How many rosaries do you own??

I’m not really sure how many I have. When my husband travels on business, he brings me rosaries. I have rosaries from Honolulu, Berlin, Seoul, London, and I should be getting one from Australia next month!! —KCT

**How wonderful for you. I am going to the Catholic Market Network, in NJ next week, and intend to treat myself to a new rosay…Last month I finally bought myself a plain black one…I’ve always wanted one…I has a St. Benedict madal on it. **
 
I have five. All were given to me as gifts. One was my grandfather’s, the one he took with him when he fought in WWII, and it was given to me when he died, along with his Purple Heart medal and his Latin Missalette and prayer cards.

Another was given to me by my parents for my first Communion. A third was given by my best friend, “just because”. A fourth from my church choir director at the end of the choir year, and the fifth was a wedding gift from my aunt and uncle.

I’m not sure which one is the most special. I treasure them all.
 
I have a lot of rosaries…I like to be able to give them away… 👍 I plan to keep quite a few.
 
Hi Friends!

I have many Rosaries used for different occassions and places.
I carry one in my pocket always.
I have one hanging in my car.
I have one hanging from my Prie Dieu at home for night prayer
I have one beside my bed
My kids have one hanging on their beds
I have many stored away in a box of other Catholic items
I have my most precious one given to my by my aunt as she was dying from Cancer

As long as we have one of our own and blessed at any time we are doing well. Remember the story of Lourdes?
Here is an interesting story from Lourdes:

Bernadette explained that while on her way to the Grotto early one morning, a lady named Pauline Sans (who was the Lourdes seamstress) had spoken to her; she had desired to have a memento of the Apparitions and so had asked the child if she would be kind enough to use her (Madame Sans’) Rosary that morning while the Blessed Virgin was praying with her. Bernadette had agreed to this proposal.

As Bernadette was about to make the sign of the Cross, she took the Rosary from her pocket but was not able to lift her hand to her forehead. The Lady asked Bernadette where her own Rosary was - here, the child lifted the Rosary high in the air for the Lady to see. But the Lady saw only too well “You are wrong” She told Bernadette, “this Rosary is not yours”.

Realizing she had Madame Sans’ Rosary in her hand, she put it back into her pocket and retrieved her own Rosary of black wood beads on a knotted cord, bought previously by her mother. Again she lifted the beads.

“Use those”, said the Lady sweetly, smiling at the child, and Bernadette was able to begin her prayers.

Obviously our own Rosary is precious in the sight of Mary. Kiss the Cross on it frequently saying hands of Christ bless me, feet of Christ lead me, Heart of Christ Love me.

A few years ago my husband and I were watching a Utah Jazz basketball game. The Jazz were losing (this was back when they went to the finals.) It was time for my prayers so I got out my rosary and went into the bedroom to pray. When I came back out my husband told me the Jazz were up by 10 points. I looked at the rosary in my hand and said “Wow! This thing really works!” :rotfl: We both started laughing.

Anyway, I know I own more than six. I love to pray the rosary and there is just something about looking at one that is very comforting. I think I cary three in my purse. My mom recently gave me her very first rosary from when she received her First Holy Communion.

One Rosary that I inherited from my great grandfather, and one “finger” Rosary I keep on my key ring. Having more than these wouldn’t really help me any. The “finger” Rosary is helpful on long drives and on the treadmill. 🙂

I rescue them from garage sales, estate sales, make them give them away, etc. There has to be a rosary in every pocket and at least three in my purse or car. I even have a plastic box “apple” filled with rosaries. Remember the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Well a rosary a day keeps the devil at bay.

Me, too! I have so many, too! and I also rescue them, mainly from thrift stores! It is such a pleasure finding them and rescuing. One I rescued from a thriftstore is a huge wooden wall Rosary–gorgeous. I’m not sure which one is my favorite, but the three I use the most are ones I rescued, all wooden. Two of them are from France and one is from Rome. One older wooden Rosary I had in my car hanging from the rearview mirror actually saved me and a woman pedestrian who ran out in front of my vehicle. She ran right out in front of me, apparently trying to catch a bus on the other side of the street and though I slammed on my brakes I still hit her and she landed on the hood of my car and into my windshield. When she stopped her nose was directly on the other side of my Rosary cross. She was uninjured and so was I. I believe we were being protected by the Trinity and Our Lady in my Rosary. Truly astounding. 👍

I/we have 2 Rosaries, 1 i got from my parents on the day of my first Holy Communion (when i was 8) the other 1 my brother made when he was at school and it was recently given to my 5 yr old. God Bless. Sue.
 
I have a lot, mostly because I make them, and I’m lazy about sending them off to the people I have made them for. I also make Anglican/ecumenical prayer beads – I like the flexibility of that new “tradition.”

I also have one that my mother’s best friend gave me when I became Catholic, a gorgeous one from the Rosary Workshop, a glow-in-the-dark plastic one, a couple of rosary rings, and a couple that I’ve picked up at garage sales.

