How do I overcome the idea that God doesn't care?

That’s sad. The thing with me though is that in some ways I realize this is just kind of a dark night of the soul in a sense. I think a lot of times when things are going good, we don’t thank God enough for them. Where as when things are tough he is the first thing we blame. I hope that someday you can come to be more sure of God. With me its just that my dark spots are rather dark and crazy.
I became a Christian in the formal, believing sense in late 1982. But it was also not a particularly good time for me - I was going through a divorce, didn’t have a job, had to sell the home we had, and was living with Mum. I also have a bit of a disability (hard fo hearing - moderate to severe loss), which has always made it a bit difficult to socialise.

I’d also had a a mongrel of a father, who deliberately set out to destroy my confidence over a period of 20 years, and pretty well succeeded. “Fortunately” he was dead by that time, having died nearly 4 years before. Just as an aside, I still remember after his funeral when we were having a drink at the Gaythorne RSL, when I felt what almost seemed to be a spiritual dead weight being lifted off my shoulders, as though this ever present Damocles sword had been lifted, and I was free! I still remember it - it was quite noticeable.

Not what you should say about your father, but that’s the way it was. I hated his guts.

It was actually a relief that he was gone, and out of my life, and the lives of the rest of the family! That’s how I felt then, and to be honest, unless he’d made a profound and permanent change in his attitude, I wouldn’t want him back again. Because all he’d do would be to turn everything to hell around him…

My self esteem was at rock bottom, or close to it. Things improved a few months later when I got a job, I started to get to know the young people in the church

But a bit over a year later, I was at what we call a Scripture Union Beach Mission. I was once again struggling somewhat, as the divorce was finalised, the house was sold, I’d recently been chewed out by the boss, and I was feeling out of my depth in this particular environment, being a new Christian, without much confidence and so on. I was also surrounded by younger people who had far more confidence, far more Christian tradition in their backgrounds, and who would have had experienced only a small fraction of the frustration I’d been through up to that point. Frankly, they wouldn’t have had a clue.

So I was wondering “How do I know this is all true, and not just a psychological prop!” My attitude was not one of “God loves me!”, but “How do I even know your’e even there, and why should I believe You give a stuff??”

Anyway we normally had a daily daily Bible Study sessions for “mission leaders” run by the overall camp leader. Now the weather is hot around Christmas - New Year over here, and since we sitting under a marquis (large tent), it was quite soporific. I was half dozing, half fuming. It was also the hottest time of day, around 3pm.

But as the camp leader read from an Old Testament passage referring to King David, he quoted the words, “… a man after my own heart …”. Precisely as he did so, this “double whammy” hit me, like a breath going through you in waves from head to foot. It was very pronounced, very noticeable (by me, but nobody else), and it made unmistakeably clear that God existed, He knew my state of mind and that He cared.

Needless to say, my attitude lifted from that time on, at least for the rest of the camp.

Now there have been negative occurrences since then, but in light of that “double whammy” and two more that I had in the succeeding months (and none since - God’s not a chatter box), I’m well aware God exists. Incidentally in a few months we move an immense distance through the universe - a miliion miles a day just around the sun alone for example. But on each occasion, God knew precisely where to find me, and how to highlight a phrase each time that someone else was saying, without a single other person knowing. He’s there all right, and He knows us, despite the fact we’re cosmic dust in universe terms.

Now I don’t have an answer to all the evil and suffering in the world, particularly in view of the fact it’s obviously part of God’s plan, or it wouldn’t be there.

But I know from personal experience he’s there.

What I hope for in your case is a direct experience of God’s presence. Maybe you should ask Him point blank for something similar to what I had. He’s not deaf, and He’ll know what you’re asking for.

And perhaps you’re a “man after God’s heart”, but like David, going through a very dry, prolonged, frustrating spell hiding in the desert, and feeling like you’re all washed up. I think that’s how Moses would have felt for 40 years on the backside of the desert. Sheep, dust, heat, and no sense of any real future.

But then one day a burning bush spoke to him, out of nowhere.

I’m well aware God exists.
I believe that God exists, but I don’t believe He is all He is made out to be. I don’t believe He loves everyone. He has his favorites (Many are called; few are chosen, etc.)

And I have simply have accepted the fact despite my best efforts that I am not not one of His chosen. It’s not that I have rejected God’s love; it was never there to begin with. 😦

God has a history of letting those He loves suffer a hellish treatment while on earth (like His Son), or in making deals with Satan to see what what his greatest servants do when great suffering is brought upon them. (as with Job) He even knew that would get Job mocked falsely as a sinner – but seeing His loved ones being mocked and scorned unfairly when He isn’t downright causing it, doesn’t seem to be a problem for Him.

