Hey, is there anybody here at CAF, who believes that Jesus Christ had biological brothers and can you prove it?

Concerning the identities of James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas, please see my reply #543 in the thread: Re The Perpetual Virginity of Mary - an offshoot…Apologetics Forum. Hopefully you’ll see how the names match up. The lists of the Apostles should be sufficient when it comes to names. Going beyond these lists leads to “straining the text”.

It is uncertain who Salome is. Some scholars think that it’s probable she is the mother of the sons of Zebedee, while others have inferred she is a sister of Mary. But she is not the sister of James the less, Joseph (Joses), Simon, and Judas (Jude).

I apologize and stand corrected with regard to Josephus. I had Acts in mind. The historian is referring to the execution of James the less (the Just) in A.D. 62. The son of Alphaeus was not a uterine brother of Jesus. So the term “brother” should mean “cousin.” Please cite your source about this supposed dispute between Origen and Josephus.

My entire position is grounded on Scripture and Sacred Tradition, not hearsay. These two mediums of divine revelation must not be divorced from each other. Eusebius’ account does not reflect a traditional awareness of the Church with regard to Jude (Judas/Thaddeus). He simply reports what an annonymous group of people have to say. Moreover, he fails to mention who these people are and provide actual quotes. The apostle Jude was a brother of James the less (the Just) and a cousin of Jesus, the author of the epistle in his name. The Letter of Jude was read in the liturgy of the Mass before the canon of Scripture, for the Church accepted it as the work of an apostle of Jesus.

You’re mistaken about the Church Fathers with regard to the scriptural Mary. Hyppolytus is the first to call Mary the Ark in keeping with a tradition acknowledged by Luke, who clearly draws a parallel between Mary and the ark of the Old Covenant by referring to the Book of Samuel. Anyway, all Church doctrines have developed over a period of time. Christ established his Church to last until the end of the age, not until the end of the 2nd century. And all our Marian doctrines are based on what has been revealed implicitly in Scripture. The Church is “the pillar and foundation of truth”, Paul tells Timothy. Still Ignatius, Polycarp, and Justin Martyr taught much more than what we have left in a few written letters and extant fragments. Paul never wrote about the virgin birth, or the ontological deity of the Holy Spirit, but I’m sure he mentioned it when he preached; although Arian Catholics and Unitarians would disagree. Churches had already been erected in honour of Mary in the Apostolic Era. James, the son of Zebedee, for instance, erected one in Spain before he returned to Jerusalem. Today this church still draws many pilgrims each year.

The Marian teachings of the Church Fathers have been consistent through the centuries, with the exception of Tertullian, who significantly denied Mary’s ‘virginitus in partem’. No Church Father has objected to the teaching of Mary as the New Eve and Mother of God, but rather articulated these teachings even further. No Church Father objected Mary was sinless. Origen merely believed Mary had personal faults like vanity and doubt. The consistent and developed teachings on Mary’s sinlessness through the centuries by the Fathers of the East and West led to the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. Finally, once the Church Fathers explicitly taught the Assumption in the 6th century (the feast was already celebrated in Palestine by the 4th century), only one lone bishop objected to this teaching in the 8th century, but it was not yet dogmatic. May I suggest you read Luigi Gambero’s book on Mary and the Church Fathers. You are obviously misinformed.

Mary does “inhabit an important role in the economy of salvation”, unless you consider the birth of Jesus unimportant. If not for her Divine maternity, the apostles would never have been called. Maybe you should stick to law and forget about theology. 😛

SS got a question for you, Now you said No one should engage in intercessory prayer to anyone except Christ right? Now question would you agree that Mary was at least AS righteous as Job?
I don’t know (both were sinners and their righteousness was given by grace – so the premise of the question is fallacious). The fact is many of the typologies conflated with Mary are actually Christological in nature; one example being the Ark typology.

I believe it was actually imperative for Jesus to have siblings and a household (in order that they may reject Him):

*"He has removed my brothers far from me,
And my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.
"My relatives have failed,
And my intimate friends have forgotten me.
"Those who live in my house and my maids consider me a stranger.
I am a foreigner in their sight (Job 19:13-15).

I have become estranged from my brothers
And an alien to my mother’s sons (Psalm 69:8).*

These passages of course speak of Job and David – however, they are also indicative of things to come concerning Christ, for instance:

*And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things (Luke 23:49).

For not even His brothers were believing in Him (John 7:5).

