The qur’an in arabic is really much better than any poetry ive ever seen. The words match the sound of their meaning, it rhymes, it has rhythm, its really powerful.
I read it in English and that is probably why it seemed lacking in poetical beauty. Nothing wrong with the text, just my lack of knowledge.

I have read the Holy Qu’ran, and continue to read it. I also read the manual of Hadith. I wish I could read Arabic, because I feel like I am missing out…

I have listened to CD’s of the Qu’ran being recited and it seems to flow very nicely.

I have also read a great book entitled “The Muslim Jesus”, which I have re-read countless times. I highly recommend it.

A salaam alaikum.

Cleopa,

You may also be interested in reading “The True Message of Jesus Christ”, as it is an informative book on the message of Jesus, peace be upon him, from an Islamic perspective. A have a ebook copy (Microsoft Word file) that I downloaded from some site years ago. If you wish, send me a message with your email, and I’ll forward it to you.

With regards to the question, I have read the Bible, specifically the Catholic bible. My confirmation gift was a leather bound, “St. Joseph’s Edition.” I therefore believe it was the NRSV. I have probably only read the OT twice, at best, but the NT several times. Mind you, this means nothing, as I am far from a scholar on the new testament!

Regards

I would love to read the book. Email is on the way. Thanks jcaz.

A salaam alaikum

I couldn’t vote. I am planning on reading the Qur’an once I have studied enough Arabic (which I will begin this semester as a college freshman). To the Muslims on the forum, how far along in my Arabic studies do you think I’d have to be before I could read and comprehend (linguistically) the Qu
'ran? I’m just an Irish-Catholic girl who wants to understand Islam better, and I firmly believe that a major way of understanding anything/anyone better is by hearing/reading their side of things.

Hey Irene

to answer your question…a pretty long time, especially since your studying arabic as *one * of your courses in a non-arab country. WHen your not forced to hear arabs speak arabic all the time, the language becomes that much harder to learn (like any language). But its a good start

While understanding arabic is great (b/c you can read the Quran in the language it was revealed)…its not the only way you can understand the Muslim faith. Less than 20% of Muslims are arabs…so you can see that knowing arabic is not part of understanding Islam.

I recommend you get an english translation of the meanings for now with a good tafseer (explanation of the verses) on the side. you can go to whyislam.org and they will send you a free copy.

I have 2 new testaments, king james, but to be honest Ive hardly read it. I have read it, just not much.
KJV isn’t a Catholic Bible, it’s a protestant Bible and the Catholic Church is the only one authorized to interpret Sacred Scripture. 😃

Pick yourself up a copy of the New American Bible or a New Jerusalem Bible… OR if you want to read the first English translation of the Catholic Bible, pick up a Douay Rheims edited by Archbishop Richard Challoner (the KJV plagierizes a lot from this text).

I borrowed the Quraan from my High School library, made for some interesting reading. Poetically speaking, parts of it can be quite prolific. 👍

I did not answer the poll questions because they did not offer a choice that I could select. I have read the Koran and would like to ask how one would know if it was the accepted version. The one I read was in English at the library.

What do you mean by “accepted version”? There is only 1 Quran, revealed in Arabic…and it is the only one that all 1.2 billion muslims follow. The English Quran is not really considered Quran…but it is considered to be the translation of the meanings of the Quran.

Who was the translator?

I do not know who was the translator of the Qurann or Koran that I read from the library. I wondered if their was an “Imprimatur” so to say about the publication. Also, since there seems to have been a lot of fuss made about our military not touching the book without being gloved, I also wonder how the library manages to offer the Qurann or Koran. Would seem to be rather difficult to insist that infidels use gloves. Anyone?

I have a couple of copies that I use for reference when an issue arises.

It’s kind of fun when someone sends me an email quoting the Quraan and I look it up and there’s no such quote and I quickly reply. Kinda takes them aback.

Have you all read any of Robert Spencer’s books on Islam? I saw him on BookTV which is on CSPAN2 every weekend (all weekend starting around 10am Saturday and running until around 10am Monday. Bought his book (Islam Unveiled) and the video of his presentation. I read the book and added a host of yellow stickies. Bought copies as gifts. He has since written a couple more books on the subject. Excellent!!

So, 1.2 billion muslims follow an Arabic book that changes when the meaning is put into English? So, if that happens, who defines what is really being said? Does the translation cause a misunderstanding regarding a peaceful premise as opposed to the violent actions of Islamic terrorists? If the Arabic version is peaceful and loving, why aren’t Arabs sending public messages 24/7 that terrorists are to be condemned and that peaceful, faithful Muslims all over the world will help to eliminate their existence?
This could be done on “Aljazeera TV” and public service announcements could be made to apprehend these people.
Or is it that the Arabic edition, the one you have to touch with gloves if you are an ifidel, enourage something contrary?

Shouldn’t some interested party figure it out?

Peace,
How many Christians here read the Quran not read about the Quran? I am so curious to know. Please be honest.

i’ve read this evil book enough to know that it is a book of lies and filth straight from hell.

it contains blasphemy against Our Blessed Lord, the Blessed Trinity, and Our Blessed Lady.

Islam is not a religion, but a deadly, deranged, lunatic, murderous, demonic cult. In healthier times, this cult was kicked out of Europe.

To qualilfy as a religion, you need a Sacrifice and a Sacrificing priesthood. The Catholic Church alone qualifies.

I have - or sizeable parts of it. As I have no Arabic, I would like to find an English translation which is trustworthy (so far as a translation of any text can be); preferably with plenty of notes - any suggestions ?

IMHO, several of the texts about Jesus that are taken to contradict Christian belief do not in fact do so - but I take what little I know on this subject from Geoffrey Parrinder’s book “Jesus in the Quran”. I think other Christians could learn something from it - he has a very peaceable approach, and is well-informed. I think it is possible that the Koran is inspired, in part - but I can’t in the least see that it is an improvement on the NT. I believe Jesus Christ is the supreme, full, definitive, and final revelation of God - compared to Him, the Quran is not that great

I also have a large book on Shar’iah law by one 'Abdur Rahman I. Doi.