At least according to the stories that how He is. Basically an “abusive Father” and a “traitorous leader who plays games against His own people without telling them”, respectively, by today’s human standards. 🤷

So loving God is a pretty messy and risky proposition.

The only recourse I’ve found is to quit worrying about what the Father thinks/does because it’s just silly for me to guess – and just listen to the words of Jesus (and disregard most of the words I hear about Jesus) and learn my way into his mindset and worldview He refers to as “the kingdom”. 👍

Pay attention to how it is described.

Then compare it to what you’re going through.

I bet it is that.

I have felt this way for as long as I remember. I truly believe that God has singled me out and is deliberately causing me to suffer. I hate my life and everything about it. I have all but given up on Heaven and have absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that I’m going to Hell when I die.
I must say that I frequently go through such bouts.

I’ll pray that God will show you how much He loves you, warts and all; please, pray for me too.

Would you still love God if He never answered your prayers? Would you still love God if He didn’t show His care about you the way you expected? Would you still trust God even if He allowed you to feel lonely and abandoned by all and even by Him?

I offer you these you questions not because I need their answers, but because I believe that you need to answer them prayerfully.

I believe this as well. Some people are more blessed from the beginning. It’s akin to a person being talented at something. You and I will never reach their level of skill no matter how hard we try. When they died, they’ll be closer to Him than, if we make it, than we will be. So, they get the best of both worlds while we’ll get crumbs, but we’re supposed to be happy that we get that since we’re in heaven.

Jesus said just before being arrested, "I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). That had always puzzled me, how can THAT cheer me up when I am in pain or suffering?

But then, I read this, just a couple of chapters above: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father" (John 14:22).

If Jesus overcame the world, and His followers will do greater works than Him, then that means I, as a Christian, will more than overcome this world, because of my faith in Him.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, “For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:35-37)

That is why whenever I am down in the dumps, things do not go my way, I just remember: “So be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” And everything becomes better, even if the things never go my way eventually.

So no I do not see how God cannot care, because I refuse to let this world stop me from caring.

Why do you say that? “The effect of the antecedent will”, says Saint Thomas, “by which God wills the salvation of all men, is that order of nature the purpose of which is our salvation, and likewise those things which conduce to that end, and which are offered to all in common, whether by nature or by grace”.

“Thou lovest all things that are, and hatest none of the things which Thou hast made.” (Wisdom 11:25)

I second that idea for where to look. 👍

For the past two to three weeks I’ve had this really bad empty feeling that God doesn’t care about me. I’ve tried to do things like adoration and praying the rosary and all my mind tells me is that God doesn’t care and that all I am is worm food and that life on earth doesn’t matter. Its strange too because while I still believe God exists and want to live a good life, I feel like God doesn’t seem to care about me or other injustices. While I’m here on earth toiling and having a tough time in spite of being devout, there are people out there who reject God and live great lives (and don’t tell me they aren’t truly happy. I’m sure a lot of those people who reject God are perfectly fine as far as happiness goes)

It also doesn’t help that I have anxiety and probably have an anxiety disorder and am having a lot of stress at work. I’m to the point that I want God to show me mercy and just end my life at the tender age of 26. In all honesty it feel like God doesn’t care if I end up being some homeless bum on the streets or live with my soon to be retired mom or that I won’t have a good job. I feel sometimes like i have to do all the work and that God is just kicking back in a chair and not really helping. People always say how God is their warrior and fights all their battles yet to me God seems empty. Like he’s not there talking me and guiding me. I’d almost become an atheist but for the fact that to me the world is too complex to be just a completely random universal event. But I feel like I don’t have a personal relationship with God. More like I pray and talk to him but only get riddles and non answers back

So what do I do to combat this? I know in my head God is there but in my heart it feels like he could care less.
Hi,

regarding the people who don’t believe in God and are happy… if they got to know the joy of knowing God though, they’d realize what they’re missing. Also what they have is a natural type of happiness, not a supernatural joy. However, there are times when Christians go through trials like what you describe.

Here are some thoughts that I had while reading your post…

God cares about you because He died for you.
He is alone in church waiting for you whenever you can visit Him.
He is also ready to suffer anything for you and would have suffered the Passion hundreds of times for you if He needed to.
Is this not love?

