I am just trying to see how much my fellow Catholics drink on a daily and weekly basis. Thanks and God Bless.

My DH and I rarely drink. We might have one drink every month or two at a cookout or holiday party. Otherwise, we rarely have alcohol.

In fact, I had a small bottle of wine on my countertop from November until March, when I finally decided to cook with it.

I will generally have a drink or two on a Sunday since we go out to the pub for lunch every Sunday. I don’t really drink during the week, unless we have a barbecue or it’s a birthday celebration or something like that but those things are rare. I don’t really se the point in drinking when I’m just sat at home.

Perhaps a beer once a night?🤷 It depends on what homework I have, but beer and programming often go together well.👍

Sober 12 years.
God be praised!!

…never had an ‘off’ switch…

am 33, and have 3 or 6 a night. It seems too much to me, not sure how I began doing this. It is not every night but 4 or 5 times a week. I am a father and a husband, and feel like I am setting a bad example.

A lot of this is cultural. Many Catholics in North America have traditionally been heavily influenced by our Purtian brothers and sisters… in traditional Catholic cultures (Italy, Spain, France, Latin America, etc) the vast majority of people will drink daily and always have… when I was in Rome, the nuns served us wine at every meal and it would have been considered exceedingly odd to abstain from it.

Its good that you have days off to give your liver a break. If its not every day you are not an alcoholic, but these habits can be difficult to give up.

I used to drink every day through my late teens and 20s. All those hangovers and grogginess,… I look back and think, I must have been mad to do it.

I now have a beer every other day, which works well for me. cheers

Sorry, I deleated my original post by accident. I do drink about 4-5 nights a week and have 3-7 beers. I know that seems like a lot, and to me it is not normal. I am a husband and a father, so that is me. I bet I am alone in the amount compared to most 33 year olds.

This statement is false. There are many alcoholics who drink only on weekends, or drink several days/nights a week but not every day.

The main characteristic of alcoholics would be an inability to control their drinking, even when they want to very much, and whether their drinking is causing disruption to any aspect of their lives - their work, their family life, their personal/spiritual life, legal problems, etc.

If you find yourself turning to alcohol to deal with problems in your life, you may be an alcoholic. You may not be, but that response is very common to alcoholics and other addicts.

AA has a lot of experience on this subject.

If you are concerned about your own drinking, a survey of others isn’t going to do you a bit of good.

🤷

Did the OP SAY they were concerned about their own drinking?
Most other people who don’t have a problem with alcohol don’t worry about how much anyone else drinks. Could be a relative or friend of an alcoholic, too.

I was just wondering what most parents or everyday people do. I know some that don’t drink at all, and some that drink quite a bit too often and too much. I guess normal to one, may not be normal to another.

Or one can just be curious. The question has come up in conversations with friends, didn’t seem out of the ordinary to me at the time.

Normal drinking means you can stop after 1 or 2. The people you know who drink quite a bit too often and too much may well be alcoholics. If their drinking bothers you, try Al-Anon. You can’t stop them from drinking but you can take care of yourself. Alcoholics can cause a lot of destruction in their lives which affects many other people. Al-Anon can help the friends and families of alcoholics.

Drinking every day and hangovers do not necessarily go together. As a PP stated, in many cultures - traditionally Catholic cultures - people drink every day, but it is associated with a meal, not just drinking to drink. So if someone says they have a glass or wine or 2 or a beer with dinner, that is far different from popping a cold one as soon as you get home from work.

I usually don’t drink at all, only for special occasions or select weekends. But, when I do drink, it’s usually 1-2 glasses of wine (not a fan of beer).