And He said, "Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown (Luke 4:24).*
Okay then If Jesus said to Jobs friends I will not listen to your prayer because you are not righteous but i will listen to Job.
Okay now, i am not righteous i will tell you that right now, I am not worthy of Gods forgiveness, but the Blessed Mother is, that I can be sure of, Now if Job could pray his children into heaven, (remember at the beginning jobs kids were bad) Now you know Job still loved his kids, and God said i will give Job what he asks for he is righteous, would that not be intercession.
You’re juxtaposing the role of Mary with the role of Jesus. When we trace the nexus between Ezekiel 43 & 44 with the discourse describing Jesus as our high priest in Hebrews 7, we learn the reason why Jesus was able to offer a perfect sacrifice for our sins was because He was sinless.

So what you speak of Mary only applies to Jesus. Mary need a Savior (as she herself proclaimed) – hence she was no more worthy than others in Israel. Nothing she did merited the grace God bestowed upon Her.

Mary represented Israel. The Israelites were chosen as the womb from which Jesus would be born. God built Israel as a potter builds His clay – for the very purpose of Christ. It is Jesus who is the Ark – not Mary.

There were various reasons why Mary and Joseph were chosen by God as Jesus’ parents. The obvious is that Mary was from the Davidic blood line (as was Joseph). However, another reason is that Joseph, though from the Davidic line, was the descendant of Jehoiakim (previously named Eliakim). Jehoiakim burned a scroll written by the prophet Jeremiah and God said to Jehoiakim that none of his descendants would ever inherit the throne of David.

Hence, while Joseph was able to pass legal title he could not pass blood title (because of the curse of Jehoiakim). Similarly Mary was able to pass blood title (because she was also from the Davidic line) but not legal title (since she was a woman).

The RCC acts as if the incarnation of Jesus by the Holy Spirit had something to do with Mary? She was the bondservant of God (as she describes herself), not His queen. Mary was the spouse of Joseph, not of the Holy Spirit. There is “one” mediator between God and man, not two (or thousands if we include the Saints).
Now if I go to the Blessed Mother and ask her to pray for me how can that be disobeying God? Or to replace God. I never said she had the power to be God, I am saying she will be heard. And her prayers will be heard, and can help me.
I’m not sure if poor theology will anger God.
Now how can I ask you to pray for me or you ask me be hurting God.
This is a common red herring – asking a fellow Christian to pray for us is not the same as intercessory prayer to Saints or venerating Mary. We cannot say or know who will ascend to heaven. While I am confident Mary and the Apostles were saved – it’s worth noting that no such knowledge exists with regard to other Saints. The assumption that the RCC can know that their Saints are saved is wrought from the erroneous premise that they were given exclusive authority by Peter (so they believe they were given the authority to “bind and loose”).
The only difference is our prayer could and may be heard of death ears. Remember God said of Jobs friends I WILL NOT LISTEN TO THEIR PRAYERS. Now how can we say we are righteous. we cant. But we know the Blessed Mother is. Blessed are you among women. So how can God leaving her here for us, hurt us.
I don’t even know where the typology between Job and Mary could have come from?
I read this somewhere about the Blessed Mother
When a child is scared or in need they will run to their Mother.
When a child is in danger the Mother will run toward the child.
What did the Blessed Mother do, she told them kids to pray, and ask God to help us.
We were all created in God’s image – man and woman; and all are the same to God, male and female alike, this is why there is no need for a maternal figure or a New Eve.

I’ve already shown the “cousin” theory is fallacious (see link here); but as I said this is not an issue Catholics and most Protestants will ever agree on. At the same token I guess I’m always compelled to challenge what I view as poor theology. 🙂

The Catholic arguments against what Scripture truly depicts as the biological brothers and sisters of Christ are flimsy and wrong and they know it. They claim that there wasn’t words in the original text to differentiate between brother and kin of another relation? Baloney. Then they claim that these could be half brothers and sisters. Truth is, what Scripture surely and truly says does not fit what the Catholic church professes and teaches about Jesus and Mary. Nothing anywhere in the Scriptures lends itself to Mary and Joseph not having a normal marriage.

“Flimsy & wrong”, yes, but not known to be.

There are arguments that can be made for it, but some of the Gospel texts lose some of their point if the brethren of the Lord were not his full - i.e. uterine - brothers. The emphasis on Him at certain points - as in the Nativity narratives - is sufficiently accounted for by the fact that He, & none of His siblings, is the central character. The Gospel is about Jesus, not about His brothers James or Jude or Joses; just as it is not about his mother or St. Joseph.

If one believes what Matthew 13:55 tells us about Jesus’ four brothers, then one has to believe what the same text tells us about Jesus’ father: the carpenter.

Compare a direct assertion, & a quotation of that assertion.

“Is not this the son of the carpenter ?” is a quotation of a question about who Jesus was thought to be - what the Evangelist thinks the answer is, or in what sense (if any) the judgement in the question is true, we are not told.

