How many women here wear a headcovering to Novus Ordo Mass?

There are enough road blocks or stones to stumble over on the journey that when we come to mass we should feel support, love and understand from our fellow Catholics instead of hate, distain and angry.
Agreed, and making an issue of veil wearing is one of them.
 do you really think this way? 😦

I came to wearing a headcovering only recently because I was afraid of people with attitude like the one you have expressed.
When I first came here, I thought the whole thing was funny, but you are serioius about wearing these things to make you holy. I think head coverings would be appropriate in a Tridentine setting, but not a NO. For me wearing a veil to a NO mass seems incongruous.

I am not angry, at first I thought it was funny, brought back funny memories of my childhood, but if it means that much to you, wear it. I personally would feel out of place at my daily mass and monthly Adoration. If I suddenly came in wearing one, I would feel, and the old ladies that go would be like “Why are you wearing that old relic?!”

We should try to be ONE at mass. I can’t stand it when the nun (who can tell?, she wears crops and sneakers) behind me at daily mass substitues the word “God” for “He” every chance she gets. In the quietness of the early morning mass, it’s really obvious. We aren’t supposed to genuflect before receiving, but some (young 20 somethings do it). I don’t know why, we are supposed to be obediant. We should pray and worship together as a unity.
Bit to “flashy/ beady” for me.
If I am going to wear a skull cap as a head covering I would prefer something like this I thinkhttp://headcoverings-by-devorah.com/BlackCottonCrochetSimpleKippah3.jpg

We are One at Mass. The reality is there in the Eucharist. We are One in Christ even if one person stands and one kneels, or one wears a veil and one doesn’t.

I ordered this one called Adah 3 for NO and wear my regular black chapel veil for the traditional latin Mass. The folks in my parish don’t seem to mind those of us who wear headcoverings.
These are new this year. I am looking to see which of these I want.😃

What I see here is that women want to be pious, and are called by God to wear a chapel veil, genuflect before receiving, and then saying they are getting condemning stares and accusations of distracting others.

Do you people honestly think chapel veils are relevent? Daily mass, monthly confessions, Eucharist Adoration mean more to God than what you have on your head. BTW, I haven’t seen mentioned what color chapel veil is appropriate for which occasion. Is it ok to wear black on Sundays, or must they be white? Pink Kleenex’s were definately faux pas.

Signed by some one who has been there, done that, and am sorry it’s such a big issue to make a statement about themselves at mass. And honestly, you are making spectacles of yourselves. My 85 year old mother, French, had some of the most beautiful mantilla’s. She does not wear them now. She does not want to draw attention to herself.

So if you really think that wearing a covering on your head is pleasing to God, do it in public as well, so that you are at least witnessing to secular society, instead of only at mass, where you can feel morally superior to those who don’t wear them.
I wear a covering all the time. And no I don’t feel morally superior to anyone. I do feel saddened that you are judging my motive for a personal decision that harms no one.

My wife wears one, but only as of recently. We had been a little put off by the general lack of respect for the Lord in our Church. People generally don’t bother dressing nicely, come in late, don’t genuflect, etc, etc. We don’t think we are superior to anyone, but are just trying to set an example of respect. We don’t think we are better than anyone else, but held some hope that others would follow and do the same after one of us broke the barrier, so to speak. So far, no one else has.

One week my wife forgot to wear hers and one of the religious brothers pulled her aside and told her he was glad she didn’t wear that on her head because that was the way they did things in the “old days” and her hair is too pretty for that. I was shocked that he would have the nerve to tell her how she should pay her respects to the Lord. Others we have talked to said we shouldn’t be offended because brother is a very nice person, and if we really knew him we wouldn’t be offended, but still…

I wear one! I have two actually, and I wouldn’t mind a few more.
Monkrock.com has some lovely cheaper ones.

Why do people constantly comment that those of us who veil are doing so to feel morally/spiritually superior?

That is the best price I have seen. I would like to try their coffee too. Thanks 🙂

Wow, I am having a hard time understanding why some people on this thread have such negative ideas towards those who choose to cover their heads at prayer and at Mass.

It took me several years of weighing and praying about the call to cover before I finally (timidly) purchased and wore a mantilla to church. I assure those of you who may think otherwise that my motivation had absolutely nothing to do with a feeling of “holier than thou” or looking down on women who did not feel the same need to do this. In fact I was very, very concerned about the question of “drawing attention to myself”, so much so that I feel I actually ended up refusing to be obediant to what I felt I was clearly asked to do.

