It is the teachers that complain about the money that we have to worry about! There is not accountability for the poor teaching skills of teachers especially when they have tenure then you really can’t get rid of them…

Let me clarify that I am not speaking about all teachers but maybe 60-75% of them…there are some really good teachers out there, where I don’t know…and until they come to our towns public schools I will send my kids to Catholic School!

Karin, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, I don’t think it’s fair to quote that 60-75% of teachers are not “good”. This is just your opinion. Like I wrote above, my husband is a teacher, I know many teachers, and my kids go to public school. I used to homeschool and Catholic school my kids. The problem is NOT the teachers. It is the families/parents. Even in the kids’ Catholic school, there were very ill-behaved, spoiled kids who were not respectful in school. Also, in my old homeschool group, there are quite a number of poorly behaved kids, who are disrespectful. A couple of the families have college aged kids who no longer attend Mass and are out partying, doing drugs, etc.

I agree, that if teachers are complaining about the money they make, then they might want to change professions. My husband will not make any more money until he gets his (required) Master’s Degree. We pay for his schooling on our own as do most states. It will take him around 2-3 years to get his Master’s, as we have 3 children and other family responsibilites. Until then, he will continue to make in the 30,000 dollar range.
I’m glad you can send your kids to a Catholic school that is satisfactory to you. Some families just are not able to afford that opportunity, nor can they homeschool.

Giannawannabe-I was speaking in regards to the area (town) that we live in.
I agree with you also that the parents** need, must, should** play a role in their kids lives (school, out of school, spiritual etc.) but in the area I live very few of the parents choose to do that!! In regards to the Catholic Schools having “problem kids”, maybe where you live but here the kids dont behave, follow rules etc. they are kicked out…it is a private school they dont have to take you. where the public schools do have to take the “problem kids”.
Also I know that the Catholic College here in our state offer a masters program in teaching where the cost is paid for by the catholic school (grammar) …you have to promise to teach in them for so long during and after your degree…something to look into ?!

Been lurking on this post, but just wanted to say that my friend finished her master’s in a special program tailored for teachers w/families. Little less than 1 yr. worth of 6-7 hours (I think) per weekend. Maybe there are programs like this in your area?
Okay, good thread. I’m back to lurking… 🙂

You know what Jennifer? I’d love more info on that. It might be that his Master’s is in statistics, so that may limit his options. If you come back “lurking”, maybe you could PM me? Thanks:D

Karin,
I just noted you live in NJ. That is quite a liberal area, isn’t it? Glad that you can send your kids to a good Catholic school. I think Catholic school is great. The schools by us are 4300-6200 annual per student. On that teacher salaryof my dh’s-kind of out of our price range:D
I do believe public schools are different in different areas of the country.
DH is a tenured high school teacher. He would lose a lot of money and benefits by switching schools at this point. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Giannawannabe- I do understand about tuition costs at Catholic Schools…the grammar school cost 3700.- per year not including the uniforms and supplies and my eldest is now in Catholic High School which are not funded at all by the parishes (the grammar schools are) and the tuition is 7550.- for the year…and it increases by approx. $400.00 per year.😦 !!! I have no option but to send my kids to private school as our school district is so bad…well I could move I guess but more than likely will come across the same problem somewhere else. where does your husband teach (state)?

… That is: Home-school students should be allowed to participate in any public school activity, …
Sounds like a classic case of wanting to have your cake and eat it too.

If they choose to opt out of the system then they have to live with the consequences and that’s that. Schools are funded by the number of enrolled students…this family basically wants to steal from everyone else and use the Constitution as a cover

Using their logic I should get a rebate on my taxes because I don’t have any children.

Schools are a public utility set up for the common good like parks and libraries and roads

Sometimes I worry about the nation. Too many people seem to want everything their way but don’t want to pony up.

Steve,
Thank you for cutting to the chase.
In my opinion if someone chooses to send a child to a private school…fine…just don’t expect everyone else to fund that choice.
That goes for any private shool…religious, secular, military.

John

Homeschooling just keeps on increasing in popularity, I know for me here in CA, I just don’t feel public schools are an option.

I’ve heard that an increasing amount of school districts are trying to woo back the homeschoolers by offering tailored programs and classes attractive to homeschool students and parents.

I am thankful that I live in Wisconsin where the public schools are very good. My children are having wonderful experiences here. I would never want to deprive them of the experience of friends and school. My warmest memories are of my school days.

Who may I ask is “funding” my choice? The anwser is me…I pay the tuition and I also pay the “large” property taxes for the kids that go to the public schools. I am not asking anyone to “fund” childs education in private school, I am only asking that people pay attention to how the money is spent in our schools.

Yes, you are one of the lucky ones that have good public schools…but we are all not that lucky:( !
My son who has attended Catholic school from 3-8th grade and now is in high school (Cahtolic) has never been deprived the chance of experiencing friends and school just because I choose to send him to a school that private. The only thing I deprive him of is a substandard education and hanging out with kids that are trouble makers!

You heard it here first, folks. Those who think public education in the U.S. has gone decidedly downhill are really just women-hating racists who want special-needs children hidden so that they can be forgotten about:

I’m sure you would support defunding public schools because there exists a hardcore minority in this country intent on destroying public education. They look wistfully back to a time when women and minorities had no right to be educated. And forget about kids with special needs.

And we wonder why the Europeans and Asians are so far ahead of our kids??? This country (a large majority) does not value education or feel it is important…to them sports, music, art and who knows what else are more important…I hope they feel the same way when these kids start running our goverment.

This is great to hear—especially out in California. Perhaps homeschooling is providing the needed competition to alert “bad” public schools that they had best improve.

Just to bring back this statement. Are there any other public schools that allow homeschoolers in for band, choir, etc. My friend who still homeschools, was warmly received when she wanted to sign up her kid for band. Why is it different here than in other areas?
40.png
Giannawannabe:
That’s terrible. In our Public schools, it’s extremely common for homeschoolers to opt in for band, art, computers, sports, etc. I’m not sure about the curricular classes though. I haven’t heard any homeschoolers opting in for them.

Karin,
While you may not wish that to be so…the vouchers crowd wants exactly that. They want tax dollars to be diverted to private education.

Good for them. Vouchers ought to be allowed in every state. There is no reason not to, and voucher programs have been proven an effective way of helping people get their children out of failing public schools.
