There was a LOT more to it than that. The only thing I read about Padre Pio being supressed is that about saying daily the Mass.
In the 1920s he was not only forbidden from saying Mass in public, but he also was forbidden to hear confessions, answer letters, bless people, show his stigmata in public, or communicate with his then-spiritual director. The Vatican also tried to move him to another convent in northern Italy and only backed off because the local people where he was threatened to riot if he were moved.
He was medically and psychologically investigated at least six separate times during his life.
Again in the 1960s he was disciplined and the other monks in his order were not even allowed to help him get from place to place (he was having difficulty walking by then) or bring him a drink when it was hot.
There were also many bad rumors spread about him that he was doing illicit things like having affairs, etc. None of which were true, obviously.
There’s much more in his biography but I have to go say the rosary now and I think I have posted enough to show that it wasn’t just a simple matter of not letting him say Mass because it took too long. The man was persecuted.