So that episode does not tell us anything about whether Jesus is the son of the carpenter: for all that the questioners know, Jesus could be
  • the begotten son of Joseph
  • his adopted son
  • an angelic being
  • or anything at all
The last thing the question does is inform us about his family arrangements - in which Matthw may have had not the slightest interest anyway. We do, so we can’t imagine he did not. The verse “tells us” nothing - it’s probably not meant to; it’s probably meant more as a stimulus to get us wondering, thinking, so that we react to it, either in faith or not.

Frankly, I think brother, step-brothers, or cousins will not be conclusively proven (notwithstanding the natural reading of the text states brothers – since there is a slight possibility brother can mean cousin, this argument for all intents and purposes is barking in the wind). Thankfully, however, God gives us another clue

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.

Mark 6:3

With regard to Sister – it cannot mean cousin. Here’s the Strongs:

Strong’s Number: 79
Original Word: a)delfh/
Translated Word: Adelphe
Noun Feminine

Definition:
  1. a full, own sister
  2. one connected by the tie of the Christian religion
Now you are left arguing that these “sisters” were “connected by the tie of the Christian religion” – when the text of the passage states: And they took offense at Him.

Hence Jesus either had natural sisters or step-sisters. So either Mary bore children after Jesus or Joseph brought children into the marriage.

I can’t wait to hear the gymnastics on this one 🙂
May I strongly suggest that you read Mark 6:3 again? The ones who took offense at Jesus are the people who asked the questions, not the brothers and sisters. 😉

These sisters are female disciples and followers of Christ. :yup:

Now concerning love of the brothers and sisters, you do not need anyone write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another.
1 Thessalonians 4:9

Honestly, it doesn’t take “mental gymnastics” to reply to your posts. 😉

I agree that they are unbelieving relatives from His hometown. However, the part I dont’ understand is why you agree with the unbelievers? They assume that Jesus is “the carpenter’s son”, yet we know this is not the case - adopted, but not blood.

I do not say that they are “blood” sisters – they could be the daughters of Joseph from a previous marriage (which would align with the Orthodox teaching that Joseph was an old widower before marrying Mary).

However, the argument that these are either sisters (in the sense of fellow Christians) or “cousins” is unavailable here. The Greek word for sister does not have an alternate meaning as either cousin or other type of relative.

No, you don’t get it. The ones who have taken offense here are the ones who disbelieve what Jesus has been teaching, since they presume he is just an ordinary person like themselves: hence, the questions. These people who are objecting to Jesus’ teachings live with him in his home town among our Lord’s relatives: male and female kin who are also our Lord’s followers. Why would the brothers and the sisters take offense at Jesus after the questions were asked? What could they be taking offense at? They aren’t the ones who are doubting our Lord’s credibilty by asking these questions. Jesus is not saying he has been rejected by his relatives, but by his neighbours who live in the same town with him and his relatives. Jesus is telling them that he has been rejected where he lives among his relatives. Living among relatives is not the same thing as being rejected by them. His “own house” stands for Israel. There’s nothing further to explain. Adelphe means female relatives and “followers” of Jesus, who could include Salome.

By the way, I’m not American; so you could earn an extra gold medal for the USA in the next olympics. 😉

Both some of Jesus’ townspeople and relatives were offended by our Lord’s teachings. But in Mark 6 it’s the townspeople who take offense at him. Yet here Jesus is probably alluding to those relatives of his who at some early point in his ministry tried to sieze him.

He came home. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”
Mark 3, 20-21

In Mark 6:4 Jesus is comparing himself with the prophets whom the people of Israel rejected in view of the dishonour shown him by his own townspeople and relatives. These relatives in 3: 21 are not the brothers and sisters we have in 6:3. If it were the case, for your alleged fulfillment of the prophecies, then these same brothers and sisters would have been literally mentioned in chapter 3. The relatives who rejected the words of our Lord were neither his siblings nor his male and female relations who followed him. Adelphe may refer to either a sister, sister-in-law-, niece, or female cousin among kinfolk - as well as female disciple in ‘Semitic usage’.

I agree, however, I do think there were some relatives that were neither siblings, nor disciples. It is these who did not believe in Him (although some of them came to believe later) and tried to sieze Him. It may be these that came to him with his mother while He was teaching, wanting to see Him. What did they do with crazy people? Hide them in the desert?

Good point! 👍

Mary’s tomb is empty, as is Christ’s unkown tomb. There are no known tombs of any siblings of Jesus.

Now the tomb of St. Joseph remains a mystery, but according to traditional beliefs it is somewhere in the Valley of Josaphat where Mary’s tomb is, or near the Garden of Gethsemane. There are no traditional accounts of the whereabouts of any tombs of Jesus’ uterine siblings in the Church. Jesus had no biological brothers and sisters.

