At some point in history will they because there is no proof start saying it was the ancient Mayan civilizations and i’m thinking i’ve heard that thinking already.

Some Mormons (but not the Mormon church - they know better) are already saying that. Some have posted such on this forum.

I’d be interested in hearing more about these Spanish helmets and swords found in Kansas. It is highly unlikely that they could have come from Cortés and his man because, (as best I know) he never went north of Mexico. Perhaps Coronado who did reach eastern Kansas?
Are you implying that Spanish battle gear came from some other source than the Spanish?
And I’d really like to hear more about any intelligent scholar in the field denying that the Mayans ever existed.
I’d like to know who made such a claim. lol.

Not at all. I’ve just never heard of any Spanish battle gear being discovered in Kansas, much less from Cortés.

Did someone say that?
Shortened/condensed version of: “At some point in history will they because there is no proof start saying it was the ancient Mayan civilizations and i’m thinking i’ve heard that thinking already.”

My boo boo i said Cortes and meant Coronado. I never said the Mayans did not exist what i was trying to say was next they will say the Mayans were the Nehi or levites and like i said i believe i may have heard that before. Any way to those who believe by faith no evidence is needed and for those who scoff no evidence is ever enough. I have nothing against Mormons as i grew up around them it’s just i do not believe there BOM.

If you can’t find any evidence whatever to support the historical claims of the BoM then logically you MUST conclude that the BoM is not what it claims to be. The reason that BYU can find ‘scientists’ who will produce convoluted explanations for the lack of physical evidence is simple - they are employees of an LDS supported organisation and would lose their jobs if they didn’t at least make the effort and are Mormons and so would lose friends and family if they were seen to fail to ‘support the church’ when invited by SLC to do so.
The most recent and advanced analysis of the writings in the BoM conclude that their were 3 authors and they have been identified from other writings by the same individuals as being - Sidney Rigdon, Solomon Spaulding and (to a lesser extent) Oliver Cowderey. End of story? No it is not - Mormons will cling on and on and on to their strange heresies -because they have been raised with the certaintly that they are the chosen, the spiritual elite of the world - hard to let go of feelings of eternal superiority, but highly advisable nevertheless.

That’s okay; I never said that you said that the Mayans never existed–I just wanted to know who said it… Now the claim that they were the Levites or Nehi is new to me–who said that?

Can you show me where to see that work?

Thank you! I’m doing a research project on borrowing in the 19th century and this should help a great deal!

Since it was a statistically based analysis, not just the very laborious effort of finding phrases in common, they had to have a statistician. The civil engineer has a strong background in Mormon Studies, like our Paul, here.

You are welcome. Seems lot of authors “borrowed” from each other back then. Plagirism wasn’t the “mortal sin” that it is today.

I have developed quite an extensive list of people that Spalding, Rigdon, and Smith & Co. could have borrowed from. From what I read of the study, it was an experimental thing, mostly testing the technique. And it worked. Maybe later on they will re-run it with a larger pool of possible authors.

Heck man i thought that was the name of the two warring groups but now i realize Nehi was a soft drink made by RC Cola and levites might be from the old testament. So what do i know about there names.Besides it’s the silly claims about the two factions that were talking about as there is no proof of any such thing happening any way.I’m just getting old and not to make excuses but name recalling is a big memory blooper for me any way and i’ve read and studied so much Christian History that i some times get things mixed up such as names and dates so thats my story and i’m sticking to it…

Two of the three faculty have very interesting backgrounds to be involved in linguistic research don’t they? A statistician and civil engineer? The only linguist in the group is an associate professor to the university.
ROFL! I’m a business admin grad! Spent 6 years on a study of plagiarism.

Never said that some one said the Mayans never existed.Either i’m not explaining well or your reading into my responses what i’m not saying. So i’ll explain it hopefully better. And what i was trying to say was if after a period of time and criticism from non Mormons that they the Mormon Church will claim that it was the Mayan society or people that they were speaking of and then claim to have proof.Personally i wish the Mormon religion was correct as it would be neat to be a God and have my own planet.

The idea that the Nephites and Lamanites were the various mesoamerican civilizations is not new. My wife’s grandparents went there when they were young to see where the Nephites walked. I don’t know how you could have allegedly been a Mormon and not known that. Look at all the Mormon art with BOM scenes- they all have “Mayan” architecture. Eveything picturing Nephites has pyramids etc. I can’t believe you never saw those when you were supposedly a member.

He was being sarcastic, m’dear. Some people here have another theory about the minimal historical content of the BOM.
