Hillary Clinton leaves flowers for Our Lady of Guadalupe, asks ‘Who painted it?’

As a non Catholic, I wouldn’t expect her to know the history. As a politician, she should have done her homework .

Heck, lots of Cathlolics probably don’t know the history.

Nope it was a bracelt with the Madonna on it…I think its tacky to wear religious jewelry to be fashionable…Of course she might have been hoping to get Catholic votes…It was when she was running for president

Maybe she has a leaning toward Catholicism? Wouldn’t it be nice if she started in her office as pro choice but ended up, because of becoming Catholic, pro life?

This is just another example of the, “its okay to offend Christians” mentality in public life today. I’ll betcha if she went to a mosque during Ramadan her handlers would have done the research and briefed her to make sure she didn’t invite anyone out to lunch.

I believe that says volumes. Our Secretary of State has a very poor staff if they did not brief her on the importance of OL of Guadalupe and the tilma’s origins. And she is foolish if they tried to tell her and she did not listen.

Furthermore it is an insult to the Church that she went first to the Basilica “and laid flowers” prior to her attending a Planned Parnethood event where she was getting a Margaret Sanger award.

The incongruity of visiting our Lady’s shrine, a vision of the Blessed Virgin while she is carrying the Savior of the World, and then accepting an award from the World league of baby killers is disgraceful.:dts:

I certainly doubt she is leaning toward Catholicism. If she were she would have done some research of Guadalupe…I think she was leaning toward votes, or she liked the way the bracelet looked

So far everytime this woman is allowed out in public she has stuck her foot in her mouth and chewed it to the hip. I don’t think she has missed one chance to insult any host in any country yet.

She needs to at the very least fire her staff and hire some that will do her work for her.

The incongruity is quite striking and I was left shaking my head over it. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. While reading the article, our local organization “Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life” came to my mind. It is a pro-life group here in St. Louis (other cities have their own chapters too, I think) which pays to display billboards in Missouri showing the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe along with two or three babies and the message “Love your babies…born and unborn,” as well as the telephone number to a Catholic Charities agency here in St. Louis.

Hillary and her staff should have done their homework to find out more about the tilma and the history behind it. It probably would not have hurt for them to find out too that Our Lady of Guadalupe is also Patroness of the unborn and the Americas. Shame on them. Hillary should be embarrassed about this one. Wonder if she has the good grace to be so?

This is not the first such gaffe that the Obama state department has made – remember the incident with Great Britain a couple weeks ago?

Given her high support among American hispanics (before the primaries, she was the #1 choice of the hispanic community), it will be interesting to see if anyone here reacts.

This would be rather offensive to a certain segment of the Mexican population, although many Mexicans who have converted to Protestantism (or abandoned their religion) consider the tilma to be a fraud, especially in the over-educated class.

In some ways I admire the restraint of CNS here, but in other ways I am scratching my head over the use of the term noted.

I would have been sorely tempted to use infamous, or notorious. The noted just strikes an odd chord with me, somewhat like calling Charles Manson a noted psychopath, or December 7th, 1941 a noteworthy day in history.

While I am not a fan of hers, I recognize that she is ignorant of things Catholic. I look at this merely as an honest inquiry. I am sure she was stunned with the reply of the cardinal.

Almost all Mexicans are proud of their national symbol, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Protestants and Catholics alike refer to themselves as (male) Guadalupano or (female) Guadalupana. When I rode the public transit wearing a Lady of Guadalupe pin I was given a seat by a smiling Mexican who said, “Soy Guadalupano”.

I hope she didn’t ask him which God, now that would have been a real blunder.

Most Mexicans love Our Lady of Guadalupe, but the remember explosive growth of fundamentalist churches (both in Mexico and in Hispanic America) which treat the Virgin of Guadalupe as idol-worship. Also, don’t forget about the academics and the literary class which consider themselves too sophisticated for this (the most obvious case being Octavio Paz.)

I think the media is largely ignoring Clinton’s comments because many of its members find themselves in the latter class.

I do not want to be ah, intrusive here, but Protestants never give Apparitions a thought; Most of them, as they do not believe in the Pope’s authority nor their bishop’s, who approve the authenticity of all apparitions and what goes on after they have occurred, they eschew such authority, as they, the Protestants believe they are the Authority… and well what do you expect from years of brainwashing?

I laughed out loud and cut and pasted the article and sent it out.

Now I really feel sorry for her. But the Clintons, they bring it upon themselves.

Wouldn’t that be wonderful.
I was thinking her error would have provided a good opportunity to gift her with a book about the tilma. Embarrassment over the goof could turn out to be the one sure prod that would spur her to read about it.

Really, Hillary Clinton shouldn’t need to be prodded to learn these things, given that she seeks the support of the Hispanic community more than any other major politician. The Virgin of Guadalupe history is basic stuff which she should have learned long ago, unless her self-proclaimed devotion to Hispanics was just a cynical ploy to get votes in the Democratic primary.

Rest assured I am no fan of the Clintons, but everyone has an immortal soul that belongs to God. I really don’t have high expectations for Hillary regarding knowledge of our precious Catholic Faith, but I can hope for her conversion and salvation. We are coming upon some intense times in our world and we know Who the Victor is! If we are true to the test we should want everyone to be on the winning team - even though it may seem nearly impossible!
