Homosexual Artists, Musicians, etc

If somebody doesn’t like that, tough.
You’re, of course, free to do that if you choose, but it’s not a moral imperative of the church, and it seems obvious to me that anyone who takes this position must have some kind of special animus toward gay people (unless you’re filtering for every other type of sin as well, of course.)

Such innuendo doesn’t phase me a bit. 😊

What innuendo? I’m genuinely confused.

We’re just having a discussion. I’m not trying to subtly insult you.

The original post was a blanket statement. It did not ask if one is prohibited from buying products that promote homosexuality. If that was the question, then I fall back to my previous reply. Hate the sin, love the sinner. Refusing to do business with someone simply because they are a sinner is not the teaching of the church. (Which is, by the way, a house of sinners.)

My parents, family and friends all think the same as me and yourself.

One thing to consider, assuming that the artist, musician, etc. is someone local that you can get to know in your part of the world, is the good effect that your loving attitude and friendliness may have on the homosexual.

In spite of all the glamorization of homosexuality, it’s actually a pretty lonely life. It’s not always easy to find someone to love, and although some gay couples stay together for a lifetime, many split up after a very short time. If they were legally married, then they discover that they can’t just walk away from each other, but they have to deal with issues of property dispersal and possibly even alimony, and lawyers, and all the rest of the messiness and heartbreak of a legal divorce. (I’m speaking from the experience of knowing a gay friend who had to go through this awful experience.)

Sometimes the homosexual has experienced rejection from their family–so difficult and awful to bear.

So–if you are patronizing their art, or their business, you have the opportunity to demonstrate Christ’s love to them. There is no sin in being loving and friendly and making friends with someone who is homosexual. YOU may be the one light in their dark lives. YOU might be the one Christian person who doesn’t treat them like a pariah.

And…you might just find a real friend, someone who brings light into your life, too!

Again, this only applies if the person and their business/art is local, in your town or city. We really can’t have much good influence on movie stars or superstar singers, other than praying for them.

I don’t cultivate friendships in general. If I did, they would be with people whose morals and lifestyles and faith I could respect. People who would inspire me. And people with a shared world view and shared interests. That much limits the pool.
Whether they would want to be friends with me, is another question.
Pretty moot, anyway as Jesus Christ is the only friend I really need.

No, I don’t. Don’t have the time or energy. I’m around people all day long, mostly kids. Then I want my alone time and I don’t get lonely for face time with “friends.” Might not work for you but it works just fine for me.

Still don’t understand? Read The Imitation of Christ, Book One in particular. The Holy Trinity and Mary are more than enough for me. Not for anyone else to judge.

To construe John 15: 13 as meaning Jesus requires us to cultivate human friendships is bad exegesis–and it’s proof texting.

I’m confused. I notice a trend here on CAF the moment a Catholic doesn’t support a gay persons lifestyle right away some folks come barging out defending them and judging the Catholics saying “Hey now! You better feel the same way about those who commit every other sin under the sun or you’re a judgemental person!!” and then the Catholics call the other Catholics judgemental because Jesus forgives sinners so how dare we not embrace every single solitary human being on this planet with whom we disagree on morals contrary to God because hey! that man who lusted today for 2 seconds is no different from the man promoting a homosexual lifestyle contrary to Gods law and blaspheming Jesus holy name! We are all sinners so let’s sing Kumbaya and support and be friends with the worst of them because there are no sins worse than others? What about discernment. Just seems a trendy and very politically correct and safe stance to take making sure any Catholics who mentions the gay lifestyle better feel the same way about others. It’s like there’s s police squad, too bad it doesnt go beyond that into clearer reasoning so we can understand better. Muting this thread now because I don’t equate all sins as equal. After all there are mortal and venial sins.

I know that the local grocer looks at porn. So I boycott the local grocery story.

I know that the local bookseller is a drunk. So I boycott the bookstore.

I know that the local taxi driver is civilly divorced and remarried. So I boycott the taxi company.

I know that the local baker uses the Lord’s name in vein. So I have boycotted bread.

I’m obviously being sarcastic. Some comments on this thread are the “rigid” Catholicism Pope Francis has repeatedly and strongly condemned.

No they’re not. People are not required to support them if they do not want to. It’s not really a big deal.

There’s also a disproportionate fixation with LGBT issues. I’ve seen it as bad as maybe 20 threads I personally read trying to pin the child abuse scandals on gay priests. I will give you that there is a higher percentage of gay relationships with larger age differences, but these are adult men. I know plenty of gay men who find pedophilia just as disgusting as you do. pedophilia is about abuse and control, not romance.

Yep. If an artist wants to trumpet their homosexuality, one is free to ignore them.
I would take care to measure how you hear things; for the measure by which you hear things might also be measured out to you.

What’s most likely to happen is, if you “ignore” them, you’ll only create open space for them to speak as loud as they want. When Christ went silent, it’s because he had already demonstrated his mercy, and he also knew he was going to be crucified.

That’s not really what you are doing. As the OP, you’re approaching the choir here to garner support, which is fine. But what works of mercy have you done lately? And are you ready to suffer in silence as Jesus did?

What I am saying is - if you disagree with them too harshly, you’ll likely just amplify the voice of your opponent. In Jesus’ case, amplifying the voice of his opponents worked for Him - because He was despised as the least of all men, and His Father God acknowledged this to resurrect Him. But Jesus suffered immensely for the sake of sinners, too.

When Jesus works many of his miracles - one of the first things he does is usually to quiet the soul of the person with the troubled spirit. This addresses the first issue, so the troubled spirit does not have room to make further discussion of something evil or hypocritical.

Then He usually performs a work of mercy. He doesn’t provoke the evil spirit, but Jesus takes the sin upon himself. For instance - despite the objections of the Scribes and Pharisees - he didnt tell the man with a withered hand, “Tough. It’s the sabbath. See you tomorrow…”

What seems to silence many of the demons is a sort of confidence in God and gentle mercy upon the sinner. Christ is willing to suffer for them.

I can see where you would want to fight the demon, but some things are better left up to higher powers.

As a note, I am not gay, nor liberal, nor non-traditional; I’m a moderate conservative. I appreciate your views, and I wish you the best. Just please, when you look at the souls of others, take care of your fellow man - for we never really know most of the people we meet, and yet the God who provides for all, also knows the intentions of all as well.

Pax.

Actually…no. I’m not the OP. Stopped reading this pontificating when I saw that.
