I’m actually pretty shocked at how dismissive people are of James Madison.

The constitution is truly dead.
This country is toast. We are going to spend ourselves into oblivion and evidently some of us don’t care as long as we can feel good about ourselves doing it. May God have mercy on us!

Yep. We are now a majority of takers and I cannot imagine any of those people voting for someone who might say no to free handouts. We are done.

He would most definitely have a chance as an independent - it’s high time the centrists of this country organized and used their clout, IMO. I’d vote for him as an independent candidate.
I remember when people said that about John McCain… Then it turned out he was a bigot, a racist, and a neoNazi.

Just to be clear: You wouldn’t vote for him on a Republican ticket, but would as an independent? 🤷

What I can’t understand is if Democrats don’t have any opposition, how do things get better? 🤷

The media??? Are you serious? Did you follow the recent Republican primaries and listen to the CANDIDATES excoriate each other? Is the media to blame for putting mics and cameras in front of them?
Primaries, heck. Whole blocks of delegates, such as those representing Ron Paul, weren’t given the time of day during the RN convention. Then they wonder why $300 million wasn’t enough to get them the Presidency.

What makes you think things will get better? Wait till you hear the cries and accusations, nationally and on this forum, when spending cuts are proposed.

Seems like some laws of physics, such as entropy, or increasing disorganization, may apply here as well, regardless (or because) of disproportionate spending cuts.

John McCain ran as a centrist? It is my impression that he took a sharp turn to the right on his way to the 2008 presidential election.

Don’t feel bad for him though. At least his birth certificate was accepted as genuine, and nobody (that I know of) drags his mother’s reputation through the mud or makes up stories about his poor, neglected half-brothers…

There’s no constitutional basis for using taxpayer money to benefit people hit by natural disasters, so in that sense it’s good it didn’t pass. It’s also good because it’s not the government’s job to take money from one group of people (in this case future generations since the money would come through new debt) and give it to another even if it was constitutional. Another reason it’s good is that even if the government had constitutional authority to do this and it was their job to do so, they’d be incredibly wasteful in doing it, so private charity/insurance would a better option. Some may disagree with the last statement, but that’s a matter of personal philosophy.

On the other hand it’s amusing people get bent out of shape on Sandy spending but no one will touch any of the other much more expensive government expenditures.
I’m understanding that the funds for the National Flood Insurance Program (started in 1968 )are part of the recovery package. We purchase a policy for flood insurance, it is underwritten by the government.

There’s an agreement that this program will be funded, and that my policy are guaranteed. Sort of a catch 22 I have to pay the policy, then I don’t get what I paid for. 🤷

That is correct. Crystal clear.

Running as a Republican would require him to conform his views to the extent that they would become unrecognizable to people like me.

I wouldn’t like to see him become a Democrat either because that would cause him to lose some of the “in your face” “take it or leave it” appeal that I find positively endearing. For me, the main attraction is that he’s genuine: what you see is what you get.

Well they certainly won’t if one party controls everything. It seems to me that is what some people want.

According to the media…

Who neglects those poor half brothers?

Amen…the media has become a convenient excuse for the GOP’s lack of success on the national level. If that is the case, then how have they managed to claim so many state houses and governorships? How’d they get the house? How did Bush get elected twice?
The last question is the equivalent of “Just how big is the universe?”

I certainly don’t. We need at least two major parties, maybe three.
In our political system, I think it’s unlikely that all three parties would last long as major political forces. In a winner-takes-all system we’d likely be back to two after a few election cycles.
