I am guessing that many see no problem with the situation here.

foxnews.com/us/2012/03/01/mother-launches-facebook-campaign-against-teen-moving-in-with-former-teacher/?test=latestnews
A California school teacher has quit his job and left his wife and kids to move into an apartment with an 18-year-old student less than half his age.
The Modesto Bee says the teen’s mother, Tammie Powers, has waged a Facebook campaign against the teacher since her daughter moved out of the family’s home last week and into a Modesto apartment with 41-year-old James Hooker.

I will leave my opinion of what I think of a 17 year old being friends with a 12 year old and just comment on what my reaction as a parent would be.

I have three teeange boys with very different personalities.

My oldest is almost 19’years old. I would be fuming at the 24 year old girl. My son is sensitive and gives his heart to a girl completely and takes forever to let go of a girl. I would feel that the older woman took advantage of him. And would want the relationship to end. I would do what I could to convince my son that she is not the woman for him.

My 17 year old, I would not worry about. His friends and sports are way more important to him than any girl. He can not be controlled or manipulated. I have seen two girls try. Plus, he hates going on-line. He would quickly be bored with an on-line relationship.

My 16 year old, I also would not worry. He has a girlfriend but will still hang out with friends without her and plays sports year around. He does not let her take over her life. And he doesn’t trust easy so would not be easily manipulated or controlled by anyone.

So my reaction would depend on how much control she manage to get over my son.
I don’t think I had any control over him. He did what he wanted. And of the two of us, I would definitely say that I am the more sensitive one. I know that my motives and feelings were completely pure. If anybody would have been taking advantage of anybody, it would have been him of me. I just don’t know what to do or what to think.

Please provide a link to this poll. You know how I’m going to vote. I guess I don’t understand your objection because I had ‘friends’ who were much younger then me when I was 16 and 17. Often they were very troubled kids who needed SOMEONE in their life who was a little bit more mature.

Our friendships were usually mentor-type situations. Wherein they needed a mentor and I obliged. Not because there’s something wrong with me or because I wanted to take advantage but because I’ve always had a soft spot for people who are suffering - no matter their age.

Many schools have programs where they set older teens up with younger kids who need a ‘big brother’ or ‘big sister’. I’d wager those friendships turn into life long friendships in some cases without anything sinister ever going on.

The kind of relationship described in the OP could very well be this same situation where she was the big sister to his little brother. She clearly states she didn’t encourage his
romantic feelings and that she was there for him as he struggled through those awkward growing up years. What’s so terribly wrong with that?

I really think you’re putting people in a box and you shouldn’t be. And I will state that even if the OP had been a 17 year old boy being kind to a 12 year old girl I still wouldn’t have a big issue with that. There’s nothing wrong with kids being kind to each other and forming friendships despite large age gaps.
And how many of these teens you mentored did you fall in love with? How many did you communicate with behind their parent’s backs and in the full knowledge that their parents disapproved of you? Discuss having sex with (as in you wanting to have sex with them or vice versa)?

Dietrich Von Hildebrand married his wife Alice when he was rather old and she was quite young. No I don’t have a moral objection to people marrying those of a younger age.
She was 35 for cryin out loud - already an independent and mature woman - almost an over-the-hill age for those days. She wasn’t 19 and still dependent on her parents, much less TWELVE!

Was Alice a minor when they started dating? Or at least when he became interested in her? Did he communicate with her behind her father’s back? Of course not. The comparison is ridiculous.

The relationship mentioned in the OP, the boy was a minor, she is an adult. The relationship has been secret, kept from the father of the minor. When the father found out, he stopped the boy from contacting the OP. BUT the OP just won’t give up. She has to contact him, just one more time, because, you know “there are ways.” People have been accused of stalking for less.

OP

You certainly have raised a multitude of issues and opinions on this thread.

I believe you have come to the right conclusion. Move on with your life and your pursuit of spirituality. I would probably discourage “one last communication” as I can see you getting hurt even more. You would be totally putting yourself out there in this last letter. Naturally, you would want to know what he thought of your letter. No response would be heartbreaking. Any response would create additional problems for both of you. It seems like a Lose-Lose proposition.

