Holy Spirit in Quran : invitation to FaithofAbraham

Hello FaithofAbraham,

i am inviting you specifically to this thread because Islam teaches the Holy Spirit is Gabriel.

What is your understanding from Quran? if it is Gabriel, how do you reconcile it with what the Bible says? if it is not Gabriel, who is it?thank you

God’s Spirit is God, and Gabriel is an angel in the presence of God who brings prophecy, like to Mary about Jesus. But God’s Spirit also gives power of prophecy.

So it seems to be a difference of an angel telling you God’s Word, as opposed to God dwelling in you and you speaking God’s Word as a prophet.

Why don’t I understand this statement? Is this a dodge?

The question is - Is the Holy Spirit Gabriel?
 
It seems to be a “dodge” only if you insist on approaching the scripture from a fundamental/literal view. i thought the answer was clear.

If Gabriel is an angel, then he is God’s Word and Spirit instead of God to us, but only as long as God allows it. As Jesus would be. The Holy Spirit is the power of God, God’s Spirit. Such angels and prophets are servants of God who deliver God’s Word by the power of God.

Luke 1:19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

We have a different notion on what an angel is, but then you’re answering the OP question and you’re most welcome with your answer. I wish you could have been more direct for a slow mind like me. Beginning with a yes or a no and followed by the explanation would make it very simple.

Gabriel is a spirit, ok, but am asking if he is the Holy Spirit of God…in other words, is the Holy Spirit a created angel?

No, an angel is an angel, God is God. The Holy Spirit is God, that is just His force and power that goes out carrying God’s Word and commands to make things happen. To create things, to give prophecy, etc.

Gabriel is a created angel, but he goes with the power of God, the Holy Spirit.

Right. I don’t really know of any verses like that, there are verses that say Jesus was strengthened with the Holy Spirit.

I would need to see the context. We can assume any prophet or angel is working by God’s Power.
 
if we both agree the Holy Spirit is God , How do you think the Quran differs from the Christian doctrine that God (the Father) has a Holy Spirit?

Trinity has three persons together as God, each with a nature.

There is a Father nature.
Son/Word has a human nature.
Holy Spirit is more vague.

The Christian nature of the Holy Spirit seems to be pretty similar to the Quran as just being the power of God that dwells in people, it’s not separated as much as the Son which has been given a human nature. The sticking point is mainly with the human nature.

i didnt even understand this analogy…and i doubt a Christian will give it…but anyway, step by step things can be cleared…

I can and do accept Trinity that way, without an incarnation.

The analogy goes:
  1. Father = God.
  2. Holy Spirit = God’s power gone out into the world.
  3. God’s Word = God’s messages to the world.
2 & 3 dwell in humans and they become prophets. Or with Jesus, an existing human, they dwell with so much power that he rules over us like God does, but he only does it because God allows him to, he is still a man.

Similar to:
  1. Me at the computer.
  2. My action of typing.
  3. My words and message you are reading.