I’d still like to know why 1600 years worth of Christian teaching (unified Christian teaching) by people using the very same Scripture that we possess today resulted in people believing in Mary’s perpetual Virginity (i.e., no 'blood brothers and sisters of Jesus), yet only recently, taught by ‘men’, has there come about a false teaching that “brother” used in Scripture about Jesus has to mean ‘uterine brother’.

Further, using again that same Scripture we possess today, the teaching of Christianity in John 6 and elsewhere was that Jesus tells us to (literally) eat His flesh and drink His blood in order to have life within us.

And the same ‘men’ who insist that “brother” means “UTERINE BROTHER AND NOTHING ELSE” in the one case, suddenly do a 180 in the second case as well and say, “Jesus’ words in John 6 where he tells us to eat His flesh and drink His blood are only SYMBOLIC”.

In both cases, ‘men’ have changed consistent and unified Christian teaching to reflect the exact opposite of what Christianity taught (and still teaches in the Catholic Church).

In the first case, they changed the meaning of a word to make it ‘narrower’ (and ignore as well the clear Scriptural evidence that proves that those men named as ‘brothers’ were not children of the Virgin Mary and therefore never were, nor could be, ‘uterine brothers’.

In the second case, they changed the meaning of the words to make them ‘symbolic’’ instead of literal. Of course, the net result of that, in making the Eucharist symbolic, was to ‘negate’ the use of a priest who alone can consecrate the Eucharist --the “Real Presence’”. If it isn’t real, though, ‘anybody’ can preside over a symbol. This teaching was deliberately introduced to foster anticlericalism.

In both cases, they are denying the Christianity that the apostles taught and that the world followed for 1600 years ‘unified’ and still (in the Catholic Church) follows today.

Why is that, do you think?

Answer :Some final notes on Sola Scriptura from its inventor and the founder of Protestantism…
Martin Luther looked around and saw the damage that Sola Scriptura and ‘private interpretation’ of Holy Scripture was doing to his ‘reformation’, and made the following remarks…
“This one will not hear of Baptism, and that one denies the sacrament, another puts a world between this and the last day: some teach that Christ is not God, some say this, some say that: there are as many sects and creeds as there are heads. No yokel is so rude but when he has dreams and fancies, he thinks himself inspired by the Holy Ghost and must be a prophet” De Wette III, 61. quoted in O’Hare, THE FACTS ABOUT LUTHER, 208.

So are you saying Jesus’ siblings (or cousins) didn’t reject Him?

For even his own brothers did not believe in him (John 7:5).

Whomever these “brothers” were they could not have been brothers in the fellow Christian brethren sense. So I’m not sure what you’re basing your line of reasoning on?

Jesus was rejected by His family (accept His mother). Indeed this is even important for Catholic typology (and the queen mother nexus). For instance David suffered a similar sort of rejection (by even his own uterine brothers) & his mother was the only one who stood by him.

The office of the Queen Mother is not a “nexus”. The King is the nexus. Her office derives completely from His. She has no “office” apart from Him.

John 7:5 is merely more evidence of my earlier point.

*Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him.

Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” (Mark 6:3-4).*

The idea that sisters in this context means fellow Christians (in a feminine context) seems flawed.

There is a general rejection of Jesus by not only the Nazarenes but also by those within His own household – by His own family.

Jesus stated in response to their rejection that “only in his hometown, among his relatives is a prophet without honor.” This illuminates the meaning of the preceding verse (see also the parallel at Matt. 13:54-58). While obviously the statement Jesus responds to is made by one of the men in the crowd He is addressing, the sisters here are sisters in the familial context, not fellow Christians.

Indeed Roman Catholicism is the only major religion that chooses to dispute this fact. The Eastern Orthodox Catholics will at least say that Jesus had siblings – although they will say they were children of Joseph from a previous marriage (based on the account in the Proteevangelium of James).

I’m really not sure what to say of the Protoevangelium of James? I have read the document & I did see a few problems with it (just on a cursory reading). For instance it has Jesus being born in a cave rather than a manger or nativity. Moreover, it’s purported authorship has been debunked (apparently it was thought that James the Just authored the piece, however, upon further examination this has been deemed impossible). Indeed the author purports to be James of Jerusalem, which is also unlikely since the Old Testament references are take from the Septuagint and not from the Mosaic Old Testament.

Nothing besides the virgin birth of Jesus Himself is recorded by any Apostle or Apostolic Father (Ignatius, Clement, or Polycarp). I repeat the reasonings behind my disagreement with the RCC (and Eastern Orthodox) view.

I do acknowledge that these stories concerning Mary were circulating very early. However, that lends little to their veracity.
