick here is your definition of what is and is not modest. Again, that is dependent on culture, and our culture doesn’t consider, for example, every article of clothing that goes above the knees, immodest. Heck, our culture doesn’t even consider it immodest to wear a bikini to the beach, given you have the right body type for it. A girl does not have to be “all covered up” for her to be modest. Not in this part of the world, not in 2011.

If a guy seriously cannot handle being around women wearing something that is decent in this day and age without lusting, then it’s time for him to search for the root of the problem by examining his own perversions… And it is his responsibility.

With that being said, I do believe that most good christian men who think they are lusting are actually just experiencing sexual/physical attraction and they cannot distinguish the difference between that and actual lust. So of course these poor men go crazy thinking they are commuting mortal sins, when they are simply just feeling physically attracted to a beautiful female - something completely natural and good. We are only feeding his confusion when we immediately assume and tell him that the woman must just not be dressed properly enough. Instead, we should knowledge/consider the fact that he may be confused and strive to help him find the line between right and wrong, sexual attraction and lust.
We must, must, must remember that feminine beauty is meant to reflect the beauty of God, but we cannot do that if we dress in a way that is tempting, not genuinely good and beautiful. True true. But when we go into extremes and try to convince others that they must do so as well, it just becomes out of line and doesn’t really help anyone. 👍

Our Lady of Fatima said this, “Certain fashions will be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much…those who serve God should not follow these fashions. Our Lord is always the same.”

I do believe we are supposed to follow God’s standards, not the culture’s.

As far as the definition of modesty goes, many popes and many saints have given their oppinions and some guidelines as to what is and isn’t modest. Some of them I have previously mentioned. Another one I have heard is that if you can’t imagine the Blessed Mother wearing it (assuming she lived now and not 2000 years ago) it isn’t modest.

The body is beautiful, but that does not mean you let everything show! Many things, such as precious gems, tabernacles and cloistered religious to name a few, are veiled and hidden, not because they are evil, but because of how beautiful and precious they are! They preserve purity and claim respect and reverence by being covered.

The fact that some things which were previously considered immodest are no longer thought of as so, says nothing about the clothes and everything about the attitude. Men and women alike have learned to “tune out” what people are wearing and just take even the most hideous outfits as normal (while girls in skirts and boys in collared shirts get a multitude of stares). Just because we are “desensitized” to the problem doesn’t mean that the problem does not exist or even that the desensitivity is good or healthy!

The fact is, God made you beautiful. If you dress the way HE wants you to I guarantee: you will lose nothing of your natural attractiveness and beauty, you will gain everything in dignity, goodness and the respect of men, and Christ will make both your body and soul more lovely than ever!👍

I’ve read her posts and honestly, I agree with her. I don’t see why you think she was somehow suggesting someone being almost naked just because she mentioned paintings in the Vatican churches.

From what I understand, she mentioned those paintings to prove a point. The point is our bodies are beautiful and don’t need to be covered up from head to foot every time we step out our front doors.

She never said anything about wearing REALLY short skirts, she just said mini skirts. That just means they’re above the knees, not necessarily showing the behind or anything. Mini skirts that are the right length look very classy and fashionable on the right body type. I wear them all the time here in sunny Florida. I’ve got pictures with my husband on my profile with me wearing mini skirts and tank tops and I definitely don’t think I look inappropriate or anything, I think I look nice.

Anyway, that’s what I got from what Kathleen was trying to say. I guess she can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty certain bc I feel the same way.
I assume that she is not actually talking about going around naked, as I assume that most people would not even think about going around in public naked. But note please that this is just an assumption, because she has not said anything about it. My whole point is that Kathleen does not give a lower limit of what is modest. She did not explicitly say that REALLY short skirts are ok, but that is the sort of thing teenage girls are actually wearing these days (and back in my day too). Dear friend, this is the very topic that we are discussing. I am not disagreeing with her, but that is because I have no idea what her point is.

I totally agree that some stuff out there is considered quite scandalous in this day and age. But not your basic pair of shorts and tank top on a proper body type where private parts aren’t shown.

God doesn’t have a set, universal standard of *clothing *modesty that applies to everyone everywhere. If this were the case, the Church would have very specific rules to follow on what is and is not allowed to be worn.

Instead, the catechism says this: "The forms taken by modesty vary from one culture to another. Everywhere, however, modesty exists as an intuition of the spiritual dignity proper to man. It is born with the awakening conscientiousness of being a subject. Teaching modesty to children and adolescents means awakening in them respect for the human person."

Yes, they have given their opinion (opinion being the key word) based on their culture and based on what was considered appropriate during their time. I’m sure a pope from the 1800’s would have a different opinion than one from the 1500’s and one from 21st century.

As for the Virgin Mary’s clothes…
I know she didn’t have a lot of money, so I doubt she wore really nice clothes or expensive clothes. I’m willing to guess she probably wore what was pretty standard for her time. I would have to conclude she’d do the same today.

I definitely agree with you, and of course, I most definitely DON’T let everything show. Neither do I think anyone should. I oppose pornography in everyway and am a big advocate on saving sex for marriage. There are certain parts of a person that should not be shown until the wedding night. I just don’t think the cutoff point should be upper arms and knees, that’s all. Sure, knees and upper arms were considered indecent at some point, but shoot, so were ankles. They are not considered indecent anymore. The truth is, times change, and with that, so does modesty of dress.

Well then, see for yourself. Would you still say women have to dress like this?

Because anything less than that was immodest at one point in time. If it doesn’t change, then shouldn’t you think we should all still dress like that?