Now, none of these have been “blessed” by anyone in particular (except possibly the one “auntie” Althea gave me…). What’s with the blessing part?

The rosary itself is a sacramental. You are making the world around you holy in your own way, it is nice to have things we use blessed, but it is not necessary.

We bless each other a lot, especially when we sneeze! We bless ourselves too, usually with a sign of the cross. Many people give a formal blessing to their children in the morning when they send them off to school.

You could have your home blessed too, in a way you are consecrating this or that thing to good and holy purposes! Whenever you approach your priest you can ask for his blessing, he will be more than happy to oblige!

We especially love to have things blessed by a priest, he stands in the place of Christ at the altar.

Christ came to us at a time when the material world was generally considered evil. Even the body was considered impure and evil by many. We Christians see the world as the work of God, and it is very good! That is why we expect a bodily resurrection.

These blessings consecrate our surroundings, and our lifes little details, to our God whom we love with all our hearts!
 
Thanks for a great post…We do need to be reminded of these things now and then!

Oh dear…I feel so guilty! I love buying rosaries (I’ve really only bought a few in the few years I’ve been Catholic), but they don’t get a lot of use. The Marian devotions have been one of the hardest things to get used to. My husband would like to have a nightly rosary, but while I don’t mind saying it in a group, I have a hard time praying anything with just him. Gotta work at that. In the meantime, the rosary accumulation process continues. I guess we’ll be all set if we have a big family! 🙂

Dear Katia… welcome home!

I wouldn’t worry too much (actually, at all) about loving to buy rosaries. It’s a sign that you are drawn to the rosary. I think that there’s actually no rosary that I wouldn’t want to own. So many of them are very beautiful… as in “pleasing to the eye.”

I do own several… from the one that Mom (Roman Catholic) and Dad (generic Christian) gave to me on the day I was confirmed when I was 13 years old… it’s made of “aurora borealis” type of crystal…

In the 35 years since then… I’ve bought only one or two other… and received many others…

a friend actually made one just for me! … someone gave me a plain plastic one that had been blessed by the Pope from her visit to the Vatican several years ago – the Pope blesses whole boxes of them that people bring to St. Peter’s Square for him to bless them from the balcony… I’ve got a couple of the give-away plastic ones that our parish provides for us to give to anybody we meet who might want to “try the rosary” (and yes, I find occasion to actually give them to people who WANT them!)… a week ago, I took one of the rosaries that were made of only pink plastic beads and blue plastic beads that the local Catholic radio station was giving away for Pro-Life…

to the one that I bought for myself several months ago which is actually the one that I use because I like how the crucifix fits between my fingers so that I’m not really quite conscious of it as I move the small, perfectly round, perfectly smooth beads on it while I pray the rosary. The beads are small enough that the tip of my thumbnail can get between the beads to move the rosary along, while still having a bead large enough that I can pinch between my thumbpad and the first joint in my pointing finger. That rosary was only $11.95.

I’ve got Mom’s four rosaries now, too. May perpetual light shine upon her!!

Oftentimes, I just use the 10 fingers on my hand… especially if I’m a passenger on a twisty, high mountain road with flimsy barracades to the drop alongside the road! Like Mom always said (may she rest in peace!) – the good Lord gave you ten fingers, use them!

As far as praying it only in a group… I wouldn’t worry too much about that. It’s natural to want more than one person with us to say it… it IS a bit different saying it with only one other person. Not better… not worse. Just a bit different.

What a blessing you have in your husband… who wants to say the rosary each night with you!! When you’re ready… you’ll say a rosary with your husband. I have no doubt about that.

My husband in NO WAY would EVER say a rosary with me… but, then again, as a staunch Southern Baptist he’s just thrilled that I told him that we do NOT worship Jesus’ mother! He’d always been told that.

May I ask a small favor of you, please? When you do say your rosary with your husband, couldja please offer up a prayer to our Lady for my husband? Thanks!!

I have rosaries the way some people have mice. Everywhere, and they breed. I always carry at least 3, so I always have one to give away, which I do frequently. The rosary is a great evangelizer. I also carry “How to say the Rosary” pamphlets in Spanish and English in a baggie in my purse to give away with them.

My favorite to pray with is one with larger wooden beads on a string, not a chain, with a carved wooden crucifix, not a wood with metal corpus. They don’t fall apart the way the ones on a chain do in your pocket or purse.

I have a large wooden wall rosary that belonged to my English grandma, Nell Turton (Nana) that my mother left me, it is a family treasure.

I have a one-decade ring rosary on my key chain, so I will never be without one (also a plastic card with the Stations of the Cross on my key chain).

I have a knot rosary on my rear view mirror. Although I don’t pray with it (I have a rosary CD in the player) it is there to moderate my road rage.
 
At times I own more than 100. I distribute them at the prison that I minister at. Unfortunately, many like to wear the little plastic rosary beads, but don’t know how to pray the rosary. I have a little booklet that I have been paaaing out on how to say the rosary. The Knights of Columbus are very generous in sending us little booklets ,also.
