Devil’s advocate: The Michael Vicks of the world, the dog fighter types who confuse vicious dog ownership as some bizarre, ersatz symbol of manhood, will simply breed another dog to take the pitbull’s place.

If they have tattoos, don’t move in next to them either. Those are the sorts of people who do not lend themselves to gentrifying the neighbourhood.
Tattoos have nothing to do with that.
Also don’t be neighbours with people who have fire pits. They tend to be the same sorts of dog lover- partier types.
Seriously? A fire pit? What a silly assumption.

This. The pit bull is to now what the Dobie was to the 1970s and the GSD to the 1960s.

Complete annihilation of a breed is not the answer, and it’s more than a bit barbaric.

Tethering is a bad practice that actually encourages aggression.
Honestly, most city lots are too small for a dog. Nevertheless, owner should provide an enclosed area for the dog.

Now, I have seen people walk their dog with no leash or the leash exceeds 6ft. That’s dangerous for anyone trying to get around them.

Dude! You’re crazier than the person who told me to crawl around like a dog in the yard and tell the dogs how their behavior made me feel! You can’t be serious! And I have a firepit! Everyone I know has a fire pit! Like, literally everyone on our street has a firepit! There is no correlation between firepits and obnoxious behavior. THere’s certainly no correlation between fire pits and owning aggressive dogs!

The fire pit comment was a bit over the top.

Most of the people I know have one as well.

Complete annihilation of a breed is also a slight bit outside my authority.

That wasn’t directed at you. That was directed at the people who say “KILL THEM ALL!!!”

Which is barbaric, because the week after that it’ll be another breed on the chopping block.

For every dog that attacks, there’s far more that don’t. Of any breed.

The problem with it is, how do you determine which dogs are and aren’t pitbulls? I highly doubt any of the dogs in my neighbor’s yard and certified AKC pitbills. (If pitbulls are even considered an AKC breed.) They’re pitbull mutts. Which dog features are going to be used to qualify pits and non pits? How many does the dog have to have to be considered a pitbull?

Well, what’s more is that dogs can be bred to be sweeties as well as nightmares. Dobies and rotties have gotten more docile these days. Meanwhile, St. Bernards went on a mean phase after the Beethoven movie led to indiscriminate over-breeding. And do you remember the old 40s movies, when bulldogs were the dreaded Cujo? That’s laughable these days.

[Deleting the account of my own life drama - don’t want to threadjack!]

If there’s no breed-specific legislation in your area, it’s irrelevant. The fact is that they’re aggressive and getting into your yard is enough to incriminate your neighbor.

Sorry to beat a dead horse on this, but please call animal control.

Was attacked by across-the-street neighbor’s pit bull. It came up my driveway at me. Was able to grab a garbage can to fend it off so it couldn’t bite me. After a while the neighbor laughed and called it home.

We ended up moving.

[The neighbor is a cop.]

[He breeds pit bulls.]

[His other neighbors moved away.]

[Lots of stories about territorial dogs attacking visitors around or near their owners’ homes … major lawsuits.]

People have asked me if my Malinois is a pit bull. 😆😆 He’s a Belgian working dog, not even remotely related to any sort of terrier. Looks more like a GSD than a pit.

It’s not features. It’s the genetics. And most people can’t even ID an actual pit bull. The dogs I’ve heard people ID as pits usually don’t even resemble a pit bull. It’s pretty sad.

In the end it’s irrelevant if they’re scaling your fence. If my neighbor’s chihuahua scaled my fence I’d be fuming.

What?! I’m sure glad I’m not neighbors with any of you people. The neighbor hasn’t even been spoken to!? The iPhone instant gratification/results generation right here.

I spoke to the neighbor. I already said that I did. I told him I was concerned for my children’s safety when they’re in the yard. He didn’t have an immediate answer for me, since he was busy trying to get his dog out of my yard.

Alright I didn’t see further replies. I really don’t know. Pray about it.

You seem pretty adament that I need to speak more to the neighbor, but you have no better idea than I do as to what I should say. I already told them I don’t want their dog in my yard and that I consider the fact that the dog got in a safety issue for my children. What more do you think I should be saying?

Do you think I should demand that they exchange the dogs for poodles?
Do you think I should threaten to shoot the dogs?
Do you think I should ask nicely for them to be tethered?

We’ve been having dog issues for a few years. Nothing like your dangerous situation. Mostly it is the barking all day long… They are at work and the dog stops barking when they come home. If they went out at night more barking. You talk to the neighbors about it and they look at you and shrug. I never understood why have a dog if your not home all day and the dog is not allowed in the house when you are home.

Well they moved and now the new neighbors dog is aggressive and within days I noticed a couple of fence rails knocked loose and sure enough my wife told me the dog was in our yard. So I’m just gonna give it a little time and I will hammer the fence nails myself but if it keeps happening I guess it will be an issue.