I’m sure you are a beautiful person as well.
I think I’ve done quite a good job in that department (receiving respect from men), and I am so blessed to have had the wisdom to pick out such a great man to marry and such great male friends to surround myself with. I dress in the way that our culture considers appropriate, and I don’t have a single reason to believe that God would have any complaints in the way I dress.

Pardon me, but I am not 2000 years old. My struggle with this topic is barely 14 years old.

Your welcome Debora123, and thank you too! 🙂

Pretty much everything you just said is well founded and reasonable. However, I am a firm, firm believer that our culture could have (and does have in some circles) its own styles of clothing which are pretty, modest, complimenting to the feminine figure without accentuating it, feminine, preserve mystery and that the Blessed Virgin would want to wear and would like to see her daughters wearing.

By the way, I have a very beloved friend, a wonderful Catholic, who reminds me of you a bit. She also loves her tank-tops and shorts and we have been having the same debate with her for a while now. 😉

True, true… and ya can’t always please everyone, right? 🙂

The thing that matters most is that we are both women of faith, striving to do what’s right in this world and we have respect for each other’s views.

God bless you too! :hug3:

I bolded the words I’m referring to below…

What does the right body type have to with modesty?

Also, would you wear a bra and panties to the beach?

I see the same problem with this articulation. The Church has certainly be teaching for 2000 years, but it has not been teaching me for 2000 years. As a man, I do take my responsibility to avoid lust seriously.

Now, I say this next part with… a degree of shame, because if I were better in control of my passions, this certainly would not be an issue for me. However, I can’t help but feel that many women in the 18 to 30 range actually try to incite lust in men. I lived in Ottawa, Canada for 4 years (2003-2007), and I will tell you that in the dead of winter, the girls still lined up out the doors of the nightclubs in their REALLY short skirts, shivering and waiting to get in the door. Can anyone truly claim that that style of dress is more comfortable? I thank God regularly for the gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The people that tell you your skirt is too short or your heels are too high, just can’t wear them because they do not have the figure for it.
I hadn’t realized it before, but this is vanity. (Unless you can justify high heels based on comfort.)

True --the Church has not been teaching you for 2000 yrs —but She has been teaching you for what ever length of time --you have been able to understand Her teachings. And like you — all young men/men should be taking responsibility to avoid lust seriously.

As to the girls – only God knows for sure what their motives are. Maybe they are just using current fashion–with no ill motives–and yes even in winter. We may wish to apply ill motives to them — but in the end --only God knows.

And yes–we need to thank God for our Church/Faith and Sacraments.

What does the right body type have to with modesty?
Because some articles of clothing can look decent on someone while not looking all too classy on someone else. We are all of different shapes and sizes, and we usually tend to dress accordingly.

For example: If I had bigger breasts, I probably wouldn’t be able to wear a lot of the shirts I wear, bc it would expose that which should be covered. But since mine are small enough, everything is covered up just as much as it should be, and it looks ok.

Same goes for length of skirts or shorts. I personally can get away with wearing mini skirts because I have very long, thin legs, and small “assets” if you will, and so wearing a mini skirt doesn’t expose anything that shouldn’t be exposed.

Do you have anything to say about all the other points I made? It seems odd that of my huge comment you took this one little detail without questioning the rest of it. I hope this means everything else at least makes sense to you and that you can see the bigger picture here. 🙂
Also, would you wear a bra and panties to the beach?
Nope.

Underwear isn’t considered appropriate to wear in public and I’d probably get a lot of weird stares from both men and women. A bikini however, IS considered appropriate to wear to places like the beach or the pool. Needless to say, I wear a bikini instead.

I hadn’t realized it before, but this is vanity. (Unless you can justify high heels based on comfort.)
No it’s not. VANITY, in the Catholic definition, is more of a selfish, arrogant thing. It involves thinking you’re more wonderful and important than anyone else, and it means putting appearances above everything else in life to a point where it causes harm in one way or another.

Wearing high heels to look attractive, is not vanity, and is not a sin.
Vanity, or vainglory, is an inordinate desire to manifest one’s own excellence. It differs from pride, which is the uncontrolled esrie for self-esteem, in that vanity primarily seeks to show others what a person has or has achieved. A vain person looks for praise from others and may go to great lengths to obtain it. More commonly, vanity is associated with an exaggerated importance attached to multiple details, especially external appearances, which in no way contain the value attributed to them.

My goodness now you are being vain. Isn’t that a sin in your book? BTW some people are so-called properly covered because they have a lot to cover-up inside and out!
Please, I would like to ask that you make your point respectfully.

No one’s body needs to be covered more or less than anyone else. We all have the same dignity, physically and spiritually.

I am a fairly regular Catholic teenage girl. I enjoy going out and looking for clothes, at least, when I can find something modest enough. Recently, I have been trying to find a website or a store where I can get modest clothes. I have had some luck, but most of the things I have found seem more like things that my mother would wear.🤷 Does anyone know of a store/website where I can find clothing that is modest, but fits with my age a bit more? Any help is most appreciated! 🙂
I would just point out that if you are a typical teenage girl, who interacts with typical teenage boys; you would be getting a certain amount of attention covered head to toe in a potato sack. I know some girls dress a bit wild at that age. But don’t think that just because people notice you that you are being immodest.

NOT THE POTATO SACK THING AGAIN!!!:banghead:
Modest clothing does NOT have to look like a potato sack! Actually, modest clothing tends to be more feminine, flowing, graceful and beautiful than immodest clothing. MANY men have stated that they find modest clothing very attractive in a pure way. Shannon, please don’t be discouraged, you will not look like you are wearing a potato sack if you dress modestly! On the contrary, you will look all the more beautiful!
I am a Catholic teen too, I’ve had some luck at mainstream stores such as Marshalls and Kohls, you just have to look a lot.🙂
