First of all, I think pretty much everyone knows the typical hipster. They’re thin; they wear bright shoes and tight jeans, eat vegan, like the arts, shun the mainstream, have Ray Bans, glasses, and wear vintage clothing. However, we have never had a Catholic Answers stance on the hipsters. What does everyone on this board think of them? Is their lifestyle immoral? I’m mainly asking because my brother (who now goes by Sebastian, rather than his real name Michael) seems to be heavily invested in the hipster world, especially now that he is living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I’m a bit concerned that he is becoming too involved in this subculture as it at times seems a bit immoral. He also depends a great deal on our parents for monetary support of his lifestyle considering his sporadic work stints at the local record shop don’t really provide all that well. Thanks in advance from a concerned brother.

Yeah, I see those Williamsburg hipsters when I get on the L-train.

But from your description, I don’t see why being a hipster is necessarily immoral.

You can be a computer programmer hipster who makes a decent living. Was your brother doing well before he became more involved in the hipster lifestyle?

I guess that question is on par with the question of can someone be a Christian goth or a metal head. Some will say yes and some will say no.

Does “L-train” have anything to do with the Lilith Fair? I hear a lot of hipsters congregate to acoustic women.

Is he still a faithful Catholic? I think you can be vegan and wear the vintage clothes and still live a Catholic life style. Shunning main stream society might actually be quite helpful in living a Catholic life. Saint Anthony of Egypt was onto something.

Et Cetera, your three question marx remind me of a psyduck. these are something that all hipsters love (pokemon). i know a 23 year old MAN who wore his LITTLE BROTHER’S pokemon shirt. he was so skinny, it fit.

I don’t think my brother is still a serious Catholic. He lives with two girls (very pretty), and yeah…he’s slept with both of them. I know this because of the drama that ensued one weekend last year, but apparently they’ve resolved everything. I really thought that one of the girls (Lex) would end up leaving.

wait, lex miller?

@prost8 I’m still not sure what you’re talking about.
@Earnest Hahahah, so true!

uh ohhh :(… What happened between all of those young hipsters (boy && girls) ? Was their folly that they all got “too involved” or was it a scenario where there are only two seats on a tandem bicycle?

Well, I guess both of these young ladies had a thing for my brother, which I don’t always understand because he’s skinny as a rail and sleeps until 2 pm. Anyway, Lex the barista apparently was “with” my brother first and then Michelle (an American Apparel employee) moved in to save on her rent. And yeah, they wanted to have a “three person” relationship, but that didn’t work out for very long as jealousy got in the way.

Et Cetera, pride was the downfall of a very well-known angel (Lucifer) once, too…I hope your brother has not become so fallen.

Mexicanlad, why do you quote three well-known pagans? are you, too, a non-believer? (note, I mean Heraclitus, Ovid, Aristotle)

Who are you? No, that’s not her name. There are a ton of these people in Williamsburg.🤷
Oh, I was not sure. I am sorry
I only asked because I dated a girl named Lex Miller once, she was not as comfortable as I am with being so “new age” in our woman-woman lover for one another. I was asking because I assumed Lex was with Michelle and then your hipster brother came along. This would be bad news bears!!! LOL!:p:p:p

Haha, oh okay…that’s interesting. No, my brother and Lex were together first. But I think we’re getting a little off topic.

I am sorry. I will try to ask more questions about your hipster brother. Does he like Yu-Gi-Oh (no, not the local Japanese restaurant!!! LOL! :p)

The card game? I’m not too familiar with it, and I doubt that he is either. I’ve never heard him mention it, at any rate.
