Yes. I had a similar situation. Not being very big or able fight off a dog attack I bought a gun. Yes, that Pit Bull tried to jump the fence and get me several times. The local gun shop knew why I bought that gun and the guy who owned the dog. They knew I would use that pistol and why. I was a prisoner/hostage in my own home. Unfortunately owning a gun opens up a whole new can of worms. And you just canā€™t have guns around children 'cause sooner or later they will find them.

Just realised most of her photos are when she is out of coat and looking bare.

Very true. A gun can be risky. In 1991, I used a can of Mace to stop a dog attack once. It worked quite well. The dog stopped biting a neighbor of mine he was attacking about five seconds after the first spray. Then, he turned as if to attack me. I gave him a second and third spray directly up the nose, eyes and mouth and he ran away yelping. I heard the dog gasping for breath before his owner took him away in a car. Then, EMTā€™s came to tend to the horrible bites on my neighborā€™s legs, arms and face. Blood was everywhere. The owner later had his dog destroyed. I heard he settled out of court at a very large sum. Within a year, he sold his home and he moved. My neighbor was scarred for life.

No one knows what breed my laek is. They call her a German Shepherd, an Irish wolfhound, a pig dogā€¦greyhoundā€¦etc.

But here most people donā€™t know what a mal is. Australia has its first couple of police dog litters being trained up.

The military RAAF keep them, but they donā€™t come into the public arena.

Laeks were almost wiped out in WW2. They were used as messenger dogs between staging grounds etc.
America has some fine Laeks,!

Hectorā€™s been called a pit bull (seriously?), a Shepherd, a ā€œpolice dogā€ (the closest, in my humble opinion), a wolfhound (again - what?)ā€¦

Or people ask ā€œWhat kind of dog do you have?ā€

ā€œA Malinois.ā€

ā€œOh how niceā€ (and you know immediately they have no idea what youā€™re talking aboutā€¦).

I hear ya. We live that life!

I want to get Hector a tee shirt (he loves his sweaters - he cries in front of the washing machine when you have to wash them) that says ā€œCall me a Shepherdā€¦One more timeā€¦ā€

Another spelling of Lakenois. Iā€™ve seen it spelled Lakenois and Laekenois.

I suspect the latter is actually correct and the former is an Americanization. Thanks, AKC.

Laekenois

Pronounced lake en waa
Mal en waa

Ps there are some great American fb laek Pagesā€¦puppiesā€¦

I shall remove her pics now. I have to watermark em.

We checked. The dog went over the fence in this case. I suspect, based on her saying that, that they probably had the dog digging out in their previous residence.

Do you know the neighborsā€™ first and last names and where they moved from? You could look into complaints about the dogs at their previous residence. They probably moved for a job or family but it came with the bonus of leaving dog drama behind. Check Facebook; Iā€™m amazed at the dirty laundry people post and there might be posts complaining about complaints about their dogs. If you find anything it might give you some history to work with.

I would not let your children play in the yard until this is resolved as people have suggested. If things donā€™t improve fast, I think you should put your house up for sale. These kind of problems lead to long court battles, many calls to the cops, a ton of stress which will affect your marriage. And thatā€™s the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is unthinkable.

I would not shoot at the dog because if he was close to your children and posed a threat, you could accidentally shoot your children.

Generally speaking,do your neighbors come off as reasonable or unreasonable people?
Depending on this, may determine the approach you will need to deal with this matter.

Some people are very unreasonable with their vicious dogs. There are vicious killer dogs here that are barking all the time and they are ready to spring into action and bite and kill anyone nearby. Calling the police did no good, since the police are friendly with the dog owners and they tell me that these dogs are only harmless pups. Perhaps the police might change their minds after a few small children have been viciously bitten and killed by these dogs.
