Hi illusion, I didn’t follow the thread closely, I just saw this last post of yours and i’m not sure if the blue text above is what you believe or what somebody else in this thread believes…the spirit and power. This is reincarnation - the reincarnation of the spirit. The Bible itself states that John the Baptist possessed the spirit that had previously lived in, and as, the man Elijah - not his physical being and memory, but his spirit. What you seem to be saying is something different. Putting you own slat toward it, so to speak. I can’t see where anything you have posted contradicts the above? I am looking for unbias discussion. And I would like to read MORE re: nicodemus. The more information on the subject, the more chance to see the THREAD of truth amoung the dros.
Anyway, John the Baptist is not Elijah or a reincarnation thereof, neither in spirit nor body. This is the Catholic teaching on it (the LDS have a very slight expansion to the title Elijah as opposed to the person Elijah but the essence is the same with Catholic teaching). In the Book of John, John the Baptist denies that he is Elijah. In this event, John the Baptist affirms that he is not the person Elijah. In Matthew, Jesus stated that Elijah has returned which the disciples believed to be John the Baptist. Jesus is referring to the role of an Elijah - the herald for the Messiah.
Reincarnation is not compatible with Jesus Christ’s teaching of man’s journey to salvation. So, if you’re talking to a non-Christian, debunking re-incarnation is not going to be a good exercise. If you’re talking to a Christian, then you can present any passage in the scriptures about the afterlife as your evidence.
P.S. I don’t remember who said something about “How missionaries can convert Buddhists” or some such.
Missionaries don’t convert anybody. Only the Holy Spirit can convert. For if a person opens himself up to the Spirit, He can soften his heart and open his mind and prepare him for the message that Jesus is the Christ - even if he is Buddhist.