I don’t feel prideful or haughty when wearing a mantilla to Mass, on the contrary, it took a lot of prayer to be able to submerge my vanity regarding “looking strange” before I could get myself to do it.

I grew up during the transition from the old ways to Vatican II and my recent decision to return to veiling was conflicted by how stupid and “ugly” I felt as a young girl being forced to wear covering to church.

I am aware that there are some in my parish who look at me a bit strangely when I show up with my head covering at Mass, and maybe others who think I am trying to reproach them for not doing the same…but…my strong conviction that this is an important thing for me to do is not swayed by those concerns any longer.

My decision is personal, and one of obediance and humility. If others take note of my very PERSONAL decision, I would hope that the majority of those that do take personal courage that they would not be the only women choosing what to me, now that I fully understand and accept this calling, is a beautiful privilege they can partake of with less trepidation if only because at least one other woman in their parish chose to brave whatever negative feedback may be dished out.

I wish that more women in my parish felt free to cover their heads if they so wished. The attached picture is not of my parish group, and is a much more traditional parish than mine, but when I look at it I get no sense that these women are covering their heads in order to demonstrate any kind of pride or haughtiness over others. On the contrary.

I too have been struggling with whether or not to wear a head covering at NO mass. I did at one point, but that was because I knew my pink hair was more of a distraction than the covering itself (don’t worry, it’s now back to it’s natural brown). The parish I attend, out of the 200 or so people that attend, there is one 80-something year old lady that wears one everytime I’ve seen her step foot into church, and usually I’ve seen her get out of her car with it on.

I am worried about drawing too much attention to myself (what a complete 180 from when I was younger)… it seems to me that no one bats an eye at my generation wearing tube tops and spaghetti straps, but I have the nagging feeling that there would be, at the very least, a few looks. I only pray that God directs me to do his will and if this is his will, to, as I’ve heard before “get over myself”.

God Bless!

If you feel called by God to wear a headcovering during Mass, then do it.

I go to a parish with Mass in the OF/NO. We have over 1,000 families. It is a very large parish. I believe I am the only one that covers my head, and it was very scary at first. I don’t know if that is the case now, but it was then. I even - last minute - was going to back out, but a friend of mine was with me and knew that I - from that point on - had made a resolution that I was going to wear it. They told me to put it on and reminded me of everything I had told them. And ya know… it was ok. I think I kept my eyes closed the entire Mass to focus and to not encourage any thoughts about people looking at me. I survived though, and I was very happy I had done what I felt God had been telling me to do for some time. With time it becomes easier and easier to wear it. It doesn’t matter if it is the EF or the OF, it is the Mass. If God is calling us to wear it, then we should.

And, in my experience, no one has ever said anything to me.

Maybe something smaller, like the Lady’s Chapel Cap or a Scalloped Veil would be appropriate?

Why not just a nice hat or scarf if a veil makes one uncomfortable?? Nobody says it has to be a mantilla. And I don’t think it’s anybody’s business if someone wants to cover their head (or not). It certainly is less distracting than some of the cleavage I’ve seen in church. Now THAT should be covered.

Probably because of the way SOME veil-wearers act while wearing a veil. Possibly also because how SOME act when they are not wearing veils.

It is absolutely amazing to me how angry people get about this subject. I wore a head covering to my 5 p.m. NO mass this evening…it was my first time. I have been a convert for two years, but a strong (Protestant mostly) believer for 25 years before that, mixed in with experiments as an amateur “meditator”, New Age seeker, blahblah along the way. Been there, done that, or a lot of it anyway. I am 61 years old. I love being Catholic. It’s not a new, fun toy for me. It is my final destination and it took me longer than I would have liked to get here. I studied Catholic saints and “stuff” about Catholicism for years, always feeling somewhere inside me a pull, a tug on my heart leading me closer and closer to “coming home”. Now I’m here and seeing how bent out of shape women can get about other women wearing or not wearing something on their head. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt me to see this…I spent 12 years sitting in AA meetings and getting a real good look at human nature and human ego and human pride, especially my own!! “Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in e-ve-ry way.” That was me, and I’m not sure how much I’ve improved…if any it’s only by the grace of God. My hair started going gray in my 20’s, I dyed it my natural color of brown for years, then one day decided I might as well go for that cool blonde look. I like to look nice, but hey, at 61 one doesn’t exactly turn heads…but I don’t want to look like a frump. If I could just lose that extra 15 pounds…my health would be so much better!! (Ahem) Anyway, I wore the darn head covering, not a mantilla, but a pashima…yes, the thing Nancy Pelosi seems to love wearing, although I don’t subscribe to her type of politics. I liked it. I didn’t think I looked stunning. I knew people would probably “notice” me. I wished they wouldn’t notice me. I felt self-conscious, but tried to remember that I wore it not for show, not to get anyone looking at me, not to distract anyone, not to be better than anyone because Lord knows I know I’m not…but out of a desire to connect with millions of Catholic women before me who did the same and to honor the Lord. He may not give a fig that I wore it, but I don’t think He would frown on it either. I don’t care if any other woman does or doesn’t… to each her own. I respect the free choice. Why do we have to watch what another woman is wearing so much? As long as her “bosoms” or rear isn’t hanging out in everyone’s face, let her alone. Veils or no veils, can’t we just all pay attention to what we’re supposed to be doing there? I did feel more privacy and more focus…but hey, that was just me.

