If they are Muslim we tell them we are Catholic, If they are Mormon we tell them we are Catholic. If they are western Christian and look at us like a traveling circus I tell them we are mormon and my other wives are at home (or in the car, etc.). You get some REALLY wierd stares and then I just get a big grin and tell them we are Catholic. My wife and I are both 37 and we have 7 children. We get alot of funny looks in public and my boss has been making comments lately too concerning insurance, etc. (he’s a “Catholic” too - lapsed) I’m sick of being looked at as if we are freaks. I’m not sure why people are so concerned about it. What do you say to them? Many times I’m caught off guard and only later think of a comeback. How do you deal with it? We love our kids and can’t imagine like without them.
You have to have fun with people like that. I find Muslims are MUCH more accepting of a large family than most Catholics are. I like persian rugs and so when we are in a new big city I like to go to the “rug stores”. There is ALWAYS and old man there who gets a big smile and asks if they are all ours. When I say yes he says he is very proud of us and that it is such a nice thing to see a large family. This usually launches into a long litany of his family history, who runs what store, etc.
I know it is most likely part of their selling strategy, but they usually do have one or three of their children working with them. It is strange I find myself more at home in an Iranian rug store talking to the owner than at most Catholic gatherings these days (outside of our extrodinary form community that is).