I am sorry that your thread was hi-jacked with some very serious side issues. We all have our hot buttons and feel compelled to state our opinions. Unfortunately, your situation was caught in the cross-fire. I am also sorry if you feel you have been judged by any in this group.

God Bless you.

Welcome back to the thread! We weren’t even talking about the OP’s situation when I posted that. We were talking about a forty year old man who left his family for an 18 year old. I mentioned that I most certainly did object to the situation but that it is not inherently wrong to marry someone half your age and in fact Dietrich Von Hildebrand did so. As you point out she was thirty five at the time. He was 70, so clearly when it is a question merely whether it is acceptable to marry someone half your age my example was not only applicable, but is made more so by the information you supplied; i.e. that she was exactly half his age.

I understand that his father is upset about the idea of his son planning a relationship that will include adult relations someday, but it isn’t all me. There are two parties involved, it is a completely mutual thing and it isn’t as though I’m the first girl his son has ever been with- he’s a bit of a charmer.
First off, I do think that some people on this forum inappropriately use this forum to condemn people. They look for things that are wrong to condemn people they’ve never met and to jump to conclusions. For that I am sorry. They are not being authentic witnesses to the Catholic faith.

As i said before, none of what you’ve brought up seems to be about Catholicism except this point here. The point is sexual behavior of any kind outside of marriage is gravely immoral.

I think the other confusing part is that in some sense, a boyfriend is always just a friend till they become your spouse. Certainly there is a point where you develop mutual feelings, share those feelings and decide to exclusively see each other. However, most people on this forum will discourage anyone who is not at a stage in their life where they are ready to discern marriage as being in a situation where they should do this. Why? Because the only thing that can morally justify this behavior is to discern marriage. It is a way to look before you leap. I’d say its a way of keeping your heart on a leesh so that it doesn’t run out into the street and get hit by oncoming traffic. Its there to help you make a wise marriage decision. Outside of discerning marriage, it merely become a near occassion of sin.

Please see my above post, and you of all people in this thread should have noted the context.
The relationship mentioned in the OP, the boy was a minor, she** is** an adult.
I love that he is given the benefit of the past tense where she is not.
The relationship has been secret, kept from the father of the minor.
Of the man who was formerly, but is not now, a minor.
When the father found out, he stopped the boy from contacting the OP.
Not to put to fine a point on it but the man in question is and was at the time an adult.
BUT the OP just won’t give up. She has to contact him, just one more time, because, you know “there are ways.” People have been accused of stalking for less.
What business is it of yours? She isn’t stalking him; She is breaking up with him.

Thanks. 🙂 Feeling judged sometimes is just part of life. As long as one remembers that no human could ever be their judge, however, one is pretty well, I’ve found!

As for the final letter, it is really more for me than it is for him. I am expecting no response anyway, so if he decides to say nothing, it really won’t hurt. I only want him to read it.

Please see my above post, and you of all people in this thread should have noted the context.
Right. The only thing you find wrong in the example is that the man is leaving his family. Not that he was her teacher, not that she was a minor when he first met her. None of that matters.
I love that he is given the benefit of the past tense where she is not.
She was a minor for 1 year of the relationship. He was a minor for 5 years. Big difference
Of the man who was formerly, but is not now, a minor.
So they kept the relationship a secret until the boy was an adult. Then ther father finds out. You don’t see anything fishy about that?
Not to put to fine a point on it but the man in question is and was at the time an adult.
He was not an adult when the relationship started. He was a boy of 12. She was a girl of 17, but became an adult within a year. The boy on the other hand continued to be a child.
What business is it of yours? She isn’t stalking him; She is breaking up with him.
SHE came here asking for advice. He already broke up with her. She doesn’t need to do anything. When someone breaks up with you, you don’t have to have just one more contact with them. Whether there are ways or not, just drop it.