AMEN Hard2Bhumble … you tell it like it is lady and keep it up!

I wanted to cover my head before I became Catholic … about two months after being confirmed, etc (which was just last year) I started covering my head. I don’t care what or where I go to Mass, my head is covered. It irks me to see women all dressed up for a Latin Mass with their head covered and be at our regular parish NO Mass the next week with blue jeans on and no head covering … they got to figure out the reason they are covering, not me, … I cover because of yes, tradition (with a little t) and love of the Lord in the blessed Sacrament.

Don’t you love being Catholic? My stepson, who is a cradle Catholic, has a name for us newcomers, but (senior moment!) I can’t remember it right now…anyway he thinks we’re all sort of weird and crazy because we’re so excited about it all. I don’t care. God let me muck around in all the garbage for years and years so I would really appreciate the good stuff when I finally found it, I guess. And hey, if our sisters want to wear jeans sans headgear one day, then veils and skirts the next, who knows how it will all turn out in the end? It sure took me long enough to figure out some of the simple, basic truths, like…duh, there is one group that’s been around since Jesus went to Heaven. I could’ve had a V-8!!

LOL… It took me four years to convert. I’ve been on these forums since 2005, just converted last year!

I love, love, love being Catholic!

I am 22 years old and I wear one :byzsoc:

I prayed and thought about it for over a year before I started. I felt compelled to wear one, a weight on my heart, and did a lot of reading and research…I’m pretty sure I’ve read almost everything on the internet about headcovering. My reasons are similar or identical to many other posters, so I won’t repeat them. I have been veiling since November and will never go back

I did get some opposition. I am a leader in my parish and almost everyone (my age, at least) knows who I am. There is no option for just “blending in”. My parish is not very traditionally-minded at all (though I frequent a local conservative parish as well as TLM whenever possible) and in our congregation of at least 1,000 I have never once seen a regular parishioner veiling…not that I check it out every Mass…just in general, what I’ve observed.

Needless to say…it was uncomfortable at first, but I knew in my heart I was doing the right thing (for me). I cannot see how veiling could possibly make one prideful, as an earlier post suggested. It has humbled me beyond what I could have ever imagined. EVERYONE has stared and some have probably judged me. My campus minister has chastised me…EMs have frowned at me (pretty sure one actually growled…but I also recieve on the tongue…so that might be why 😉). A good friend complained my mantilla was too “pretty”…after which I started wearing a simple cloth tied over my hair and at the nape of my neck (picture: italian peasent style).

Whenever I feel uncomfortable I just remind myself I’m doing this to show God how amazing He is, and how I am completely submissive to His will…whatever it may be.

It isn’t easy to stick out…but God calls us to be brave for Him. :knight2:

…oh and I forgot to mention…after the initial reaction lost its novelty, I now get lots of people (mostly women my age) asking me why I did it. Usually when I tell them they understand and comment that it is great and a beautiful way to be modest (if that makes sense…err?) I’m thinking more women my age will start doing it, once they understand it.

One usher at the more conservative parish I attend leaned over while collecting the offering from my pew to say that he was “overjoyed” to see a young woman covering her head at Mass again.

A current RCIA candidate said seeing me covering my head made him even more proud to be entering the Church. “It’s just makes me happy to see that!”
  • I don’t know what to make of this, but I am sooo happy he is about to enter the Church! yay!
** not meant to toot my own horn…more to encourage my fellow ladies who are on the fence about this due to fear.**
