We are all called to put Jesus first. Going to Mass every Sunday and holy day is EXTREMELY important. But sometimes we can put Jesus first by caring for the least of these. If by going to this Mass you push your wife farther away from the church, if it causes her to be more hostile to the church what is gained? Add that to the danger of gong outside a compound alone on an island I think you have a strong case for having a valid excuse to miss Mass.

Let’s not get too pharisaical, folks. The Sabbath was made for man not the other way around.

Ask your priest. They’ve studied long and hard to know these things. Got whole degrees and all.

I think you should be able to get a dispensation considering the travel advisory and that you would need to go alone etc. in the future I would look up mass times before even booking a vacation, and then making sure a meal or whatever isn’t scheduled for that time. In the age of the internet there’s really no reason to not be able to figure that out in advance, and end up with a dinner scheduled at the same time. I will say a prayer for you and your wife, that she can heal and her heart will soften toward the Lord’s Church.

Have no fear. We are in currently in compliance with the rules of the Church (not withstanding my wife no longer practicing the faith) and we have a sound relationship with each other. We have survived the trials I wrote about because we care for each other and try our best to understand each other’s positions. Thank you everyone for your efforts to help us in our struggles.