Sometimes we just need to make acts of trust and not rely on feelings, and the feelings come later 🙂

regarding help with jobs etc… that is up to God. Sometimes He allows us trials… that is not a lack of love. It is not a punishment either. It’s a way to purify us so that we can be more perfect - He doesn’t want us to just be fit for Purgatory and the bare minimum.

As for you praying and not feeling God responding clearly… there can be a whole bunch of reasons:
  • our lack of trust blocks His graces even when He wants to give them (I recommend asking Our Lady to obtain trust for you, and keep asking this)
  • when we’re too nervous we also block His voice… His voice is not loud, but quiet, we need to be still and quiet to hear Him. The reason is He doesn’t work over our free will. Yes there are miracles where people hear His voice audibly etc but those are exceptions, usually He wants us to learn how to listen to Him because then we grow spiritually. 🙂
  • mental prayer can really help to learn to hear God. For a resource on mental prayer: beginningcatholic.com/christian-meditation.html
Also reading about the Saints has really helped me… they are truly good examples about how to learn to listen to God, how to trust Him, etc. In the end, whether we feel close to God or not, we don’t seek any experiences, we need to trust Him and He does the rest. We need to trust that His Will is good, and anything that contradicts this is a lie.

God bless you!

I’m not asking to win the lottery or anything. I just want to have a simple feeling of confidence that God really does care. But I have absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe that he does.

Are you looking for a warm fuzzy feeling? You’ll be disappointed.

God is love by DEED. Not by warm fuzzies.

God cares about you by…caring for you and providing for you.
One way to provide for you is to protect you from dangers that…you don’t know about.
You’ve dodged many bullets that God protected you from you have no idea!

Example: you had an uneventful drive home. Little did you know that a drunk driver who was going to crash into you (causing great pain and suffering to you), God arranged him to get a flat tire so he took a taxi home. But you don’t know this. You’ll never know it.

Well i’ll answer just the same in that I think I would love God, but not in a deep kind of love. In a way i’ve aways found myself attracted to a kind of deism type view because while I acknowledge God, at times he doesn’t seem to do much if anything. Sadly though I think this view comes from the fact that I ignore everyday miracles and that should be enough evidence to convince me of God.

Funny you mention this. A lot of times, different faiths will get people to convert by getting a “Warm fuzzy feeling” about their church. Mormons are notorious for this and so are other protestants. A church based on feelings can’t last because eventually feelings die but love is stronger. I’m reminded of a song talking about God listening in silence and I think thats what people need to do

And cults do this via “love bombing” which is basically “manipulating people by warm fuzzies.”

The devil is notorious for playing with our emotions and making us make decisions with them in charge.

'Quick! Shut down that brain and conscience! Emotions rule!!!" is the devil’s message.

No reason He does or doesn’t. He’s almost completely arbitrary when looked at from our logic, as far as I can tell. When I’m trying to “get along” and “solve problems” then I feel like He isn’t helping me. When I think of the things I have for the moment – the water in the showe, having something to eat or a place to get a meal, heat in the winter, whatever – then I obviously don’t understand God but I’m thankful for whoever made all this cool stuff for me.

This isn’t “well others are worse off” but for example I am lousy at keeping my plumbing up to date and when I’m bugged by my “low pressure” in the shower, I think how valuable the same shower would be to a soldier in the desert etc. So no I don’t feel guilty, and I don’t feel “better about my own problems” because there will always be others worse off, unless you’re Job (and that’s how God treats those He likes – hence my claim that from our view we have no idea).

I figure Jesus was here to show us to quit trying to figure out God, as much as to have a community mentality represented by His Body, whereby we look out for others as well as ourselves and learn to have peace even in a storm. I don’t bother trying to outguess what God thinks of me. I do what I do and I listen to Jesus and others’ ideas, and go from there.

Isn’t the greatest proof that He gave His life for you?

When someone goes through the Dark Night they feel like God does not care. They’re not getting any warm fuzzies from their faith. During this time, the only proof they’ll recognize of the love of God is if He gives them a hug.

Isn’t the greatest proof that He gave His life for you?
The whole idea that Jesus died for me is, to me at least, more of an abstract concept. It’s not like, say, a friend takes a bullet for me. Everyone says that Jesus died for my sins like I’m supposed to be impressed by it, but is has/had no immediate impact on me.

Besides, I never really understood the connection between Christ’s death and the salvation of the world. But that is a different discussion for a different day.
