How old were you when you got married?

My wife and I married in June of last year. I was 21 and she was 19.

Tony Bennett made me do it.

“Let it slip off the tip of your tongue.
I love you
You love me
People do
Why don’t we
Marry young.”

I thank God that we married so young. It could have been a disaster for us otherwise. I insist that it is evident by our physical makeup that God did not create us with the intent that we should wait even into our mid-twenties or thirties to reproduce and, since the only acceptable environment for reproduction, by His own standards is marriage, we were not created to wait that long to marry.

We matured a lot together instantly. At the beginning of our marriage the Holy Spirit really started pulling at my heart about birth control. I said, “God, if it really is you pulling at my heart, have my wife bring it up to me.” The next day she said to me, “Zach, I don’t think we should be using birth control.”

From there my whole world was flipped upside down. I came across a book at Barnes & Noble published by Moody Classics (IRONY!) on writings from the Apostolic Fathers. It startled me and began to push me toward the Catholic Church. Fast-forward a bit and we are both in RCIA waiting for the Easter vigil.

I look at it this way ; when ‘people’ are old enough to move intogether / shack up/ even sleep together in a ‘relationship’ then they are old enough to be married.

I was 18, he was 22, we’ve been married for 9 years and counting. 👍

We were both 18, our first baby was due on our first anniversary. Our marriage ended when he died at age 28, 10 days after our 10th anniversary.
It was a lot of hard work, I don’t think we got married for the right reasons and it was bumpy. My children have gotten married later, starting at about 24 and that was fine with me!

How sad. I know you probably tried to have that come across with some degree of levity, but it really is just sad. I agree with the person that commented too. When your child reaches the age of 18, you can have opinions, but there is nothing you can do to prevent them from doing what they want to do. It also like so many people that “assume” a child is going to go to college/university. Why? It is a fine ambition, indeed, but not one that is appropriate for everyone. Each person is unique and must follow their own heart in what they do in life, not their parent’s ideals who may be living vicariously through them.

Anyway, off of my rant. I was married at 22, fresh out of college and my husband was 21 and in the Army (he had left college when his father died, he later finished his degree).

I have a daughter who is in love, and if all continues going well, she will marry at 18 and the young man will be 20. He is planning on college/university, she is not, nor are we planning to push that on her. She will take dual enrollment college courses while still completing her high school courses, so she may very well have an associates degree at the age of 18 anyway, just by way of those courses she will be taking. We see no reason to make them wait to marry, just because society deems them “too young”.
Nice . You don’t own your children. When they become adults they get to make their own decisions. I married at 18 and absolutely no regrets. My parents were opposed but in the end they knew it was my choice to make. We will be celebrating our 19th anniversary in two weeks and are more in love now than the day we were married. I admit 18 is young. 22 is a perfectly reasonable age to get married.
22, and I would knock my daughters unconscious with a baseball bat and lock them in the basement (if I had one) if they even HINTED at marrying that young.

I went for the OLDER woman - 3 months older. We married a week past my 20th birthday, 45 1/2 years ago.

She was my best friend for 13 years prior to our wedding. Our daughters and grandkids love to see our 2nd grade report cards - she got better grades and I liked that. First Communion, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony together. Neat.

I am grateful for God’s Blessings.

I was 17 and my husband was 21. Non of our 6 Children ever married untill after age 25.
We will celebrate our 55th anniversary on February 25th.

:clapping:

What a wonderful love you two have shared! Your story is heartwarming! Thanks for sharing it.

As for me and my beloved, hubby and I were much older than most posters here when we married at 31 and 32.

First time, at 17. Second time, at 33. First time, not such a good choice; second time, just about perfect!

I was 39, he was 43; my first marriage, his second; we celebrated our 12th annniversary last year. I could have married in my 20s, but I knew it would have been a BIG mistake, and the guy wasn’t who God had in mind for me. I’ve seen successful marriages and failed marriages in all age groups.

I was 21; my wife was 18. We’ve been married almost 48 years. And we are still in love.So young marriages do work.

What a beautiful story.

I was 23, hubby was 22. We had been dating for 4 years and I couldn’t feel more blessed.

It was 5 days after I turned 17 & DH was 19 on the wedding day. We celebrated our 51st anniversary in January! We have 3 kids & 8 gkids. My son was 20 & after 17yrs his wife left. The other son was 25 & married 22yrs & daughter was 24 & married 19 yrs. I was like someone else on here, I wanted them to wait awhile till they got married .

I was almost 23 and my wife had just celebrated her 20th birthday 2 months before our wedding . We will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary in about three months. And, we owe a great to Our Blessed mother who was so instrumental in bringing us together, For myself it was my 54 day Rosary Novena to Our Lady, and for my wife it was her prayers/petitions to Our Lady that she would meet the man with the characteristics she had asked for.

We eloped. Months later we married in the Catholic Church - I didn’t know that it was wrong not to marry solely by a justice-of-the-peace ceremony.

I was 30. We’ve been married almost 20 years now. Can’t speak for my husband, but things seem to just get better and better.

Keep having to learn to trust God - He really does know what He’s doing.

I really like how the data is shaping into a nice Gaussian curve. 😃

Unfortunately, when I marry (if?), I’m going to be outlier data. 😛
