Well the first case would be an example of Free Speech. You don’t have to like it but it goes every which way.

So is the second. It was nice of the video not to say what was being protested, just poor Muslim’s being harassed. Doing some basic research and you see that it was a woman’s rights group protesting what they saw as the supression of women. The speaker saying that “evil” is going on in there wasn’t talking about Islam, but about their ultra-conservative views. It was nice of the makers of that video to cut out any context.

Of late I’ve had my doubts over whether free speech is necessarily a good thing - it is something I’ve strongly believed in all my life, and posting videos like this just makes me wonder all the more. If you remove the right contextual points you can make anyone look like a bigot or a victim, as was the case in the second video. I haven’t bothered to do any research into the first, and all things considered it wouldn’t surprise me either way, although the group seems particularly obnoxious.

If your point is to say how horrible Muslims in America have it, just remember they have it much better than in Muslim countries. That freedom you utilize here in the West to practice your religion is the same freedom that gives people the right to protest those beliefs of yours - whether justly or unjustly.

The counter rally planned by Frank Gaffney in response to Choudary’s pro-Sharia demonstration was left without a raison d’etre after Choudary failed to show up as he’d previously announced (and promoted on Fox News). That left Gaffney and his group preaching to the choir so to speak as they denounced Sharia law to their followers as well as media and curious onlookers.

But just as the rally was dying out, a Muslim man who showed up to pray in front of the White House. He was quickly surrounded by a large group of protestors who shouted an array of insults at him: mocking him for drinking Starbucks coffee, telling him to go back to his country and even throwing tiny crosses at his feet as he prayed.

It is a fact of human nature that people tend to run faster away from things that they loathe and despise as compared to moving towards something that they may be attracted to.

A major reason why Islam is growing so rapidly in the United States is that people are running away from the followers of a certain religion because of their vile hatred towards Islam and their bigoted attitude and behavior towards Muslims in America.

No surprise then that many who despise them are running towards Islam.

In fact, I would think that networks such as Fox News have done more, either directly or indirectly, to help convert more Americans into Islam in recent years than the individual da’wa efforts of all the Muslims in America combined.

This of course is not to say that the Muslims of America have not done a good job of bringing Americans into Islam… but rather, it is more the case that people are running faster towards Islam because they positively loathe and despise the behavior and antics of bigots like those at Fox News and others like them, as depicted in the 2 videos that Sister Amy posted here, who are absolutely shameless in their vile efforts to denigrate Islam and Muslims.
 
I can assure you. I despise and loathe the bigotry on display but I won’t be converting to Islam any time soon.

Amy you ask how it can happen.

I’d answer that bigots and morons come in every colour and creed, when enough of them get together, this happens.

I don’t know if that was directed to me because of my comment on ‘bigots and morons’, I’m not making an accusation at Fox News. They aren’t even a blip on the radar over here in the UK so I’m not qualified to judge.

But anyone who shouts ‘Go home’, ‘Go back where you came from’ and, I believe in the latter video; ‘‘go eat some sand’’, no doubt a ‘clever’ reference to the racist epithet ‘Sand (N)igger’’ used to refer to those of Middle Eastern/South Asian Muslim descent…

Anyone who does these things is a bigot.

Yes, Bigots who oppose forcing women to wear a vail and favour stoning them if they so long as look at an unrelated man.
 
I don’t have a problem with free speech. What I’m asking is how people get so crazy that they do things like this?

How do you harass someone praying in public? And at the same time holding a sign that “Jesus Loves You,” seriously?

How do people in a country like this one, America, scream derogatory insults at children?

What I want to know, and the reason I posted it here on the Catholic forums, is why Christian people don’t speak out against it? How come Christianity doesn’t stop these people from exhibiting such hatred?

I don’t mind that people would protest the bogus “pro-Sharia” rally promoted by a serious nutjob. But that they would harass someone showing up by himself just to pray? Taunting him like that? And in the name of their religion?

Is that what this great country is becoming? A country of raving lunatics?

People speak out about that sort of idiocy depicted in the first video all the time, Christian and otherwise.

But the same question can be put back right on to you, why do Muslims not speak out against misleading videos that try to turn themselves into victims of simple protests?

I could ask you a similar question: Why doesn’t Islam stop people like Choudry (who is, in your words, “a serious nutjob”) from advocating Shari’a law in non-Islamic countries? Why doesn’t Islam stop Osama Bin Ladin and his terror franchise from murdering innocent people of all religions? Why doesn’t Islam stop people from being violent and stoning to death 13 year old rape victims? Why doesn’t Islam stop the disenfranchisement and disempowerment of women that we see in countries where Muslims are the majority? Why doesn’t Islam stop Muslims from tearing down, torching, and otherwise defacing other peoples’ places of worship, as they have done to Christian churches and Buddhist temples across the East, and in certain places in Africa? Why didn’t Islam stop the Taliban from blowing up the Buddhas of Bamiyan? Why didn’t Islam stop Muslims from murdering Shahbaz Bhatti on Wednesday? I was referring instead to the bigots shouting ‘Go back home’, ‘Go back to where you came from’ and, if I heard correctly ‘‘Go eat some sand!’’ which, unless my knowledge of US slang is severely stunted, is a quaint reference to that old racist epithet of ‘Sand (N)igger’ or ‘Dune (C)oon’, commonly used to refer in a derogatory way to those of Middle Eastern and South Asian stock.

They are racist bigots.

The Sharia law they oppose isn’t all sweetness and light, but opposing one form of bigotry does not automatically give you the right to be a different sort of bigot.

I’ll be quite honest, I had a rather positive outlook on Muslim’s until I came to this forum.

Nope it doesn’t, but condemning one side for biggotry is turning a blind eye.

The first video shows fundamentalist biggots, the second shows Muslim biggots trying to portray themselves as victims.

Except you didn’t turn it around. You showed a small group whom wasn’t relying on external support to operate being idiots, and a peaceful protest.

If Muslim’s would peacefully protest against Christianity that would be wonderful.

Disagree. It would be better than the situation we see today, but what would be wonderful is if Muslims would stop being babies, using incidents like the one in the first video to stoke their false sense of victimization in places where they are in fact being coddled and bolstered beyond all reasonable measures, and would instead sincerely look inside themselves and their communities and ally themselves with the actually persecuted minorities who are oppressed and murdered in places where they themselves are the majority.

The attitude that we see here instead is one of false equivalency and haughty, delusional arch-victimhood that is completely out of proportion with reality.
