i wear a veil because it’s easier for storage. i can keep it my car or purse and it is about the same length as my hair and almost the same color so it blends. Why select a mantilla over simpler head coverings?

Airforcemom, welcome home!:extrahappy: My cousin is back in St. Bernard too. You keep right on wearin’ that head covering. And remember the sight of Apb. Hughes processing down Canal St. with the Blessed Sacrament on Corpus Christi this summer. We survived Betsy and we’ll survive Katrina! God bless!I wear a Jewish headcovering from head-coverings by Devorah.com
Very simple and easy to wear - people notice it but I don’t stand out as I would with a hat or mantilla on. I have a white beaded one for summer and a black beaded one for winter. I’m back at the church I attended before Katrina and the only other lady to cover her head has returned to the area and she is in her late 80s (might even be in early 90s). I have never seen her in church without her head covered even when she was cleaning it - she was a member of the altar society that cleaned and took care of the church every week.
Is there an implicit judgement on those who do not wear them? Are those called to wear them somehow holier than those who don’t?. We are trying to submit ourselves to God. Instead we get called names and demeaned by our own catholics. Why such angry and resentment? We don’t force it on anyone nor do we judge those who don’t wear them. We understand that to wear a covering is a calling and not something to be takenlightly. To wear a covering effects your whole person.
Weddings and First Holy Communion are Costumes. You don’t wear your FHC dress to mass every Sunday, neither do you wear your wedding dress. And NOBODY wears their bridesmaids dresses after the wedding..
What i don’t understand is that for a first communion and wedding women will wear a veil when they receieve the Lord? Well why only those two days? Every time you go to mass your particapting in a wedding feast and you in Jesus’s physically presence. Shouldn’t you wear a veil for him just as you would wear a veil in front of the Pope? I just don’t understand some people’s thought processes.
This is not an either or situation. One could wear a head covering with a tank top..
I honestly believe that those who say the would be distracted by a covering would be distracted by anything. I would rather see a church with covered women who dress modestly then see the jeans, tank tops, short skirts, and the “look at me i am barely wearing any clothing” looks that we see right now.
While reading this thread I keep getting images of one character from “Keeping Up Appearances” - Rose in her religious mood: black veil & ultra mini skirt.Weddings and First Holy Communion are Costumes. Who knows who is holier than another? It's not a contest about who gets to sit next to Jesus in heaven. Is someone who prays the rosary before Mass holier than someone who doesn't? Is someone who goes to daily Mass and Holy Communion holier than someone who goes to only Sunday Mass. Who knows, but God. People can drive themselves crazy thinking someone may be holier than them by how they dress or act. We are all called to be Holy as our heavenly Father is Holy. We all need to do the Will of God. People who go to frequent Confession and daily Eucharist are probably generally holier than those who don't. It makes me happy to see people behaving in a holy way. Do they know they are holy? Do they know they are in the state of Sanctifying Grace? I hope so, or they need to go to Confession. We are all sinners, so how holy a person is can change at any time. We can't read their hearts, only God can. Can a person who wears a chapel veil be holier than one who doesn't. It could be. But, only God knows their hearts. We are all sinners at times even those who wear a veil. That's what frequent Confession is for. I want the grace from God to be as Holy as I can be. Bit to “flashy/ beady” for me.headcoverings-by-devorah.com/WhiteFancyAppliqueBeadKippah3.jpg
This looks quite pretty and does not stand out when at an ordinary form or Mass. You can keep these in the car easily.

What I see here is that women want to be pious, and are called by God to wear a chapel veil, genuflect before receiving, and then saying they are getting condemning stares and accusations of distracting others.Who knows who is holier than another? My fellow parishoners and Pastor have been very supportive as I have stated in my other posts. I don’t wear it to witness to anyone. I wear it for God alone and only God can read our hearts. I wish you the peace of Christ. What I see here is that women want to be pious, and are called by God to wear a chapel veil, genuflect before receiving, and then saying they are getting condemning stares and accusations of distracting others.
Do you people honestly think chapel veils are relevent? Daily mass, monthly confessions, Eucharist Adoration mean more to God than what you have on your head. BTW, I haven’t seen mentioned what color chapel veil is appropriate for which occasion. Is it ok to wear black on Sundays, or must they be white? Pink Kleenex’s were definately faux pas.
Signed by some one who has been there, done that, and am sorry it’s such a big issue to make a statement about themselves at mass. And honestly, you are making spectacles of yourselves. My 85 year old mother, French, had some of the most beautiful mantilla’s. She does not wear them now. She does not want to draw attention to herself.
So if you really think that wearing a covering on your head is pleasing to God, do it in public as well, so that you are at least witnessing to secular society, instead of only at mass, where you can feel morally superior to those who don’t wear them.

i am sorry you have such hatred and angry towards coverings. Due to your pink tissue comments it sounds like you grew up in the era of “we do certain things but have no idea why”. Your generation (right around Vatican II I assume) threw the baby out with the bathwater with reforms. My generation is trying to learn about the church and who she was and is now. We are like children and are going to try things and see how they fit into our lives and our faith journey. What worked or didn’t work for you may or may not work for us. Don’t rush to judgment and just assume that your correct in your assessment of other people’s faith journeys. What I see here is that women want to be pious, and are called by God to wear a chapel veil, genuflect before receiving, and then saying they are getting condemning stares and accusations of distracting others.

I didn’t have any part of it, SOME priests and bishops ran off with it. I know exactly why we do things. I have always loved the mass, whether in Latin or in English.

My point is it’s just a head scarf, I don’t know why you attach so much meaning to it. I happen to remember the days when they were worn, and they made no statement whatsoever. To pick a head covering as a witness to Christ sounds absurd to me. And kleenex’s are valid head coverings. My generation is trying to learn about the church and who she was and is now. If you delve into what a lot of people did in those days, it was for looks. It wasn’t the Church, it was the generation, pilbox hats, Dior suits.

She doesn’t want to wear them, because she does not believe in drawing attention to herself. She also feels it is just a piece of cloth.I do it in Church when I am in the physical presence of the Lord because I am showing honor, respect and submittance to my Savior. If your mother has coverings and she wants to wear them then you support her. It’s not as bad as people make it out to seem.
There is not comparison between a chapel veil and what the American flag represents. What if…
I were the mother of a young man, just killed in Iraq.
And I see someone burning a flag. An American flag. And I get upset.
Would you ask me the same question? Would you ask me if the American Flag is relevent to show support for your country?
Some people view the veil is just a piece of cloth…well…so is an American Flag… how do you view the American Flag?
I never said anything about nun’s habits being costumes, I said First Holy Communion dresses and wedding dresses are costumes to be worn for the day only. Do you wear you wedding dress to mass every Sunday? Having said that, I do wish nuns would go back to wearing the habit, but most of the nuns I knew were happy to get out of it. It was hot and confiningI think you missed my point of the symbolism. We make a big deal about the veils for those special days so why not every mass? I mean every mass is a wedding feast and you should dress appropriately. What about Nuns and Priest should we ask them to stop wearing their collars and habits? I’ve heard of Nuns who love their habits because they get to wear their wedding dress every day. Are they considered costumes then or do you think there could just possible be some
I do not see any correlation between wearing a piece of cloth on your head submitting to God. You must dress respectfully and behave respectfully in His presence. It is just one step or one gesture in a long process of steps of letting go of ourselves and submitting to God and accepting his love, mercy and all the graces that he has given us in our lives.
