Hours in the public swimming pool for women only

In my country, in France, there is a debate concerning the time planning in the public swimming pools in order to reserve some hours for only women. This asking is coming from muslim women.

What is your point of view like catholic, then catholic woman and catholic man?
As a woman, I would be more likely to go if it were for women only. Like Jazzercise, usually just women, and water aerobics, usually just women, and Curves, for women only; I would rather work out without men present.

I don’t see anything immodest with something like a one piece bathing suit. Yeah maybe for a Catholic female a bikini is off limits.

But just because there are other men around (gasp!) doesn’t mean you can’t swim or enjoy yourself.

Segregating public pools is silly to accommodate one group (Catholics or Muslims). 🤷

Now private pools i’ve got no problem with it.

I am sorry for my manner to reason. But for me before choice of wear a type of clothe, of swimsuit for going to the pool, or before to say I am not confortable for being with men, before all, there are the concepts that rule and influence the choices.

I wanted to understand why a type of people acts like that? What are the hidden reasons, the deep motives, the deep intellectual approaches that influence the decision.

Actually, what are the reasons in link with the true natural law that influence women and muslim women for asking. What are, per se, the licit reasons in link with the true natural law?

Sorry, if there was a big misunderstanding?

Not all women are comfortable with their bosoms and butt cheeks in full view of the world. And there are some very immodest one piece bathing suits.

Public pools often have “adult swim” hours so that adults can swim comfortably without kids splashing around. Gyms have womens and mens sides. Some gyms are all women or all men. It makes a lot of people more comfortable. What’s so different about a group of women who want to swim comfortably without men around.

If it was just to accomodate one religious group, I would agree with you. But to accomodate a sensibilty which, by the way, is shared by conservative Muslims, Jews, Catholics and Mormons doesn’t seem bad.

You didn’t read all my post. I said private pools can do it all they like and want. Feel free to go to a women’s only gym and swim the day away.

But when I go for a swim in my town pool this summer I don’t want to have to get out to accommodate a minority (not many Catholics or Muslims where I live); nor should I. Public pool means everyone’s welcome. And if you can’t handle that, well that’s too bad.

I was talking about neighborhood pools which aren’t really public or private.

However, even with public pools, they usually don’t have everyone welcome** all of the time**. There are times for adults, times for kids, times for senior citizens, times for swimmers with disabilities, times for those who want to swim laps, etc. Why not times for women?

I think people are just upset about this because it is Muslim women requesting it.

See Corki’s post. I don’t think you can possibly understand, given that you seem to be whole heartedly endorsing the bikini as an ideal choice for swimwear.

The older I get, the more modest I get and the more uncomfortable I get excercising around men, especially in a swimsuit. You can call me a victorian or puritan Catholic all you want. But you can’t possibly understand having lived your life as a man and been on the other side of stares and glances.

I am a man and as a man, I want to be able to swim, to pass time with women on the beach or at the public swimming pool without being seen as a bad man or a pervert.

If in this world, males and females are not capable to respect mutually, even without long and large clothes, I mean in swimsuit, one piece or two piece, it is sad.

Men have to respect women, women have to respect men. Men have to be gentlemen and to assume their masculinity; women have to be feminine and to assume their feminity. I am against the seduction of women, I mean the power on men by the sexual attraction and I am against the domination of men on women by the force. I do not like the point of view as if there is by principle a fight between males and females.

Men have to learn to watch the beauty of woman without lust even if they are almost naked; Women have to accept that a man can watch them in this situation. It is a problem education.
I do not want prudish attitude like the rule in the world.

Question:

do you think that it is possible for a catholic man to watch a naked woman, not his wife wihout lust, only for beauty?

Do you think that it is possible for catholic woman to watch a naked man, not her husband without lust, only for beauty?

This has nothing to do with what men might think or want.

I am a woman and as a woman I would love to have some time to swim with other women, pass time with other women at the pool and not be seen as puritanical.

Can’t we both have what we want? Why should your wishes supercede mine?

[not to mention that, as a man, this isn’t really your issue to fight]

You are free of your choice.

But for muslim women that ask this special session, it is only swimming pool for them if and only if they get this special timetable, otherwise no swimming pool, because by principle it is sinful to be with men, and actually their fathers, husbands or brothers prohibit and under their shoulders every minutes.

These women are not really free.

Everyone is welcome except women whose religious beliefs require modesty of attire and gender separation. It used to be there was also no accommodation for disabled people in public pools, or children, or seniors. Now there is adequate accommodation for all these groups in most public pools. Why not for women as well? Public also means that one makes accommodations for everyone, including minority groups. “And if you can’t handle that…”

It seems to me that this particular group of women do not have an alternative,it is either women only or no swimming pool or clothes on.It is not a question of preference, and not even modesty,it is the law.
yes,I would give them some time in peace.Hopefully, they will give me some time in peace in bikini in the MIddle East;)

The issue isn’t what you want. It’s what women are requesting.

If you want to swim with women, do so at pool or beach where the sexes mingle. There’s nothung wrong with that.

Allow the women who wish to swim without men present the freedom to do so.

Here is the point. This is no question of preference, not even modesty. It is the law.As you say,it is either women only or no pool,or full garment in the swimming pool.
It is not the case if I go to Middle East and ask for a time for women only cause I want to wear my bikini/tankini/ or Santa´s suit, whatever. They are asking for an equal opportunity:relax in a swimming pool safely.

I’m not making an accommodation for an oppressed woman (because that’s what women who wear headscarves and hijabs are) to satisfy her insecurities given to her by her religion or her patriarchal husband.

Now if women want time alone with other women just to relax and enjoy themselves I’m fine with it.

But if its for modesty or religious reasons forget it. Separation of Church and State. Build your own pool if your that afraid of men.

I have some difficulty understanding a Frenchman’s concerns, not being French. It is a public pool, paid for by taxes or the French equivalent of that? Hypothetically, if 20% of the potential pool-using population consists of females who strongly wish to swim with females, I’d accommodate them with some pool time. That’s a sizable chunk of people now being better served. If there is only a tiny number of any group, and you set aside time, this could lower pool functionality.

I certainly understand the desire for a woman to wish to swim with other women, just as I understand the desire for sex-segregated shower facilities, or even a private booth for showering. So it is very easy for me to wish to accommodate this desire.
